Y es especialmente difícil cuando se dan dos circunstancias: de un lado, que a quien esto escribe le unía un enorme afecto personal con Isabel, que le profesaba un cariño inmenso que viene de muy lejos; de otro lado, que la muerte de una discípula y una amiga, la profesora González Cano, ha pasado por encima del orden natural de las cosas, porque los compañeros de su promoción, y los de generaciones anteriores seguimos en activo y ella ha fallecido cuando no le tocaba, porque la lógica dicta que los hijos deben enterrar a sus padres, y no al revés, y que las generaciones deben sucederse en orden cronológico, desapareciendo primero las más viejas; por eso, cuando se produce un salto en la secuencia ordenada de la vida, como ha sucedido con la inesperada y tremenda muerte de Isabel, crujen todas las cuadernas de nuestro ser. Soy de algunas generaciones anteriores a Isabel, y he tenido el privilegio de acompañarla desde el comienzo de su andadura universitaria. Por eso me halaga que la dirección de la revista de la Asociación de Profesores de Derecho Procesal de las Universidades Españolas (ADPDUE) haya querido en su primer número incluir una nota en memoria de quien era su vicepresidenta, Isabel González Cano, que contribuyó con su valía y con su esfuerzo a hacer realidad este proyecto. Es un honor trasladarles algunos retazos de su persona y de sus capacidades académicas, y que me permitan compartir con estas líneas el afecto por la mujer que ha sido y el inmenso dolor que siento, que muchos sentimos, por su pérdida irreparable. Isabel González Cano era una trabajadora infatigable, que sobresalía por encima de los que le rodeaban, con una inquietud intelectual asombrosa, que le exigía adentrarse en campos académicos inexplorados por el Derecho procesal. Esas iniciativas, que en la mayoría de los casos partían de ella y en otros pocos se sumaba con entusiasmo, le situaron con poco más de 50 años en el pelotón de cabeza de los procesalistas españoles. Su presente era pleno e intenso y su futuro estaba escrito entre los mejores. Pero se ha ido cuando no le correspondía porque estaba en la flor de la vida, en plenitud de sus facultades intelectuales, con una fuerza enorme de emprender y transitar por campos desconocidos, abriendo caminos nuevos y capaz de diseñar y sostener proyectos innovadores. Ha pasado casi un año de aquel trágico día de octubre cuando recibí una llamada diciéndome que en Portugal, al final de un Congreso científico, había fallecido la profesora González Cano. Era increíble; estaba fuera de los esquemas normales de la vida. Tuve el privilegio de conocer a Isabel González Cano allá por el año 1987, cuando era alumna de Derecho en la Facultad de Sevilla, y me encontré con un grupo de estudiantes que se ilusionaron con el Derecho procesal, una materia tenida comúnmente por árida y memorística, y cuatro de ellos decidieron hacer la tesis doctoral en esta especialidad y seguir carrera universitaria. En vano les previne a todos ellos de las dificultades del camino, que era una verdadera aventura, y les advertí del largo tiempo que habrían de invertir y de los grandes esfuerzos que no siempre se verían recompensados. Estaban decididos y en este empeño siguieron todos ellos. Comenzaron su andadura en 1989. Pero faltaba un escalón más y, dos años más tarde, le propuse a Isabel que se desplazara a Madrid, para seguir en la Universidad Carlos III su incipiente actividad universitaria. Este reto creo que la espoleó y asumió el traslado a una Universidad recién creada, que estaba a las afueras de Madrid, sin tradición universitaria y en unas instalaciones que hasta entonces habían sido militares… Pocos alicientes y muchas dificultades que, no obstante, la profesora González Cano quiso y supo afrontar. En esa joven Universidad, conviviendo con compañeros procesalistas de otras procedencias, contribuyó a poner en marcha el apasionante proyecto universitario de la Carlos III, su segunda casa. En el año 1993 terminó su tesis doctoral sobre el Juez de Vigilancia Penitenciaria que mereció la máxima calificación y el premio extraordinario de doctorado. Plenamente integrada con quienes dirigían los rumbos de esta criatura académica, la profesora González Cano pudo presumir siempre de haber contribuido en primera persona a desarrollar con un gran esfuerzo personal una incipiente institución pública que ha conseguido, con el paso del tiempo,

Once again, the Handbook has been revised and updated to reflect the evolution of this discipline, and the many strategic, operational and technical challenges OSINT practitioners have to grapple with. Given the speed of change on the web, some might question the wisdom of pulling together such a resource. What’s wrong with the Top 10 tools, or the Top 100? There are only so many resources one can bookmark after all. Such arguments are not without merit. My fear, however, is that they are also shortsighted. I offer four reasons why. To begin, a shortlist betrays the widening spectrum of OSINT practice. Whereas OSINT was once the preserve of analysts working in national security, it now embraces a growing class of professionals in fields as diverse as journalism, cybersecurity, investment research, crisis management and human rights. A limited toolkit can never satisfy all of these constituencies. Second, a good OSINT practitioner is someone who is comfortable working with different tools, sources and collection strategies. The temptation toward narrow specialisation in OSINT is one that has to be resisted. Why? Because no research task is ever as tidy as the customer’s requirements are likely to suggest. Third, is the inevitable realisation that good tool awareness is equivalent to good source awareness. Indeed, the right tool can determine whether you harvest the right information.
