Campus Life: a Policy Handbook 2020-2021 CAMPUS LIFE: A POLICY HANDBOOK 2020-2021 Revised July 27, 2020 1 Campus Life: A Policy Handbook provides information about academic and other student-related matters for those who participate in the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School community. It is an annual addendum to the catalogue issued by the School and contains within it the most current policies that guide and regulate our community life. Members of the community are responsible for knowing these policies and for abiding by them. Consistent with the requirements and options under applicable law, the School reserves the right to revise the handbook and policies from it as the School administration deems appropriate. VISION Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School will be faithful to its distinctive Christian identity as the institution becomes a seminary of and for the community, committed to practices of peace, service and justice. 7 STATEMENT OF EDUCATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS Statement of Educational Effectiveness Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School is committed to effective education and preparation for a variety of Christian ministries in the Church and justice work in society as well as preparing future scholars and leaders in academia. As a measure of educational effectiveness, recent master’s level graduates (2012-2016) have the following placement rates: 52% Parish Ministry 14% Chaplaincy 14% Nonprofit/Social Work 7% Pursuing additional Advanced Degree 2% Higher Education Teaching/Administration 11% Unknown/Miscellaneous (Source: Alumni/ae records) 2017 Program Completion Rates The completion rate for the Master of Divinity degree program is 80% within six years. The completion rate for the Master of Arts degree program is 50% within four years. The completion rate for the Doctor of Ministry degree program is 50% within six years. (Source: 2016 Graduation Rates reported to the Association of Theological Schools) 8 STUDENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES The central mission of CRCDS is to prepare women and men for ministry in an ecumenical Christian community of teaching, learning and worship. This Christian community requires students, staff, and faculty of Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School to exercise mutuality, respect, and the highest standards of personal and academic integrity. Community members must exercise their personal rights and responsibilities in such a way as to be compatible with these values. The following document provides information about student rights and responsibilities. Statement of Inclusiveness: Ministry today is exercised in ecumenical and pluralistic contexts. Shaped by the gospel principle that God is the Creator of all persons and of the whole world, the Divinity School is mindful of the interdependence of the worldwide human community. The Vancouver School of Theology has confirmed its Convocation Ceremonies will be conducted virtually this year in keeping with directives related to the COVID-19 pandemic.     Proposal for selection of new higher doctorate academic dress Scott Pilkington October 2019 Executive Summary AUT has recently had approved by CUAP the addition of two higher doctorates (DLitt and DSc) in addition to the suite of current named and other doctorates (PhD, DHSc, and EdD). There is the potential that additional higher doctorates may be created in future (e.g. LLD, DEng). As such, an opportunity is presented to develop new academic dress for these qualifications that sets them apart from the other doctorates being awarded by the university. Following here is an analysis of the historical context and review of other universities, and then the proposal for new doctoral academic dress (regalia) at AUT. Four designs have been proposed, with design D (p37) being recommended by the Graduate Research School for adoption. Costings have been obtained and are provided in appendix 4 (p28). The design recommended blends the styles used for the current doctorates and for the official party to facilitate a design that is sufficiently elevated to recognise the life work of a graduate, without competing with the finery worn by the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor.     NEWSLETTER Queen’s College Faculty of Theology September 2020 This Newsletter is distributed electronically, it has links to more information on our website www.queenscollegenl.ca Greetings from the Provost We are well into the semester and, thanks to our Leadership Team, faculty members, students, and our Administrative Assistant – Ms Dana Bishop, things are going fairly smooth. We certainly miss some of our regular on-campus activities … especially chapel, common room and outreach ministries. But, we have all grown in discovering our capacities to adapt and engage using technologies. This Newsletter has good information on our Fall 2020 Semester initiatives. Please have a look through the Newsletter and connect with us about anything on which you would like to follow up. I am pleased to inform you that we are making arrangements for Queen’s College Convocation 2020. We are planning for a Convocation at Jack Byrne Arena on Torbay Road, Torbay on November 25 at 7:00 p.m. It is a suitable venue and has been used for other graduations in the past. It can accommodate our numbers within the Public Health COVID-19 regulations. We are working with the management of Jack Byrne Arena to develop the plan and clear directions to ensure safety and contact tracing. We will have more information in our October Newsletter. As we continue in this unusual year, I ask for prayers that we courageously discern and respond to God’s will, and I ask for patience and flexibility as we endeavour to discern how to prepare people for ministry in the world and church in this time of rapid and radical change.

    Principles for Awarding Honorary Doctoral Degrees o The awarding of an honorary doctoral degree is a highly public action that brings visibility and distinction to both the recipient and to the University as grantor. It is also among the highest honors the University can confer. This distinction should, therefore, be given only for extraordinary accomplishments and in strict conformity with criteria approved by the Board of Trustees. o Honorary degree recipients share one commonality: Extraordinary distinction. However, the ways in which they demonstrate this distinction, the areas in which they have achieved it, and their geographic locations are likely to be diverse. o That a nominee may be controversial is not, in itself, reason to deny a degree honoris causa to an otherwise worthy recipient; however, no degree should be awarded to any individual when doing so could be reasonably expected to bring dishonor or embarrassment to the University. o Honorary degrees conferred by the University of Toledo do not give honorees who do not possess earned doctoral degrees the right to use the title of "Dr." All recipients of honorary degrees may, however, list their honorary degrees in their biographies, resumes, or curricula vitae. o The University will award honorary doctorates only. o The University confers honorary degrees at its main winter and spring Commencement exercises. The University also may confer honorary degrees at separate Commencement exercises of the College of Medicine & Life Sciences, College of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences and College of Law.     Oklahoma State University Policy and Procedures 2-0220 AWARDING HONORARY DEGREES ACADEMIC AFFAIRS December 2014 POLICY 1.01 Institutions in the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education are authorized to confer honorary degrees granted by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. Oklahoma State University typically awards an honorary doctoral degree in recognition of a career of extraordinary accomplishment that has benefited society through intellectual, artistic, scientific, professional, or public service contributions. In many cases, a candidate may be best known for a single achievement; but an honorary degree is not given to celebrate a deed alone or upon simply meeting a set of minimum standards. CRITERIA 2.01 The following criteria shall guide in the selection of individuals to receive honorary degrees and in the awarding of such degrees. A. Oklahoma State University shall confer honorary degrees only at the highest level for which it is authorized to award earned degrees, namely the Doctoral level. B. Any such honorary degree shall be distinguishable from earned degrees. Typical examples are listed in the Appendix. C. An honorary degree may be conferred only after receiving approval from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. D. Oklahoma State University will follow the policies of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education in determining the number of honorary degrees to be granted. E. Oklahoma State University shall not confer honorary degrees upon any faculty member, administrator, or other official associated with the University until such individuals have been separated from the University for two or more academic semesters. F. Oklahoma State University will not recommend awarding an honorary degree for an emeritus faculty member of the University unless that person has been recognized for outstanding achievement or has pursued a meritorious second career.
