Pfister Danny Haelewaters STUDIES OF THE LABOULBENIOMYCETES: DIVERSITY, EVOLUTION, AND PATTERNS OF SPECIATION ABSTRACT CHAPTER 1: Laboulbeniales is one of the most morphologically and ecologically distinct orders of Ascomycota. These microscopic fungi are characterized by an ectoparasitic lifestyle on arthropods, determinate growth, lack of asexual state, high species richness and intractability to culture. DNA extraction and PCR amplification have proven difficult for multiple reasons. DNA isolation techniques and commercially available kits are tested enabling efficient and rapid genetic analysis of Laboulbeniales fungi. Success rates for the different techniques on different taxa are presented and discussed in the light of difficulties with micromanipulation, preservation techniques and negative results. CHAPTER 2: The class Laboulbeniomycetes comprises biotrophic parasites associated with arthropods and fungi. -

This is the first record of the ash whitefly Siphoninus phillyreae (Haliday, 1835) and its parasitoid Encarsia inaron (Walker, 1839) on Fraxinus sp. in Morelos, Mexico. Las moscas blancas (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) son insectos fitófagos de gran impor- tancia que atacan una amplia diversidad de cultivos, plantas ornamentales y árboles de sombra como el fresno (Fraxinus sp.), el cual es plantado por gobiernos locales en las calles de las ciudades formando parte del paisaje urbano. Las moscas blancas se han estudiado durante muchos años por su importancia económica y biológica, se ali- mentan en las hojas y ovipositan en el tejido foliar donde existen otros competidores, además de ser un área frecuentada por enemigos naturales (Gerling 2002). Los afelí- nidos (Hymenoptera) son efectivos agentes de control biológico de moscas blancas e insectos escama (Williams 1996), donde muchas de las especies del género Encarsia son parasitoides primarios de Aleyrodidae y Diaspididae (Hemiptera) (Polaszek et al. 1999, Manzari et al. 2002). El 1º marzo de 2010, se colectaron hojas de fresno con adultos y pupas de mosca blanca en la ciudad de Cuernavaca, Morelos, las cuales fueron trasladadas al labora- torio del primer autor en la Facultad de Agronomía de la Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas, y colocadas en cajas Petri para esperar la emergencia de parasitoides. -

AN ANNOTATED CHECKLIST OF THE COCCINELLID (COLEOPTERA COCCINELLIDAE) INTRODUCTIONS AND ESTABLISHMENTS IN HAWAII: 1885 to 2015 JOHN R. LEEPER PO Box 13086 Las Cruces, NM USA, 88013 [email protected] [1] Abstract. Blackburn & Sharp (1885: 146 & 147) described the first coccinellids found in Hawaii. The first documented introduction and successful establishment was of Rodolia cardinalis from Australia in 1890 (Swezey, 1923b: 300). This paper documents 167 coccinellid species as having been introduced to the Hawaiian Islands with forty-six (46) species considered established based on unpublished Hawaii State Department of Agriculture records and literature published in Hawaii. The paper also provides nomenclatural and taxonomic changes that have occurred in the Hawaiian records through time. INTRODUCTION The Coccinellidae comprise a large family in the Coleoptera with about 490 genera and 4200 species (Sasaji, 1971). The majority of coccinellid species introduced into Hawaii are predacious on insects and/or mites. Exceptions to this are two mycophagous coccinellids, Calvia decimguttata (Linnaeus) and Psyllobora vigintimaculata (Say). Of these, only P. vigintimaculata (Say) appears to be established, see discussion associated with that species’ listing. The members of the phytophagous subfamily Epilachninae are pests themselves and, to date, are not known to be established in Hawaii. None of the Coccinellidae in Hawaii are thought to be either endemic or indigenous. All have been either accidentally or purposely introduced. Three species, Scymnus discendens (= Diomus debilis LeConte), Scymnus ocellatus (=Scymnobius galapagoensis (Waterhouse)) and Scymnus vividus (= Scymnus (Pullus) loewii Mulsant) were described by Sharp (Blackburn & Sharp, 1885: 146 & 147) from specimens collected in the islands. There are, however, no records of introduction for these species prior to Sharp’s descriptions. -

Entomol. 102(3): 1116Ð1122 (2009) ABSTRACT The effect of taxa [common Bermuda grass, Cynodon dactylon (L.); centipedegrass, Eremochloa ophiuroides Munro Hack; St. Augustinegrass, Stenotaphrum secundatum [Walt.] Kuntze; and zoysiagrass, Zoysia spp.], density, height, and weed density on abundance of natural enemies, and their potential prey were evaluated in residential turf. Total predatory Heteroptera were most abundant in St. Augustinegrass and zoysiagrass and included Anthocoridae, Lasiochilidae, Geocoridae, and Miridae. Anthocoridae and Lasiochilidae were most common in St. Augustinegrass, and their abundance correlated positively with species of Blissidae and Delphacidae. Chinch bugs were present in all turf taxa, but were 23Ð47 times more abundant in St. Augustinegrass. Anthocorids/lasiochilids were more numerous on taller grasses, as were Blissidae, Delphacidae, Cicadellidae, and Cercopidae. Geocoridae and Miridae were most common in zoysiagrass and were collected in higher numbers with increasing weed density. However, no predatory Heteroptera were affected by grass density. Other beneÞcial insects such as staphylinids and parasitic Hymenoptera were captured most often in St. Augustinegrass and zoysiagrass. These differences in abundance could be in response to primary or alternate prey, or reßect the inßuence of turf microenvironmental characteristics. In this study, SimpsonÕs diversity index for predatory Heteroptera showed the greatest diversity and evenness in centipedegrass, whereas the herbivores and detritivores were most diverse in St. Augustinegrass lawns. These results demonstrate the complex role of plant taxa in structuring arthropod communities in turf. -

Nataša Turić, docent Komentor: Dr. sc. Goran Vignjević, docent Kratak sažetak diplomskog rada: Bubamare ili božje ovčice su kukci (Insecta) iz reda kornjaša (Coleoptera) i porodice Coccinellidae. Cilj ovog rada bio je utvrditi prisutnost i faunistički sastav bubamara na području grada Nove Gradiške i okolnih mjesta unutar Brodsko – posavske županije. Tijekom dvomjesečnog istraživanja 2020. godine, na 6 lokaliteta, uzorkovane su ukupno 622 jedinke iz porodice Coccinellidae. Jedinke su svrstane u 10 vrsta, 10 rodova i 3 potporodice. Kao najbrojnija vrsta utvrđena je Harmonia axyridis s uzorkovanih 373 jedinke odnosno 59,97% ukupnog broja jedinki, a slijedi vrsta Coccinella septempunctata sa 153 uzorkovane jedinke, tj. -
