Analysis of Student Feedback (2014-15)

The views and opinions of the students have been recorded through structured feedback form. The format provided by NAAC has been supplemented by our own with a questionnaire. The information was collected from 200 students mainly belonging to 3rd year Honours. The findings are categorised into following heads.

1. Curricular Aspects: The course curricular of the College is based on the affiliating University, Kalyani University, so as such the college does not have autonomy in this regard. The students of some department had complaints regarding the practical relevance of the subjects taught. They demanded a more practical based approach. The medium of instruction of all science subjects being English proved a challenge to them as most of them fared from a rural background without adequate grip over the language. Moreover, huge availability of books in English language mode in the library and its inadequate translations in Bengali, were also a major source of complaint among students. However, the students were satisfied with the practical classes included in the honours syllabus. On the other hand, respondents of the departments like Bengali, History , Philosophy opined their satisfaction as related to the syllabus. 2. Teaching Learning and Evaluation: We came to know from the feedback that the students were satisfied with the quality of the lessons being taught in general. They were more or less satisfied with the evaluative process, but some students felt the need of revival of the internal assessment tests, which earlier used to be a part of the curricula. There were varied opinions regarding the syllabus coverage by respondents of various departments. However, students have no complaint regarding the timelines of practical work in spite of shortage of permanent faculty members. 3. Infrastructural facilities: Areas like Laboratory, library, computer, canteen facilities were covered in the feedback form. Science laboratories according to them were more or less well equipped,

AQAR 2014-2015 of Nabadwip Vidyasagar College Page 11

however some students felt the need of technical support staff in laboratory. The need of more class rooms were also felt by the students. Science departments had their own computers but humanities students felt the need of more access to computers. The recent increase in number of books in the library went well with the students, though they demanded more copies of some regular course books. Some also demanded more space for the reading room of the library. The hostel and canteen facilities were found inadequate. 4. Student support and recreational facilities: Absence of a regular playground, medical help facilities and a gymnasium were felt by the students. However, students were quite satisfied with the indoor game facilities and the common room provided to them. They were of high praise regarding the NSS and NCC works conducted by the college and actively participated in both.

Feedback of Alumni 2014-2015

As being affiliated to the University of Kalyani, we do not have adequate space to modulate the curricular aspects. Its activities remain limited to occasional meetings and they are more of a get together than a forum for serious deliberations. However, some ex-students whose wards are enrolled as present students of the college, pay occasional visits to the college and interact with the principal and teachers of the departments concerned and sometimes they forward some valuable thoughts regarding the developments of the respective Departments. These interaction are of informal nature and no collective and authenticated opinion can be derived from them.

Feedback from Parents 2014-2015

Our College is affiliated to the University of Kalyani. Sometimes to cope with the syllabus our Departmental Heads asked the parents to meet them at the Departments to serve the purpose of academic developments. To maintain in this connection , the bulk of the student community belong to the villages surrounding Nabadwip and the parents are mostly working in various trades or profession. They have not much orientation about the curricula their wards have to learn. Besides, the college having no academic autonomy does not enjoy the liberty of framing an independent curriculum. The teachers as members of Board of Study, put up suggestions for necessary modifications. Hence the parents play no significant role in curricular aspect.

Feedback from Employers 2014-2015

Employers of the College mean Governing Body which consists of twelve members, four of which are teacher representatives, one student representative and Principal as Secretary of the Governing Body. These members are mainly supposed to be aware of the curricular aspects. Two University Nominee, one DPI nominee and the President himself sometimes have first hand knowledge curricular aspects if have credentials as academic. The teacher members of Governing Body and the Student representative put forward their opinion and suggestions which is granted through the members of the Board of Studies amongst the faculty, if any, and then the matter is taken up for discussion and deliberation as well as decision in the meeting of the Board of Studies

ANNEXURE-III

Strengths:

 The arrival of a large number of young new entrants in the academic cadre has provided a royal boost to the teaching-learning scenario.

 The burden of collection of fees and other financial transactions shouldered by the local SBI branch has lessened the work load of office to a great extent, resulting in minimizing the negative effect of the emaciated staff strength.  Extensive use of resources and a well-stocked computerized library and reading room facilities provide the students opportunity for academic and other pursuits within and beyond curriculum.

Weaknesses:

 Not enough students seeking admission in Commerce and the Science (general) stream.  No introduction of new multi-disciplinary courses.  Very little say in the designing of syllabi and curricula in the University.

Opportunities:

 With the introduction of the PG course in Sanskrit, a new and broad pathway has been created in the realm of oriental studies.  Value education programs like the NSS and NCC activities in rural areas and amongst slum dwellers create in the minds of the students a deep sense of social responsibilities and fellow feeling and exhort them to act selflessly for the betterment of the society as a whole.  Faculty members are provided ample opportunity to carry on research work, pursue their Ph.D. programme , participate in OP and Refresher courses and present their intellectual harvest in the national and international journals.

AQAR 2014-2015 of Nabadwip Vidyasagar College Page 31

Challenges:

 The infrastructural upgrading cannot keep pace with the increase in intake as instructed by the concerned affiliating university and as a resultant factor there is hardship to the student community and the institution as a whole.  The teaching and non-teaching posts lying vacant for a prolonged period, the college has to appoint guest lectures and casual non-teaching staff from its own resources. It is a taxation on the college fund which could have been utilized for developmental purpose.
