ABSTRACT Founded in 1851, the Stourbridge School of Art offered instruction in drawing, art and design to students engaged in industries, especially glass. Using social history methodology and primary sources such as Government reports, local newspapers and school records, this thesis explores the school’s development from 1850 to 1905 and explicates its relationships with the local glass industry. Within the context of political, economic, social and cultural forces, the school contributed to the town’s civic culture and was supported by gentry, clergy and industrialists. The governing Council held public meetings and art exhibitions and dealt with management issues. Working class men attended evening classes. Women from wealthy families attended morning classes. -
The Crystal Palace
The Crystal Palace The Crystal Palace was a cast-iron and plate-glass structure originally The Crystal Palace built in Hyde Park, London, to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. More than 14,000 exhibitors from around the world gathered in its 990,000-square-foot (92,000 m2) exhibition space to display examples of technology developed in the Industrial Revolution. Designed by Joseph Paxton, the Great Exhibition building was 1,851 feet (564 m) long, with an interior height of 128 feet (39 m).[1] The invention of the cast plate glass method in 1848 made possible the production of large sheets of cheap but strong glass, and its use in the Crystal Palace created a structure with the greatest area of glass ever seen in a building and astonished visitors with its clear walls and ceilings that did not require interior lights. He was elected mayor of Birmingham in 1873. His pioneering efforts in educational reform, slum clearance, improved housing, and municipalisation of public utilities led to Birmingham being described as the ‘best governed city in the world’ (The Harpers Monthly 1890). The house called ‘Highbury’ and its surrounding 30 acre estate form one of Birmingham’s most important heritage sites. Commissioned by Joseph Chamberlain and completed in 1880, the Grade II* listed house was Les Sparks OBE designed by the prominent Birmingham architect J. H. Chamberlain. Chair, Chamberlain Highbury Trust The grounds are listed Grade II on Historic England’s Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest. The Chamberlain legacy is still the subject of debate and rightly so. Joe Chamberlain, as Churchill commented, ‘made the weather’ politically and was both adored and hated. The Commonwealth and the rich ethnic and cultural diversity we celebrate in today’s Birmingham, is distant from his time yet connected, for good or ill, to decisions made by ‘Brummagem Joe’. If modern Birmingham is to continue to grow and prosper, then the development of purposeful and ethical leadership models will be central to the stewardship of its public and private institutions and the promotion of successful entrepreneurship across its diverse population. -

His how to lay out a garden, running into several editions, is the best known and most influential of his written works, but there were others, notably editions of the hand-book of gardening and parks, gardens etc. of london and its suburbs, the first ever such regional survey. Kemp assisted Joseph Paxton with the editing of his publications, and was a regular and thoughtful contributor to magazines, most notably the gardeners’ chronicle, where his critiques, such as that of the then new gardens of Biddulph Grange, Staffordshire, received considerable attention. -
Reading Ruskin: Architecture and Social Reform in Australia, 1889–1908
The University of New South Wales Doctor of Philosophy Degree READING RUSKIN: ARCHITECTURE AND SOCIAL REFORM IN AUSTRALIA, 1889–1908 2010 MARK DOUGLAS STILES ABSTRACT This thesis examines the reception of John Ruskin’s work in Australia between 1889 and 1908, and seeks to answer two questions: what Australians made of Ruskin’s ideas at a critical moment in their history, and what we may make of Australia a century ago with Ruskin as our guide. The period covered here spans the decades before and after the federation of the Australian colonies in 1900, and the quest for political unity forms the background to the thesis. What Ruskin’s perspective adds to this account is his search for unity in diversity, a search paralleled in Australia in the struggle to establish the foundations of a just society. Because Ruskin thought that art, and especially architecture, was the true expression of national life and character, the thesis uses a study of Australian architecture to reflect on the search for social justice in this period. This study is developed by comparing the experiences of the progressive architects influenced by Ruskin with those of leading figures in the early Australian labour and feminist movements. Their contrasting perspectives fill out the account given here not only of the understanding of Ruskin’s work in Australia, but also of the hopes of Australian reformers in a turbulent period marked by economic distress and political unrest. Ruskin was not the only writer to find eager readers in Australia as it moved closer to Federation, but he was read by more people, and his opinions cited on a wider range of issues, than almost any other contemporary figure. -

It lies to the north of the busy town centre besides the expansive Back Water lagoon as a buffer between town and country. 1.3 A slip of land, the park and gardens were created in part to alleviate local unemployment through land reclamation within an area with an ancient history of trade and industry. In fact, the site is the only realised part of a much more ambitious scheme: Radipole Lakes, wherein leading landscape designers, Milner Son & White promoted a series of island destinations complete with tea gardens, boating lakes and sports facilities. -

robert lee preface: will the real edward kemp step forward? history has not been kind to edward kemp. he is recognized as a ‘leading fgure in the design of parks and gardens’ in mid-Victorian england, but despite his status as one of the most important and innovative landscape gardeners of his time, his achievements have been studiously neglected by landscape historians, at least until recently. all too often, coverage of kemp’s designs, whether for parks, cemeteries or offcial institutions, as well as private clients, has been very limited. Brent elliott’s Victorian Gardens (1986) includes a number of references to him, focusing on his advocacy of selecting plants that would harmonize with the residences of private clients, his approval of ‘globular or pyramidical, or conical, or square shapes’, and his preference for using rocky outcrops and plantations to create discrete enclosures in parks.1 But all the material was taken from kemp’s own writings without a wider analysis of how his designs evolved over time and with little consideration of his clients’ changing demands. indeed, there has never been a rigorous study of kemp’s landscape designs, even though it is acknowledged that ‘his words had weight’. the lives and achievements of other famous landscape gardeners, such as lancelot ‘capability’ Brown (1716–73), Uvedale price (1747–1829), Joseph paxton (1803–65), shirley hibberd (1805–90) and william robinson (1838–95), have all merited closer analysis through the publication of biographies and learned papers, although even in the case of Brown, at least before the tercentenary of his birth, it was recognized by david Jacques that research about him, as well as his rivals and associates, was still ‘intermittent’ and ‘fragmentary’.2 But, to my knowledge, kemp’s important contributions to landscape design in the nineteenth century have been almost entirely ignored; a proper biography has yet to be written; and Garden History has never been in a position to publish a paper on his achievements. -
