Ousman Kobo, Advisor Antoinette Errante Ahmad Sikianga i Copyright by Henryatta Louise Ballah 2012 ii Abstract This dissertation explores the historical causes of the Liberian civil war (1989- 2003), with a keen attention to the history of Liberian youth, since the beginning of the Republic in 1847. I carefully analyzed youth engagements in social and political change throughout the country’s history, including the ways by which the civil war impacted the youth and inspired them to create new social and economic spaces for themselves. As will be demonstrated in various chapters, despite their marginalization by the state, the youth have played a crucial role in the quest for democratization in the country, especially since the 1960s. I place my analysis of the youth in deep societal structures related to Liberia’s colonial past and neo-colonial status, as well as the impact of external factors, such as the financial and military support the regime of Samuel Doe received from the United States during the cold war and the influence of other African nations. I emphasize that the socio-economic and political policies implemented by the Americo- Liberians (freed slaves from the U.S.) who settled in the country beginning in 1822, helped lay the foundation for the civil war. -

A PROCLAMATION BY THE PRESIDENT WHEREAS, it is virtuously befitting that a people and a nation, should recognize and pay homage to persons who contributively make significant impact for the installation of the State, and its perpetuity; and WHEREAS, the Creation of the Republic of Liberia, out of the aspiration of the African and his Descendents was made possible by the combined efforts of Those who came to these shores with Those whom they met here, with Joseph Jenkins Roberts, arriving on 9th February 1829 with the Robert’s Family, including his Mother, who wrote that they were “pleased with the Country and had not the least desire to leave” for any other place; and WHEREAS, Joseph Jenkins Roberts was preeminent in fostering the Movement of the “Colony” to inspire all those concerned resulting in the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Liberia on July 26, 1847, thus becoming “the Father of the Nation”; and WHEREAS, under his Leadership as Governor from 1822 to 1847, and as President, from 1847 to 1855, and then, from 1871 to 1876, Liberia developed along the West African Coast from the Shebro River to the Pedro River, counting approximately 600 miles of seacoast; and WHEREAS, under the role of an effective and objective Leadership, he substantiated many diplomatic, legal, political and social cornerstones for the continuation of the Republic of Liberia, which have remained as irrepressible and irreplaceable until today, from which our present Republic draws its strength in its independence and sovereign interactions with -

World Stage Curriculum Washington Irving’s Tour 1832 TEACHER You have been given a completed world stage and a world stage that your students can complete. This world stage is a snapshot of the world with Oklahoma, Cherokee Nation and Muscogee Creek Nation, at its center. The Pawnee, Comanche, and Kiowa were out to the west. Europe is to the north and east. Africa is to the south and east. South America is south and a bit east. Asia and the Pacific are to the west. Use a globe to show your students that these directions are accurate. Students - Directions 1. Your teacher will assign one of these actors to you. 2. After research, note the age of the actor in 1832, the year that Irving, Ellsworth, Pourtalès, and Latrobe took a Tour on the Oklahoma prairies. 3. SUSTAINABLE HIGH IMPACT INFRASTRUCTURE FOR EDUCATION AND AGRICULTURE ACTIVITY(SHINE) OCTOBER 2016 - OCTOBER 2020 I IMPLEMENTER: JLN-B360 JOINT VENTURES The Sustainable High Impact Infrastructure for Education and Agriculture (SHINE) activity will provide construction services for vertical infrastructure activities in support of the USAID funded projects in agriculture, higher education, economic governance and natural resource management. Key to the implementation of this construction project will include close coordination with relevant Government of Liberia (GOL) agencies/ministries and USAID funded mechanisms working in the related sectors. R. White2 Abstract The authors seek to connect global historical sociology with racial formation theory to examine how antislavery movements fostered novel forms of self-government and justifications for state formation. The cases of Haiti and Liberia demonstrate how enslaved and formerly enslaved actors rethought modern politics at the time, producing novel political subjects in the process. Prior to the existence of these nations, self-determination by black subjects in colonial spaces was impossible, and each sought to carve out that possibility in the face of a transatlantic structure of slavery. This work demonstrates how Haitian and Liberian American founders responded to colonial structures, though in Liberia reproducing them albeit for their own ends. The authors demonstrate the importance of colonial subjectivities to the discernment of racial structures and counter-racist action. They highlight how anticolonial actors challenged global antiblack oppression and how they legitimated their self-governance and freedom on the world stage. Theorizing from colonized subjectivities allows sociology to begin to understand the politics around global racial formations and starts to incorporate histories of black agency into the sociological canon. China * E-mail of the corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract This paper highlights and discusses the need for aligning expansion and quality of higher education in Liberia. It emphasizes that such initiative is inevitable to the sustainable economic growth and sociopolitical development of the country. Because with better education, Liberia as a country is sure to achieve political stability, create wealth and sustain growth. Honestly speaking, the existence of higher education institutions will make little or no impact on the nation’s national development agenda in the absence of quality as the ability to undertake initiatives and be innovative largely depends on the quality of knowledge acquired. Like other countries, this paper notes that Liberia’s higher education subsector continues to expand in various ways, intended to satisfy the access demand by the growing population. Consequently, there has been a tremendous increase from 3 to 30 tertiary institutions in the country. Capitalizing on Functionalist theorists’ view on HE expansion that universities can go a long way towards solving societal problems through development and use of new knowledge, this paper acquiesces, but underscores that ensuring quality is very vital in the fulfillment of HE purposes. -

I I M>, TEACHER EDUCATION IN LIBERIA Charles Arthur Mehaffey A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY March 1980 © 1980 Charles Arthur Mehaffey All Rights Reserved. il ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to make a historical, descrip tive, and analytical examination of institutions concerned with teacher education in Liberia. After looking at the Liberian national and educational background, an examination of the status of Liberian teachers was made. The main focus of this study was to examine the role that the W. V. S. Tubman Teachers College of the University of Liberia, Cuttington University College, and the Rural Teacher Training Institutes at Kakata and Zorzor have played, are playing, and will play in dealing with the problems and progress associated with teacher education in Liberia. A review of the Liberian national and educational background and the status of Liberian teachers revealed the need for improving the teacher education programs in Liberia. Both the quantity and preparation of the teachers in Liberia need to be improved to meet the nationally established goals. With the increase in population and demands for educational services, the future problems and frustrations facing these teacher education institutions also seem likely to increase. These four institutions primarily responsible for teacher education in Liberia, the W. V. S. Tubman Teachers Ill College of the University of Liberia, the Education Division of Cuttington University College, and the Rural Teacher Training Institutes at Zorzor and Kakata, have shown much progress in teacher education since 1947.
