Firefighter Caught up in Multi-car Pileup Photos by John Donovan

HRFD Firefighter John Donovan, along with his wife and son, were caught up in the fiery multi-vehicle pileup on snowy roads on Interstate 94 near Battle Creek, Michigan. The pileup was in both directions on Jan.9, killing at least one person and injuring a number of others. Michigan State Police now say 193 vehicles were involved, including dozens of semi-trucks. John said they were traveling home in his pickup with his daughters behind him in a car. They were returning from his mother-in-law’s funeral in Michigan and they feel she may have been their guardian angel because his daughter missed the turnoff to I-94 and luckily her little car was no longer behind them when John came upon the accident. John recalled, “I was able to stop behind a semi and my wife turned around to talk to my son in the back seat and saw a semi coming up behind us that wasn’t stopping. I watched in the rear view mirror as the truck hit us. We were pushed into the semi in front of us, but luckily we glanced off of it as that semi behind us crashed then into the semi that had been in front of us.” The three of them were bruised and battered, but grateful to be alive. He said they had to wait a couple hours before they brought buses in to get people off the road. John’s 3-week old truck was totaled. Photo by Sheryl Drost

As of Feb. 4, there are 14 left. Even with high winds and slippery snow-covered roads the trucks made it in. Firefighter Ryan Sarver uses a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire.
