HISTORICAL SKETCH

In 1979, Roger Naber started booking bands on the side while maintaining a day job for the postal service in Kansas City. Attracting marquee performers to local venues such as the Lone Star, the Uptown Theater, the National Guard Armory, Harling’s Upstairs and King Henry’s Feast (later known as Parody Hall), he built a rapport with the music world and a reputation as a hardworking promoter. In 1980, he co-founded the Kansas City Society, galvanizing the local music scene during twelve years as the organization’s president. His tenacity made him one of Kansas City’s most respected promoters, but it was his genuine affinity for musicians that brought success to places like the Grand Emporium.

Naber and business partner George Myers bought the Grand Emporium in July 1985, transforming the erstwhile restaurant into a premier destination for live music. From show flyers doubling as wallpaper to a jukebox stocked with old 45s to the makeshift kitchen where “Amazing” Grace Harris served barbecue and soul food, the intimate midtown barroom offered common ground for patron and performer. It was here musicians walked the bar during a solo or took the show outside to Main Street for a song; big name stars were known to drop by for a slice of local flavor after playing bigger, more impersonal area venues; and local legends, such as musician and dancer Speedy Huggins, were fixtures on the scene, cutting up the dance floor and sitting in with bands.

Under the auspices of Naber, Myers (who died in 1998) and Herb Palmer (who joined the business in 1989), the reputed nightclub hosted some 7,400 shows and consistently earned top honors locally and nationally, including “Best Blues Club In America” in 1989 and 1991 from the Blues Foundation in Memphis. In addition, the Foundation has recognized Naber individually on multiple occasions. Though its calling card remained the blues, the Grand Emporium peppered the calendar with everything from local bands to world beats, often boasting live music seven nights a week.

The Grand Emporium was sold in 2004 amid much fanfare, culminating with a Memorial Day blowout. Naber remained active as a promoter, from area to music cruises with exotic ports of call. In 2002, he launched the Legendary Cruise, reviving a concept Myers spearheaded in the 1990s under a similar name – the Ultimate Rhythm And Blues Cruise.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Grand Emporium Collection was donated to LaBudde Special Collections in Summer 2004 by Roger Naber and C. Herb Palmer, co-owners of the Grand Emporium (along with George Myers). Chronicling from 1985-2004 the venerable Kansas City nightclub at 3832 Main Street, the collection consists of approximately 15,000 flyers, handbills, and posters; 4,000 photographs, negatives, and slides; 1,000 performer press kits; 450 music contracts; and other assorted ephemera and memorabilia. Additional material documents other promotional efforts undertaken by Naber, including the Kansas City Blues & Festival, the Kansas City Blues Society, and bookings for other venues, some of which predate his Grand Emporium days. Sound recordings round out the collection and are housed in the Marr Sound Archives.

In addition, three addendums of material have been added to the collection: George Myers Material (originally donated by Naber in 1998), Jennifer Leapheart Collection (2005), and John Tangeman Collection (2007) – all were integrated as related material into this collection.

SERIES NOTES

Series I: Press Kits Series I consists of performer press kits received and collected by Roger Naber for the Grand Emporium and other promotional endeavors. Material includes performer biographies, music press releases, and other promotional information packaged by the performer or representative entity (such as a record company or agent). For preservation and classification purposes, contracts, photographs and promotional posters were removed from press kits and are housed separately (see Series II, Series VI and Series VII). Press kits are grouped by performer name and contained in boxes 1-7.

Series II: Music Contracts Series II consists of three groupings: (1) music contracts for performances at the Grand Emporium, as well as for shows at other area venues and events negotiated by Roger Naber; (2) music contracts for the Kansas City Blues & Jazz Festival; and (3) contracts with the aforementioned festival’s sponsor, CommuniGroup of Kansas City, Inc (CGI). Music contracts are grouped by performer name; contracts with CGI are filed at the end of the series. Contracts are contained in boxes 8 and 9.

Series III: Office Records Series III consists of miscellaneous business material regarding the Kansas City Blues Society, the Kansas Blues & Jazz Festival, the Grand Emporium, and other organizational endeavors undertaken by Roger Naber, along with publicity items and administrative records. Material includes organization by-laws and directories, business cards, correspondence, distribution lists, financial records, legal agreements (see Series II for performer contracts), meeting minutes, newsletters, newspaper clippings, notes, receipts, reports, and festival information, including maps and stage plots. Office records are grouped by subject and contained in boxes 10 and 11.

Series IV: Calendars Series IV consists of Grand Emporium calendars from October 1986 through May 2004 (incomplete). Calendars are grouped by size, then by date; and contained in boxes 12 and 13. One oversized calendar is housed separately.

Series V: Plaque Awards Series V consists of plaque awards recognizing the Grand Emporium and/or Roger Naber for outstanding achievement. Material is contained in box 14.

Series VI: Photographs Series VI consists of publicity photographs, negatives, slides, snapshots and photocopies of performers. Also included are pictures taken at the Grand Emporium. Additional images document various non-Grand Emporium settings related to co-owners Roger Naber and George Myers, including music cruises, concerts, and personal and miscellaneous photographs. Photographs are contained in 50 boxes. One oversized photograph is housed separately.

MS38-Grand Emporium Collection 4 University of Missouri-Kansas City Dr. Kenneth J. LaBudde Department of Special Collections NOT TO BE USED FOR PUBLICATION

Series VII: Flyers/Posters Series VII consists of concert circulars and promotional posters. Paper flyers and paperboard concert posters chronicle shows at the Grand Emporium between 1985 and 2004, but also included are advertisements for non-Grand Emporium shows and events that Roger Naber booked as an independent promoter between 1979 and 2004. Glossy and matte promotional posters – stock templates distributed by a performer or representative entity that marketed the performer in general and, in some cases, provided write-in space for a venue to advertise a local show by the performer – were also collected by Naber during this period. Material is grouped by size first and then broken down as follows: Grand Emporium shows are grouped by principal performer and date, with secondary and opening acts noted; Grand Emporium shows with no clear headliner are grouped by first performer listed, with other performers noted; special events are grouped by date; non-Grand Emporium shows are grouped by venue name; promotional posters are grouped by performer name. Items 12” x 18” and smaller are contained in 17 boxes. Oversized material is housed separately.

Series VIII: Sound Recordings Series VIII primarily consists of cassettes and compact discs received from perspective performers and collected by promoter Roger Naber. Sound recordings (as well as a small amount of other media formats, including DVD and VHS) are housed in the Marr Sound Archives.

Addendum I: George Myers Material Originally donated by Roger Naber in 1998, this material consists of three boxes of unsorted material from of George Myers, co-founder of the Grand Emporium. Material consists of concert flyers, posters, and layout templates for the Grand Emporium, as well as financial receipts and other material related to the Ultimate Rhythm and Blues Cruise.

Addendum II: Jennifer Leapheart Collection The Jennifer Leapheart Collection was gifted to LaBudde Special Collections in November 2005, and was delivered on behalf of Leapheart by Cindy Terwilliger. The collection consists of Kansas City-area concert circulars, promotional music posters, and a concert calendar for the Grand Emporium.

Addendum III: John Tangeman Collection The John Tangeman Collection was gifted to LaBudde Special Collections by Tangeman in Summer 2007. The collection consists of Kansas City-area circulars for concerts and events, music festival programs and posters, (Kansas City) Blues News publications, and other miscellaneous ephemera.
