CANDIDATE PROFILES The Maniapoto Māori Trust Board is holding its triennial election of Trustees in 2021. The election is for SIX (6) generally elected Trustee seats, and is being carried out by postal and internet voting using the First Past the Post (FPP) voting method. The profiles for the fourteen (14) candidates who have been nominated for the six (6) generally elected Trustee seats follow on pages 3-16. These are the people you will be given the opportunity to vote for in this election and their names are listed in alphabetical order of surname on the voting form. Voting closes at 12 noon on Friday 21 May 2021. For your information there are also nine (9) other trustee positions elected as follows: One (1) representative elected by Te Arikinui, one (1) representative elected by the Kaumātua Kaunihera o Maniapoto; and each of the seven (7) Regional Management Committees (RMC’s) can have one (1) elected representative. PROFILE Liane BEGMAN-GREEN has devoted more than 30 years to the field of Education inspiring many youthful minds throughout Early Childhood, Te Kohanga Reo, Mainstream Schools, Kura Kaupapa Maaori, Kura-ā-iwi and other community initiatives. Outside of education, there have been many decades of extensive experience and involvement with Policy and Governance serving in many capacities extending from School Board of Trustees, Staff Representative, Union Delegate to Marae Trustee and Executive for other numerous community organisations. A vast recollection of historical occurrences coupled with tribal awareness and whenua matters within Te Nehenehenui, provides an ability to confidently traverse the realm of the Māori Land Court, Waitangi Tribunal, High Court and many other judicial platforms for corrective redress.

He is a graduate of University and the Institute of Strategic Leadership. He has held a company directors certificate from the Institute of Directors since 2005. He has 15 years governance experience as a company director and trustee in education, fisheries, forestry, tertiary education and iwi organisations. Keith was previously the Deputy Chief Executive and Deputy Chief Executive of Waiariki Polytechnic for 8 years. He also led the engagement on the establishment of the Māori Land Service in 2016. Keith was Chief Executive of Māori Television from 2017 – 2020. Keith was elected to the Maniapoto Māori Trust Board in June 2015 and was elected Deputy Chairman In July 2018 and in May 2020 as Chairman. He supports his kaumātua on his home marae within the Mōkau rohe.

In June, I will submit my thesis to complete a Masters of Māori and Indigenous studies. My research covers leadership within Maniapoto and focuses on creating a Maniapoto specific framework for youth leadership development. I am standing for a generally elected trustee position because I am passionate about our people and our whenua. I was born and raised in Piopio on our tūpuna whenua and educated at Otago University and laterly in Seoul where I completed my MBA. My upbringing has instilled in me a sense of responsibility to hold fast and honor the legacy of our tūpuna as MMTB enters a new phase of its existance. Consolidation work post treaty settlement will allow us to establish a platform for stability and thus creating a base for the realisation of aspirations of Maniapoto. Priority areas remain for our people; employment, social welfare, affordable housing, cultural capacity in reo and tikanga and supporting our hapū and marae. Through couragous leadership, trusted partnerships and remaining true to our values we can move forward together. It will be a privilege to serve my iwi as a trustee.

Aloma is no different. I have known Aloma for over 20 years in her various management and governance roles within the Iwi. I have never heard any person complain about her performance/honesty. Bella has completed her second term as a generally elected member of Maniapoto Māori Trust Board. During the last six years she has held the roles of Chair of Audit and Risk, Chair of Te Kupenga o Maniapoto and during 2020 Interim Chief Executive. Bella has held executive finance roles in the Energy and Utilities industries in the UK and NZ, and recently transitioned into full time governance. She holds Directorships on Crown and Commercial entities including Te Kupenga o Maniapoto, Lines Company, Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, Te Ohu Kai Moana, Crown Infrastructure Partners, and ACC. Bella has a Masters in Management Studies with distinction (MMS) from Waikato University, is a Chartered Accountant with Chartered Accountants Australia and , member of the Association of Corporate Treasurers UK, and is a member of the Institute of Directors New Zealand. Bella was born in Te Kūiti and raised on her ancestral land in Māhoenui and attended secondary school in Piopio. She is married to Lui and has 3 children.

My name is Wikitōria Tāne. I am a current Maniapoto Māori Trust Board Trustee, appointed to the board in February 2020. I am the Maniapoto Iwi Appointee to the Waikato River Authority, and I work for Waikato-Tainui as a Taiao Advisor. My role is primarily to advocate for iwi, hapu, and whānau in Resource Management Act planning and consenting matters; ensuring protection and restoration. Prior to employment with Waikato-Tainui I worked for the Maniapoto Trust Board in the Whanake Taiao Team and my role was to interview and record kaumātua and kaikōrero about places of significance within the Maniapoto region. I am a trustee on Māori Land blocks, and a Te Kotahitanga Marae representative on the Nehenehenui Regional Management Committee. My interests lie in our shared iwi, hapū and whānau histories. I feel fortunate to have joined the Trust Board at such a significant time; during negotiations with the Crown toward Te Tiriti ō Waitangi settlement. I believe my contribution has added value to the program and I am motivated to see settlement through to fruition for the coming generations. In 2000 (with tautoko of MMTB) lead Wai 788 Maniapoto & Ngati Tama Cross Claims. Achieving Treaty Settlement(s) during 2021-24 accommodate interests for Iwi Self-Determination. Community Involvement: Maniapoto Hui-a-Iwi since 1996 including via Te Kawau Papakainga (Marae 1999-present), involved my Ngati Mahora/Hinewai Hapu with communities. I am a strong advocate for initiatives and programs that, • Promote and support whanau wellbeing, self-reliance, enterprise and success • Stimulate, develop and grow the Maniapoto collective economy • Nurture and protect the Maniapoto tribal identity, kawa, tikanga, cultural infrastructure and environment through our whanau, marae, hapu and iwi. However, I also believe that success in moving towards these aspirations will depend upon proactive participation and commitment by all Maniapoto and their respective whanau.

13 TOOTILL Glenn Kāwhia Moana, Kāwhia Kai, Kāwhia Tāngata With a legal background and having served two terms as trustee, one as representative for Ngā Tai o Kāwhia RMC and most recently as a generally elected member, it has been my honour and privilege to be trustee and Negotiator for the tribe as we look to finalise our Treaty settlement. As we move forward I believe it is particularly important that we provide stability on the board as we transition to the new entity. That is why I am standing again as trustee. For me, this election provides an opportunity for the iwi to provide a strong mandate of support for the Treaty settlement. I was raised in Ōtorohanga and completed the majority of my schooling there from Primary to Secondary School. In my final year of secondary school I attended Wesley College, and completed my tertiary studies at the Universities of Waikato and Auckland. I now live between Auckland and Kāwhia. I am Co-Director of MAPSS (Māori and Pasifika Support Services) which focuses on the intersection between Māori and Pasifika people’s and improving social, cultural and educational outcomes. I am a former academic of the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Education; Education Manager of the Auckland South Corrections Facility, and a former Secondary School Teacher. My interests and current work experience includes Education (Māori Immersion, Secondary School and Tertiary), Child and Kaumātua welfare, New School Builds, Teacher Development, Reo Māori Revitalisation, Digital App. Development, and the Youth Justice sector. I am also a keen supporter of rangatahi sport. My Governance experience includes a number of Independent Directorships for government organisations and charitable trusts. These include: The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), Manukau Institute of Technology, The Auckland Museum, Voyce: Whakarongo mai, Variety Children’s Charity, Man Alive Charitable Trust, Auckland Community Law Centre, the Auckland Kindergarten Association and COMET Auckland. It would be a honour to serve the iwi on the Maniapoto Trust Board.

I am the Chairman of Te Mana Taiao Advisory Group and the Nehenehenui Regional Management Committee as well as the MMTB representative on the Waikato Plan Leadership Committee, and Kaumātua Kaunihera. Having retired from a 30 year career in television I now dedicate my time to the work of the MMTB, the Ōtorohanga District Council and Development Board, and to the land blocks of Arapae 1, Pukeroa Hangitiki A55, A55 Reserve (Maniapoto’s Cave), A56, A58 Blocks, Te Uranga B2 Inc, Tainui Kawhia Inc, Ōtorohanga 1F4C Inc, Turoto D2, Tokorangi 1B1, Maraeroa A & B Trust, Ōtorohanga 1F4A & Orahiri 1 Sec 1D2, and Rangitoto A30B. I would like to continue as a Trustee of the MMTB to help complete the long and demanding yet rewarding task of finalising the Maniapoto Treaty Settlement to the establishment of the new Post Settlement Governance Entity whom I wish will invest in a commodity that cannot be replaced and provides a safe and everlasting place for us to stand proud, enriched, and nourished – Papatūānuku. ‘Te toto o te tangata he kai. Te oranga o te tangata he whenua.’ The lifeblood of a person is derived from food; the livelihood of a people depends on land.
