North Fork River outfitter Sunburst Ranch has new owners. Bryan and Stephanie Bade bought the camp- ground, cabin and canoe outfitter April 1 from Justin and Amy Spencer, who had owned the resort for the last 15 years. The new owners say Sunburst will have the same policies, prices and offerings as it has always had, and the Spencers will be on site working alongside the Bades at Sunburst this summer, making the transition a smooth one. “With their love of the outdoors and our river, Bryan and Stephanie are the perfect fit for Sunburst,” former owner Amy Spencer said. “They are excited to take County endures another round of rough weather Sunburst forward, and they have a lot of great ideas for the future.” By Sue Ann Jones, [email protected] The Bades relocated from St. Louis and now live in a house on the Sunburst property. SENATE REPORT OPINION by Sen. Mike Cunningham 33rd Senatorial District

Few Missourians expect much from their legislature As I prepare this column on Thursday, May 16, for distri- bution to newspapers throughout the 33rd Senatorial District, the legislature is still in session. Our discussions and debates about legislative proposals will come to an end within a few hours, as the Missouri Constitution demands we conclude our work at 6 p.m. Friday, May 17. By the time this legislative report is printed in your local newspaper, whatever I have to say about the 2019 session will be old news. The national news media turned its eyes to Missouri this morning, with reports that the Senate has passed sweeping legislation to limit abortions in our state. Little else we accomplish in the remaining hours will be noticed or remembered. The Senate’s passage of this legislation at 4 a.m. Thursday came after a difficult week in the Missouri legis- lature. Various factions of the Senate have defended strongly held beliefs and princi- ples and adopted extreme measures to advance their argu- ments. It will take a while to process all the events of the 2019 legislative session. For now, I prefer to focus on See SENATE REPORT, Page A5

By Janet Taber Special to the Times

Blacksmiths were essential members of early Ozarks communities, performing necessary tasks vital to the daily life of settlers. Using anvil, hammer and forge, their skills in heating and shaping metal allowed them to build and repair tools such as plows, wagon wheels, knives and other implements that were essential to the life of people who were settling a new country. Today, blacksmiths, while fewer in number, still work with metal, heating and shaping it in much the same way. But because of the ready availability of mass- produced tools, the products produced are often quite different. There is a still a demand for high-quality, handmade metal objects, but now blacksmiths are able to focus on specialty items -- and in the case of one Ozark County man, the end result is art. Jim Davis of Thornfield is reluctant to allow his creations to be called art because he doesn’t consider himself an artist. However, when examples of Davis’ work are displayed at the Ozark County Historium for the next several weeks, those who see it are going to know that this is not the work of an ordinary metalworker. Davis is a metal sculptor whose pieces reflect creativity, ornamentation and whim- sy, all hallmarks of true art. While many artists have moved to the Ozarks seeking inspiration, that was not the case for Jim and his wife, Carol, who came to Ozark County in 1975. They were, instead, looking for a small farm where they could introduce their children to a country life. Jim grew up in eastern Oregon, and Carol hailed from Florida. They met and married in California, and later lived in Colorado where they owned a See HISTORIUM, Page A7

Davis’ artistic creations, like this woodpecker, appeal to children as well as adults of all ages. His work will be displayed at the Historium from May 24 through June. The exhibit is free and open to everyone. TIMES PAST compiled by Mary Ruth Luna Sparks TECUMSEH by Linnie Ingram I am enjoying the iris, peonies, spirea and bridal wreath in my yard, and I also have red roses and flowering almond. I’ve got a bunch of blooms, and I am truly enjoying them. I also have a “blue” rosebush that now is full of purple blooms. The first year I had it, the roses were blue but then they turned to purple. My daughter Kris went to Forsyth Sunday for a gradua- tion party for her brother Marlyn’s grandkids. They were Alex Vega, graduating from high school, and Olivia Vega, graduating from eighth grade. My granddaughter Alexus will be celebrating her 12th birthday on May 30. My neighbor to the south, Paralea, says she has no news and doesn’t expect any. Her redbud is pretty, and I would like to have some of its buds to make cookies. You put the buds in sugar cookie dough, and the cookies are flavorful as well as pretty. Some advice: drink sassafras tea as a good spring tonic. (I know many don’t care for it, and that includes my daugh- ters, but I find it refreshing.) My neighbor Jerry Miller’s gardening efforts are paying off for her son’s family and for me. I am grateful to be included in her generosity. From my personal family experience, I recommend avoiding the smoking habit. My husband was a cancer patient in Buffalo, New York. My daughter Karen went with me when my husband, Glen, a smoker, was there in the This 1912 photo, from the Ozark County Historium’s collection, has this handwritten note at the bottom: “Basket 1970s. ••• Herman and Millard were among the first American soldiers to enter World War II in North Africa under the command of General Patton. Dad took me to one movie. I didn’t realize it at the time, but it wasn’t just a movie. It was Dad’s story. The movie was Patton. When I was an adult, Dad told me how he had been court-martialed by a general. Dad and a couple of other guys had run out of ammunition and found a ship where they could steal some. They got caught, and the Navy declared that they were in big trouble as Patton was onboard and they were going in front of old Blood and Guts himself. The general informed them if they’d stolen anything else except something to get back into the fight, he’d have had their asses. Instead, they got five days hard labor onboard the ship. But then all hell broke loose a couple of hours later, and they had to rejoin their outfit. So much for the hard labor . . .
