7 Announcement Members and Sponsors

In January we announced that we were going to be updating the Advanced Member Section this year – well, let’s bring you up to date..

Stills Section

The new Stills Section is completed and online. We’ve even started expanding the new Production Code Database, as we’re closing in on 60,000 production codes to help identify unknown movie stills and costumes.

All the articles have been moved and even the Production Code Basics book is there to help you. Artists Section

This is where our focus is right now because it is so huge. This is another impossible area where we’re basically trying to create an information gathering place.

We currently have a little over 1600 movie poster artists documented in the section. The new Poster Artists Identification Log is now online with all 1600 listed and over 800 signatures to help identify and direct to their country of birth.

8 We already had prepared a couple of hundred artist biographies with photos, lists of the titles and images of some of their artwork. We are in the process now of putting those online with over 100 already available online.

Once we finish the ones that were prepared, we will then begin going down each country with as much information on each artist as we have on file.

We also have several articles online about the procedures and steps to become a finished movie poster used in the theaters.

While LAMP already has more compiled information on movie poster artists than anywhere else, we hope this new format will help expand, gather and make a lot more artist information available to all of our members.

If you need info on an artist not online yet, email me.

LAMP SALUTES MOVIE POSTER ARTISTS

We have been called many things – some good, some not-so-good. I believe one of our favorites is “track-a-holics”. We track just about anything associated with movie posters, so as we expand each section, we plan to experiment with a few ideas that we’ve been tracking to see the response. Here is one:

Without sound or movement, a movie poster must attract the viewers’ attention, and somehow portray the whole spirit of the movie at a moment’s glance.

In addition, a great deal of the success or failure of the movie rests on its ability to entice the viewer to want to see the movie. With the beautiful artwork and the soul of the movie in one piece of paper, it’s no wonder why movie poster collecting is so popular. It’s like bottling your favorite memories of a movie and saving them for later on this simple poster.

The artists that carry this heavy burden have to be some of the best in the world.

How terrible would our collection be if each poster only had the title on it and NO ARTWORK!!.

We wanted to present a series to salute these mostly unheralded giants that a great deal of our collections are based upon – the artist.

This week we present biographies on two movie poster artists that happen to share a birthday this week.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
9 Movie Poster Artists Born This Week
We wanted to try out a new series just to see what everyone thought. If this is a topic of interest, email me ([email protected]) and let us know any comments, questions or suggestions.
We have two artists on file that were born this week:
Thomas Hart Benton
Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) was born on April 15, 1889 in Neosho, Missouri, the son of a Missouri congressman and the grandson of a U.S. senator. In 1907, Benton enrolled at the The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. Two years later, he moved to Paris in 1909 to continue his art education at the Académie Julian. After studying in Europe, Benton moved to New York City in 1912 and resumed painting. During World War I, he served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Norfolk, Virginia where he was directed to make drawings and illustrations of shipyard work and life.
Benton contributed to the American Scene Painting movement. He captured modern American life in the 1920s and 1930s through his carefully rendered land- and cityscapes.
In 1935, Benton turned his back on the eastern art establish-ment, moved permanently to Missouri, and continued to cultivate his grass roots style of art called Regionalism. He became an instructor of drawing and painting at the Kansas City Art Institute where his most famous pupil was the Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock.
Benton’s art can be found on movie posters including the original and 1947 re-release Style A for The Grapes of Wrath (left) and the 1955 film Kentuckian (right)
He died at the age of eighty-six while in his studio on his beloved Martha's Vineyard.
10 Alan LaVern Bean
Alan LaVern Bean (1932 - ) was born March 15, 1932, in Wheeler, Texas. Bean was an American naval officer and aviator, aeronautical engineer, test pilot, and NASA astronaut. Bean was the fourth person to walk on the moon. He was selected to become an astronaut by N ASA in 1963 as part of Astronaut Group 3. He made his first flight into space aboard Apollo 12, the second manned mission to land on the Moon, at the age of thirty-seven years in November 1969. He made his second and final flight into space on the Skylab 3 mission in 1973, the second manned mission to the Skylab space station.
After retiring from the United States Navy in 1975 and NASA in 1981, he pursued his interest in painting, depicting various space-related scenes and documenting his own experiences in space as well as that of his fellow Apollo program astronauts.
In 1989, Bean’s artwork appeared on the movie poster (right) for the Apollo-themed documentary For All Mankind.
When Bette Midler called, author Rebecca Wells was still stunned from the success of her novel Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. Midler’s All Girl Productions wanted to make the #1 New York Times Best-Seller into a movie starring Sandra Bullock, Ashley Judd, and a host of box office stars. The Louisiana native was soon too sick from undiagnosed Lyme disease to participate in the movie’s production or even attend the premiere. It took a few years before she even watched the film.
These days, still suffering from lingering light sensitivity and fatigue, the author returned to south Louisiana as the featured Great Southern Writer at the Books Along the Teche Literary Festival. She entertained the audience with personal anecdotes, readings from her novel, and a spirited Q&A session.
With the help of festival organizers, Movie Poster Archives had a surprise in store. Linda Thurman was invited to the stage where she presented Wells with original presskits in English and German. Wells was thrilled. Turning to the audience, she said, “I will now read to you in German,” eliciting laughter and applause.
Movie Poster Archives is a nonprofit that preserves movie paper of all kinds, such as posters, lobby cards, stills, and presskits. For more information, visit movieposterarchives.org or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/MoviePosterArchives.
36 What Price Hollywood
March 30, 2019 – June 15, 2019
The Museum of Modern Art
NEW YORK, March 4, 2019—The Museum of Modern Art announces What Price Hollywood, an exhibition exploring the gender roles and relationships displayed in studio-era movie posters, on view from April 8 through June 16, 2019. Taking inspiration from George Cukor’s 1932 film of the same name, the exhibition and an accompanying film series demonstrate how masculine and feminine stereotypes were employed in the marketing of classical-era films.
Featuring some 138 posters and lobby cards from collector Ira Resnick and the Museum’s own collection, dating from the silent cinema era through the 1970s, the exhibition highlights ways in which graphic and photographic representation on film posters shaped the moviegoing public’s understanding of romance and sex. What Price Hollywood is organized by Ron Magliozzi, Curator, and Brittany Shaw, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Film.
Beyond the nostalgia for cinema history that traditionally frames today’s consideration of classical Hollywood films, the exhibition also explores what critic Parker Tyler once described as its “monstrous and pernicious” influence on society and culture. Looking at the different ways gender roles and behavior are depicted in this body of work has rarely seemed more relevant. Ron Magliozzi explains, “The exhibition is motivated by a desire to look differently at a familiar form of motion picture ephemera in a way that ignites fresh interest in it and the performers whose work it represents, focusing attention of how this old-school entertainment medium still serves to shape cultural attitudes and social behavior today.”
37 The exhibition examines how the studios use body language to place male and female performers in characteristically defined couplings; how the differing gaze of some critical observers served to challenge intended meanings; and how certain allowed for subversive suggestions of female agency and queer perspectives to be imbedded in poster art. One section provides an analysis of the posters through the lenses of queer case studies, allowing alternative viewings of heterosexual pairings in classic Hollywood films.
The stars of silent cinema are also examined, with images of Mary Pickford and Rudolph Valentino exemplifying how suggestions of gender defiance served in the marketing of films as early as the silent period. Pickford’s on- screen persona as an indomitable heroine and off-screen reputation as a pioneering Hollywood businesswoman are convincingly reflected for her fans in the militant feminist pose seen in a poster for Johanna Enlists, while Valentino’s fashionably narcissistic appearance and sexually active image on screen in films such as Monsieur Beaucaire led to his becoming one of the country’s earliest and most public victims of queerbaiting.
What Price Hollywood also takes a closer look at the fetishized nature of American film genres like the Western and biker movies, with their catalogs of costumes, props, and activities that simultaneously bolster notions of manhood and exploit alternative erotic subtexts. Stars of these genres, like Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck, Marlon Brando, and James Dean, aided by enlightened directors like Nicholas Ray, exposed the explored the complexities of their gendered personas on screen and in promotional materials for films such as Along Came Jones, Cattle Queen of Montana, The Wild One, and Rebel Without a Cause.
The lack of representation on classic Hollywood film posters—a reflection of the significant absence of black performers in leading roles under the studio system—is also explored in the exhibition. Historically, African American entertainers began touring overseas in the late 1890s, in an effort to escape racism in the United States and expand their employment opportunities.
38 What Price Hollywood includes film posters for Papitou (Siren of the Tropics), starring Josephine Baker in her first film, and Bill Gunn’s Ganja & Hess, among the most remarkable works to come from a black filmmaker working outside the Hollywood system in the 1970s.
What Price Hollywood is the 35th film poster exhibition to be held in the Museum’s theater galleries since 1960.
SPONSORSHIP: The exhibition is supported by the Annual Film Fund. Leadership support for the Annual Film Fund is provided by the Kate W. Cassidy Foundation and Steven Tisch, with major contributions from Jo Carole and Ronald S. Lauder, Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP), Yuval Brisker Charitable Foundation, The Foundation, Inc., of , Marlene Hess and James D. Zirin, Karen and Gary Winnick, and The Junior Associates of The Museum of Modern Art.
Special thanks to Ira M. Resnick for lending works from his collection for this exhibition.
The coolest and best is undoubtedly the very very rare large two panel 3 sheet movie poster for Live A Little Love A Little.
Neal Adams is another giant name in the illustration field, mainly known for his legendary comic books for DC and Marvel but he also forayed into the movie poster Art form, creating in the process one of the most iconic deigns of the 1970's for the 1973 Sci-Fi Western, Westworld. Black and can be as equally striking especially such as this marvelous design created for John Lee Hooker's 1971 German concert. A true rarity and must have poster.
German design again with Holger Matthies, one of the giants of the field, having conceived over 1000 different images for movies, concert and also more recently Opera and stage events such as this magnificent image for a 1984 performance of Jacques Offenbach's The Tales Of Hoffmann.
Alfred Hitchcock is one of the Directors who is the most influential with the new designers with tens of new limited edition prints inspired bu his filmography such as Psycho just released by Mondo with Art by Phantom City Creative. We also have the variant version (will be in hand in May as they are not yet printed).
