Academic Achievements: Datuk Dr. Beth Baikan has a wide educational experience and academic achievements ranging from Agronomy, Economics, Environment, Home Economics, Turfgrass Science (Golf Course Management) to Theology. The following are her academic achievements: Datuk Dr. Beth Baikan holds:

(i) Ph.D. Degree in Turfgrass Science from Cornell University USA (1993) with a Dissertation Title: Determination of efficient ways in turfgrass water conservation through cultural practices, species and genotypic selections and irrigation methods which was financed through grant from the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program.

Her Ph.D minors are : 1. Agricultural Economics (Production Economics) and 2. Agronomy (Soil Water Conservation and Environmental Management)

(ii) 1-year Post- Doctoral Research in Molecular Biology and Turfgrass Breeding and DNA-Finger-Printing at Rutgers University, New Jersey 1994

(iii) M.Sc. Degree in Agribusiness Economics and Plant and Soil Science with a Thesis entitled: Agro-Economic Evaluation of Intensive Wheat Management With and Without Growth Regulator.

Her thesis won an Outstanding Graduate Student Award, which was awarded by the North Central Soil Fertility Society of America.

(iv) B. Sc. Degree in Agronomy and Agricultural Economics (Double Majors) and a minor in Office Administration

(v) Certificate in Home-Economics and a 3-year Certificate of Agronomy from the Agriculture Training Center and Agriculture Institute Timbang Menggaris in which she was awarded the “Top Student Award” from both the Agriculture Training and The Agriculture Institute. She also has a brief stint in theological Study in Systematic Theology from the Catholic University of America which she decided to discontinue after a year in Theological Study.

7. State Highest Award: For her continuous contribution to the community in Environment, Education and Social, Datuk Dr. Baikan was awarded by the TYT-Sabah with a Panglima Gemilang Darjah Kinabalu which carries the title :Datuk in 2008.

8. Brief History of involvement, Achievements and contribution in Community, Association and Profession: Achievements in Association and Profession

i. Datuk Dr. Beth Baikan who completed her Bachelor Degree in Science with multiple majors (2 majors and a minor) in a record time of only two and a half year from 0 credits and is one of a few Malaysian Women to have a wide educational background.

ii. She is the only Sabahan to receive a 100%Yayasan Sabah Loan Conversion into Scholarship for Excellent Student Achievements for Overseas Students which was granted when she was offered a full assistantship by Cornell University of America.

iii. Datuk Dr. Baikan is first and only Malaysian woman to hold a Ph.D. degree in a male dominated Golf Course/Turfgrass Management field from the prestigious Cornell University.

iv. Datuk Dr. Baikan was appointed to the Board of Directors of University Sabah in 2004 to 2012 and member of the Audit, disciplinary and remuneration committees of the University Malaysia Sabah from 2004 to 2012.

v. As a recognition of her contribution to academic excellence, she was appointed as and Academic Associate to the School of Sustainably Agriculture, University Malaysia Sabah 2010 to 2012

vi. In 2005, she was nominated to receive the Southeast Missouri State University Alumni Award of Merit.

x. She was the National Team Leader and Regional Deputy Team Leader for the Coral Triangle Southeast Asia- Asian Development Bank Project: (ADB- RETA-7813) project for Malaysia from August 2011 to October 2014.

Involvement and Contribution in Community: Datuk Dr. Baikan is a frequent contributor to several charitable organizations including the Monfort Youth Training Centre, the Catholic Church both in Sabah and the USA, . She was also a volunteer English Teacher at the Monfort Youth Training Center and currently a volunteer teacher in Sunday School.

SUMMARY OF EXPERTISE/EXPERIENCE

Datuk Dr. Beth Baikan is currently a Principal Fellow/Lecturer (Grade VK7) at University Malaysia (Three year contract from February 4th 2016 – February 3rd 2019) She hold a position as the Head of Research Development and Agriculture Extension of the Institute of Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture, University Malaysia Kelantan.

Prior to joining University Malaysia Kelantan, she was the owner and Managing Director of Sustainable Environment Management and Planning Sdn. Bhd from 1997 – 2016.

 Experience in Managerial and Directorial level  Twenty (20) years as Principal Consultant/Managing Director of SEPM Sdn. Bhd. Apart from being the head of Research Development and Sustainable Agriculture for the Institute of Food Security and Sustainability of University Malaysia Kelantan, she is also the lecturer of the following subjects at undergraduate level at the University Malaysia Kelantan:

 Postharvest Technology of Agricultural Product.  Fruit Product Development  Turfgrass Management and Landscaping  Environmental Impact Assessment.

In her duties as a lecturer in Turfgrass Management and Landscaping, she has successfully initiated and created an EDIBLE LANDSCAPE GARDEN with maze design, the first ever in Malaysia. She has also constructed two EDIBLE TUNNEL Garden for the University Malaysia Kelantan, the first ever edible tunnel created in University setting.
