SOUTH MALDA COLLEGE: A BRIEF INTRODUCTION South Malda College, affiliated to Gour Banga University, started its journey in the year 1995 in a remote village with the aim to enlighten the society with rays of education. Since its establishment, the college has continuously served its society by giving excellent academic knowledge to the students.

Infrastructure and Facilities 1. Campus and Buildings The college campus with its 3 three-storied buildings, spacious classrooms, verdant field, manicured garden offers a magnificent ambience which is ideal and conducive for a quality learning experience. All the classrooms are well ventilated and electrified for the comfort of students. The campus is green and plastic free. The huge playground and attached garden adds the beauty of the college. 2. Central Library The college library is a well – equipped one with approximately 15,000+ books. Though the numbers of books are still inadequate, the college is trying its level best to increase the number on a regular basis. Regular book lending is done. We offer dailies, periodicals, journals, employment news in an academically conducive environment. The students can access e-books and e-journals through computers available in the library. The library is the academic hub of the institute. There is a provision for separate reading rooms for Staff and the Students. 3. Smart Classroom The college has 1large smart classroom at present which are well equipped with projectors and all other modern ICT tools to enable teachers for maximum use of technology to ensure effective teaching learning process. One more ICT room is under construction. 4. Laboratories The Department of Geography has a modern laboratory which is spacious, furnished with all necessary equipment, solutions and instruments as the natures of the subjects demand. 5. Boys’ Common Room The Boys’ Common Room, located in the ground floor of the building is a huge room where boys can spend quality time among their peers during off-periods and play table tennis and carrom. 6. Girls’ Common Room The Girls' common Room is spacious with all the facilities. It also has one Lady Attendant for security purposes. 7. Computer Laboratory There is one spacious Computer Laboratories in the college on the second floor of the newly constructed building. There are 15 branded computers with necessary configurations and internet connections.

ADMISSION: Admission to B.A / B.COM / B.SC. First year Honours and General course is strictly on the basis of merit. Students are provisionally admitted then the Gour Banga University finally accepts and issues registration certificates in favour of the candidate. NORMS & PROCEDURE OF ADMISSION : B.A / B. Com Honours & General courses are offered to the students who have passed the H.S Examination conducted by the WBCHSE or an examination recognized as equivalent by the University. The eligibility criteria as furnished by the to first year regular Honours course are: a) 45% marks in the aggregate or b) 40% marks in the aggregate and 50% marks in the subject. Merit marks calculation formula: [Subject (opted for Honours ) + Grand Total ( Best of Five subjects] 6 In case any candidate opted for an Honours beyond his/her subject combination at H.S. (10+20) level, and for the students of the West Bengal State Council for vocational education 7 training the merit lists for the Honours Courses will be prepared as: [0(zero) + Grand Total (best of Five)] 6

Final merit list of the applications for different Honours departments will be published on the COLLEGE WEBSITE and the listed candidates are asked to take admission by paying online within notified date. SCHOLARSHIP/ STIPENDS AND GRANTS:

1. Applications of the S.C/S.T/Minority students are forwarded to the S.C/S.T/Minority and Backward class welfare dept. Malda for stipend. 2. Half free and full free studentships are awarded by the college to the poor and meritorious students selected by the college authority. 3. The students of the college can avail of the facilities of the students Health Home. 4. Grants SC/ST/OBC (Non creamy layer) and minority on basis of annual family income and merit. 5. Government Scholarship from DPI Bikash Bhaban is allotted to deserving students. 6. Minority scholarship is granted to students who have a low annual income and on the basis of merit. 7. Kanyashree Scholarship is also provided by the West Bengal Government.

N. B.: Selection of students for conveyance allowance on the basis of attendance 75% attendance is essential for the students applying for scholarship.

Rules and regulation of the College

1. Attendance at theoretical classes must be on and above 75%, Students only having requisite percentage will be allowed to appear in the college and University Exam. Submission of Medical Certificate against the inadequate percentage of attendance will not be considered. 2. Students are liable to be expelled for misbehavior and / or for adopting unfair means in examinations. 3. Students must come to the college with their identity card, so that on demand they can show that to the college authority. 4. Students must clear their college dues before commencement of their Final exam. 5. No. students will be admitted to the Honours course unless he /she satisfies the University rules (for more information see admission). 6. Students’ migrating from another board or University must contact the college office to regularize his / her admission. 7. Change of combination in the first year degree course may be allowed as per regulation of Gour Banga University, on payment of requisite fee, provided seats are available. 8. The medium of instruction in English and in Bengali. 9. Classes are normally held on and from 10.00 a.m… and on Friday classes are suspended from 12.30 to 1.30 pm. 10. There shall be tests and exams, for both Hons. And Gen course following the CBCS pattern and as per university guidelines. 11. Students are required to look up at the college website and Notice- Board every day for all necessary information. 12. Students requiring certificates, documents etc. must submit their application at least seven working days before the date on which they want the same. 13. Without Library clearance students are not allowed to appear in the University Exam. 14. Use of Mobile Phone within the premises is restricted. 15. Students are expected to be disciplined in the college premises, that means. i) They are responsible for good conduct in the college. ii) They will not loiter or indulge in disorderly conduct in the college campus and library. iii) They should be respectful to the Teacher and staff and police and helpful to the guests of the college. iv) They must be regular in college and their respective classes. v) They must not leave or enter the class room without permission of the teacher. 16. Ragging of any sort will not be tolerated in the college campus. Such cases will be investigated by the college authority. If anyone found guilty will be punished.

STUDENTS’ UNION: The students Union nurtures healthy and vigorous organizational activities of the students. The Students’ Union organizes Cultural Function, games and Sports annually. College magazine, SARJANA is published each year by the Students Union.

N.C.C: The College has a great NCC Unit under 11 Bengal BN NCC, Malda lead by Prof. Paroma Chanda for disciplined life and are encouraged to join Military career. The total number of seats for NCC cadets is 60 which is likely to increase shortly. The NCC unit serves the society with various social activities. The cadets actively participate in the college programmes such as Annual Sports, Cultural Programmes, etc. The admission form will be available in the college office after taking admission in the college. Selection of the cadets is done through Physical Test and Viva-voce.

N.S.S: The integrated development work in rural areas is carried out by 3 NSS units. Unit- I Programme Officer Sushanta Pramanik Unit-II Programme officer Dr. Lutfur Rahman Unit- III Programme officer N.S.S Units are working in close collaboration with NGOs. Several programmers’ like World Environment Day, World Health Day, Independence Day, the Republic Day are observed and Medical Camp. Blood Donation Camp, AIDS Awareness Camp, Training Seminar etc. are conducted during regular activities and special camps. SPORTS AND GAMES To encourage the students for the sports and games, the college organizes the annual sports and some students are going for the State Level Athletic Meet. The college successfully organized the Inter District Non- Govts. Meet and Football Tournament and the college are the Running Champion of the Women’s Athletic Meet and Runners of Men Athletic Meet and Runner of Womens’ Badminton. FEE STRUCTURE:
