Imagine what John's disciples did with this when they debated with Peter and the gang. (It's incomprehensible that the two groups of disciples didn't run into each other now and then — and the guys we know from Jesus' company would hardly have avoided the opportunity to compare their respective teachers.) The New Testament never presents John as a disciple of Jesus, but this story makes it look like Jesus is playing second fiddle. "Me baptize you?" asks John. Matthew portrays John as humbly reluctant to baptize Jesus. Scripture scholars suggest that Matthew used that detail to diminish the shocking picture of Jesus submitting to John. It may be that Matthew wrote as he did to defend Jesus' preeminence, but contemplation of the story leads us beyond comparing the two in relation to one another. In fact, the Gospels' admission that Jesus accepted John's baptism turns out to be the first revelation of how Jesus presented himself as Emmanuel: an unimagina- ble, exceptionally humble, incarnation of God in the midst of humanity. Fr Gene Silent Auction for Extreme Faith Camp at SJ St Joseph will be sending youth the Extreme Faith Camp again this summer. Extreme Faith Camp is a Catholic summer camp for mid- dle school students and high school students have the opportunity to be on the prayer leadership team. It is full of exciting adventures like rock climbing, ropes courses, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, mountain biking, and camp wide games; as well as powerful engaging talks, music and a wide variety of prayer experiences including Mass, Adoration, Confession, the Liturgy of the Hours and more. The fee for this camp is $415 We welcome per student. A lot of families cannot afford that. We will be doing a few different Carly Jane Winkler fundraisers to help these youth get to camp. Sometime late this winter we will be at the door of the Church through the holding a silent auction. Start thinking about craft or wooden products you could Sacrament of Baptism contribute for this auction. Thank you for all your continued support!
