Toddlers Toddler Toys are missing the children very much - the play tent is empty; the paints miss making pictures; the tea-set misses giving cups of tea; the playdough misses creating shapes; the cars miss driving on the road mat; the teddies miss their cuddles and we all miss each other! And when it is safe to do so we will meet together again, there will be singing once more and stories to be told. May you and your families keep well and “Happy Birthday” to Albert and Sarah who will both be three in June. Jane Update on St Michael’s Church Roof Project Following last month’s article in the BKN about progress on our project, I am pleased to announce that our outstanding match funding application from the Garfield Weston Foundation has been approved. This means that our financial concerns about doing the work have been resolved. We are planning for the work to be done during the latter part of the Summer, probably between July and September. The only difficulty that could possibly frustrate this is Diocesan permission to do work on the church during the Covid-19 outbreak. Ged BRENT KNOLL AND MARK TENNIS CLUB The Tennis Club has reopened in a restricted way, following a two month Covid-19 shut down. Social distancing measures are in place and only four players are allowed on the courts at one time. Matches, group coaching and all social club play are on hold. Hopefully, tennis will slowly return to normal during the Summer as government restrictions ease. Please contact Alison on [email protected] if you would like any information about the tennis club. METHODIST CHURCH (www.brentknollmethodistchurch.com) Minister Revd. Steve Bennett It goes without saying that, as a church, we are still unable to physically meet together for worship and fellowship during this ongoing crisis. But we are very grateful to Rev Steve for organising regular Sunday morning worship via Zoom. Whilst some of our congregation are joining together via laptops and computers each week, others are using the weekly Order of Service, which Steve has been sending around for private devotion and prayer. We are keeping in regular contact with each other and we are all in agreement that not only do we miss the physical act of being in the same building together, we also miss the fellowship which comes out of that act of being together. Although phone calls, Skype and Zoom have been valuable resources during this time, somehow it's not the same as talking to one another face to face. I was chatting to a member of our church during the week and we both agreed that "we miss hugs". That's one of the cruellest things about this virus. When we could really do with a supportive hug from a dear friend, we are unable to share one as we still need to be utterly mindful of social distancing. But we know that this will end. We don't know when - it may not even be this year - but it will end. And with that in mind, when our churches are able to safely open again, we are beginning to have discussions as to how this could happen. It may well be that our worship will take a different form for a while - but in a world where everything seemed to have been turned upside down virtually overnight, we have to be open to change in a world where the word "normal" no longer seems to apply to so many aspects of our lives. The most important thing is that we stay strong in faith and hope and continue to hold one another in our prayers during this challenging time. To all our friends in the village, and to those outside of it who read this magazine, you are not alone. You are held in our thoughts and our prayers. And for all who feel in need of one at the moment, we are sending you a virtual supportive hug. Stay strong, stay safe and may God continue to bless us all. Rosemary Krull Parish Council Planning Responses We would like to remind local residents that when a planning application comes before the Parish Council, we take into consideration all of the local views about a specific proposal. If you have any concerns, objections to, or support a Planning Proposal, you must register those concerns with the Parish Council prior to the date of its monthly meeting. If you only register your comments on the Planning Portal that may be after our meeting, so timing is critical. We also point out that the Parish Council is a consultee and not the decision maker. The ultimate outcome of any application will come from the Sedgemoor planning team. Please email: the clerk Owen Cullwick [email protected] or call on 07917 445215 Owen Cullwick

(b) In front of the Manor, some gates are to be installed as part of a redirected footpath. This has yet to be completed as we believe the contractor is currently not working during the emergency. He is also due to complete the gates and posts in Battleborough Lane. (c) There appears to be an issue of an overgrown stile on land near the stables in Body’s Lane it needs cutting back (Colin to have a look at what is needed). (d) There appears to be rather insecure plank crossing the Rhyne in Crooked Lane, however this is part of Burnham without Parish and it will be reported to them. (e) The sign behind the church on the Knoll footpath has been defaced with Graffiti. Malcolm has removed the worst, but states that it should come off with a low level solvent. Highways Report The road outside of the hairdressers has become badly damaged; Clerk will report to highways. Village Green/ Toilet Block and Car Park Toilet Block: All seems in good order as very few people are using the facility. Green reported as tidy and no immediate problems to report Play Equipment: It was resolved to approve Paul Dixon’s quote of £116 to repair the Traverse Chain on the Trim Trail. He will also be asked to quote for other recommended improvements. Grants The Chairman re affirmed to the meeting that a payment of £350 to the emergency shop fund had been authorised and that the clerk had secured grants totalling £2000 to support the project. This now means that the Parish Council has secured funding for the shop in total of £2600. News from the Parish Council - continued Further Matters A further matter was raised regarding the path that runs across the field near the Stables in Body’s Lane. Sometime ago, it was proposed to stone and make it easier to navigate this at a cost of about £300, which could be a sensible use of the grant from Nuttall. David Knott agreed to take on this task. A question of liability was raised by Brian Freestone and will be considered by the Council. Also a letter to the owner of the stables to ensure that there is suitable agreement from the landowner. Another path near the railway has been reported as being in a poor state and £200 should be allocated to that job. Parish Council Vacancy Clerk explained the process for filling the vacancy created by the resignation of David Sturgess. A notice will be posted on the boards on 7th May to expire after 14 clear working days and ending 1st June 2020. This will allow anybody wishing to fill this vacancy through an election: however this must be supported by 10 electors. If such an election was held this would not be until May 2021 under current legislation due to the emergency. The quickest way to achieve a replacement would be by co-option, which will be the process once the 14 days has elapsed. Meeting Times The Parish Council’s next virtual meeting on 3rd June 2020, if you wish to attend please contact the Clerk. Minutes of Parish Council meetings are available on the website or by email request to the clerk. Contact the Clerk for any Council matters Owen J Cullwick clerk@rentknollpc.co.uk Moile el Recognise the one who stands beside you ‘Stay alert’ is the message as we ‘ease out of lockdown’. We know that for some there is little ease as we begin to re-engage with a world that is still fearful of Covid-19 and uncertain about its future. The requirement to ‘stay alert’ is to encourage us to watch out for signs of the virus and protect ourselves and others as necessary. We’ve just celebrated Pentecost, often recognised as the birthday of the Church. Jesus’ message to his followers, as he left them to return to his Father, was that they were to ‘stay alert’, not to guard against something fearful to come but rather to be watchful for the Spirit that would free them from fear. It didn’t mean that there weren’t still physical dangers to face but rather that their spiritual lives should grow in boldness. We have seen much courage exhibited throughout this crisis to date. Key workers who have continued to serve us day by day even whilst most of us have remained at home. The NHS has quite rightly been applauded and appreciated at this time and there are so many more. I’ve been especially impressed by our schools and their teams who have largely been open throughout this period to provide care for key worker families and vulnerable children. Even at weekends and during this past half term holiday, they have been tirelessly supporting their local communities. Staying alert to the needs of our young, they have shown their commitment and care. I want to express my huge gratitude to them! As we move into June, we may be seeing more children returning to schools having been home-schooled for a time. This will not be without fear for some and they will need to be especially alert to physical dangers. Whatever the situation we find ourselves to be in at this point, we are reminded that we have a Comforter, an Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who strengthens and encourages our faith even at times of doubt and anxiety. Whether still at home and isolated or beginning a return to wider community life, may you find yourself being alert for and recognising the one who stands alongside you, the Spirit, who is friend, guardian and comforter. With every good wish Bishop Ruth, Bishop of Taunton

Space Update – The Future and Man’s destiny It all started in 1962 when President JF Kennedy gave his famous “We choose to go to the moon” speech and committed, and funded, the newly formed Space Administration (NASA) to “Land a man on the moon and bring him safely back to earth before the decade is out”. It culminated in 1969 Neil Armstrong’s moon landing and his famous words “One small step for (a) man: One giant leap for mankind”. Plans were to start colonies on the moon and Mars, but President Nixon (and others after him) slashed NASA’s budget. Earthly benefits from space include personal computers, Sat Navs in your cars and mobile phones. Apart from constructing the Space shuttle in 1981, sending space probes and rovers to various celestial bodies and launching the Hubble Space Telescope, little was done until 1998 when a joint effort between America, Russia and other countries started the International Space Station. Since then, hundreds of International Astronauts have worked there including our own Major Tim Peake. But the new millennium saw a significant event when two American self-made billionaires, Jeff Bezos (owns Amazon) started “Blue Origin” in 2000 and Elon Musk (owned PayPal) started his Space Exploration company (SpaceX) in 2002. Both agree with the late Stephen Hawking that “man should become a space-faring species” and both want to achieve that within 10 years from now. Both have developed reusable rocket and boosters, which have cut costs of delivering goods to space by 80%. This compares to NASA’s commissioning work on a “cost-plus” basis. So, these selected companies could profit by delaying the work and making it as expensive as possible so as to make more money! Musk won a court case to be able to deliver tons of goods to the ISS at much lower cost and has now done this over 20 times since 2012 using his Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon capsule. SpaceX has worked closely with NASA and has met their exacting safety standards and on 27th May at 8:32 PM GMT, will deliver two NASA astronauts to the ISS. After the Space Shuttle was retired in 2011, this has been done by Russian rockets, at great cost. Now it will again be done by American rockets from American soil. In 2017, President Trump directed NASA to return to the moon by 2024, this time to stay, but asked why we should not go to Mars direct as proposed by Robert Zubrin in his book “The Case for Mars”, which I have just read. This is also Elon Musk’s objective supported by the now 90-year-old veteran astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Mars is a better place than the moon to build a colony for many reasons. It has an atmosphere where the moon has none: It has a 24-hour day not 14 days: It has 4 seasons not none: it has all the chemical elements, its gravity is nearer to Earth’s gravity than the moon and there is no abrasive Moon Dust to damage machinery and penetrate spacesuits. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcTZvNLL0-w a film that sets out “The Case for Mars” which I recommend you watch. (It’s easier to see this article via the www.brentknollvillage.org website and click on the link). SpaceX announced last year that it was developing the biggest rocket ever, standing nearly 400 feet tall, 30 feet wide, weighing 5,000 metric tons and capable of delivering 100 tons and 100 persons to the Moon, Mars or anywhere else in the solar system. It has developed Serial Numbers up to 4 at its Boca Chica site in Texas to date and Serial Numbers 5 and 6 are in preparation. One of these is expected to fly to orbit later this year. Space Update – The Future and Man’s destiny - Continued On 30th April, NASA announced that, as part of its Artemis plans for starting a moon colony in 2024, it has awarded about $1B between 3 commercial companies for them to demonstrate to NASA how to deliver humans and goods to the moon. There are 3 different ways. NASA will then assess the options and make its decision. Way 1. (3 stages) The Blue Origin group. Same as 50 years ago. Stage 1: to orbit the moon: Stage 2: The moon lander to the moon surface. Stage 3: A departure module to return to orbit leaving the lander part behind. Way 2. (2 stages) The Dynetics company. Stage 1 to moon orbit. Stage 2: moon lander/departure module combined. Way 3 (1 stage) SpaceX. The Star Ship doesn’t obit the moon. It lands crew and 100-ton cargo direct and then departs. Space X will demonstrate its proposal in 2022 before NASA decides which system is safest and most cost-effective. International Ultra-speed broadband. SpaceX has been delivering 60 satellites at a time in its Star Link project started in 2018 (now over 500). Star Link broadband will be available in North America and Canada in 3 months. When thousands are up, its rollout will be world-wide. You may have seen some satellites crossing the night sky. This is because each has a folded solar array, which in the flat “book” position reflects the sun’s rays to Earth. Later, the array is moved to the “Shark Fin” position, so there is no reflection. Apart from providing a service, Elon Musk expects to make billions of dollars from Star Link in order to fund his ambition to create a Mars civilization. Although NASA’s official goal is to start a colony on the moon by 2024 and then go to Mars, Elon Musk expects to beat NASA to it! He plans to send unmanned Star Ships to Mars in 2022 and then Astronauts in 2024. But don’t be surprised if some are on board the 2022 trip to Mars! Their first tasks are to produce methane and oxygen for the return trip, to make bricks and build accommodation on the surface and to grow food in greenhouses and hydroponic farms. Then to explore. All very ambitious and exciting. The 2020s is a very interesting and innovative decade, in which it’s good to be alive, as human beings begin to explore and to settle into the FINAL FRONTIER. There’s lots of videos on the internet’s YouTube. If you type in “Star Ship SN4”, “SpaceX”, or even “WHATABOUTIT”, you will see a lot of exciting and memorable information. Women’s Society So sorry that we have not been able to meet but also very pleased that we are able to enjoy the beautiful weather and ‘potter’ in our gardens. Were you all able to join in the VE day celebrations? I do hope that you were. Ours were very different from planned but we enjoyed a cream tea with our neighbours - socially distancing ourselves of course. Having spoken to many of you, I appreciate how much you are missing your family, as we are too, but as long as we can avoid the virus, it will be good for all concerned. I never did have nice hands but they are so dry now from the continuous washing! We will have a celebration when we all meet again, hot pot supper with wine. Julie and I send our best wishes to you all. Ann Affordable Homes Coming to Brent Knoll - What To Do Next As you may know, new homes are being built on two parcels of land in Brent Knoll. Both projects will provide additional affordable homes for local people who have a strong connection with the village. It is hoped that construction of the new homes at the junction of Station Road will get underway later this year. Further details to follow. Construction of the attractive new homes on The Orchard site (land adjacent to the A38) continues to progress well. Whilst still subject to change, it seems likely that the seven affordable homes will ready for occupation by early Autumn 2020. This would mean that anyone wanting one of these homes would need to get their bid in in July or August 2020. On offer - 2 x 1 bedroom Flats, 2 x 2 bedroom houses, 2 x 3 bedroom houses and 1 x 4 bedroom house. Sedgemoor District Council will own these properties and they will be available on a rented basis. Allocation of these new homes will be to local people with a housing need, who have the strongest connection with Brent Knoll. The next steps, if you are after one of these affordable homes Step 1: You must be registered on the Homefindersomerset system. You can do this online at www.homefindersomerset.co.uk. Once registered; Step 2: You must make sure your information is up to date and crucially, make sure your application confirms what local connection you have with Brent Knoll. This is very important. Step 3: From late June onwards, you must regularly login into this system to check when you can bid for one of these homes. The advert will make it clear that priority for the new homes is goes to applicants with a connection with the parish of Brent Knoll. Step 4: You must bid for one of these properties (when advertised) to be considered. Key Messages If you are not registered, you cannot bid. You will not be considered for one of these homes, if you do not bid. You can find out more about the allocation system at www.homefindersomerset.co.uk. Brent Knoll House Histories European Heritage Year 1975 W. I. Book – 43 It is, perhaps, interesting that in the 1891 census, Metford Harris had a general farm servant and a domestic servant, but in 1901 no servants are mentioned when William Harris had taken over at Woodbine Farm. Nor were there any in 1911. There were, however, three children in the family in 1911: Bessie Melita, aged 16, Gladys Mable, aged 14 and Ralph George, aged 12. It would seem that William Harris not only continued the farming, but was also interested in producing his own fruit and vegetables. It is recorded that, at the Lympsham and District Horticultural Show, held on a Thursday afternoon, 2nd August 1906, there was a section where only residents of Lympsham, Brent Knoll and East Brent were permitted to enter, in which William Harris won first prize for Potatoes (2 varieties) and Apples (culinary and dessert) and second prize for Onions (spring sown). It is notable that we rarely use those terms for apples anymore; culinary now more commonly being cooking apples and dessert being eating apples. Mind you, this was the first Lympsham show and the number of entries was not huge considering the number of categories. The newspaper report of the time stated, “Speaking of the vegetable classes as a whole, it may be said that they were creditable, taking into consideration the fact that it was a first show and so early in the season.”! It was in 1915 that the next report of anyone in the Harris family appeared in the newspapers and that was to record the wedding of Bessie Melita Harris. The announcement stated that the wedding took place in the church at Brent Knoll and was between Frederick William Collings, eldest son of George Collings of Lower Farm, Lympsham, and Bessie Melita Harris of Woodbine Farm in Brent Knoll. There was no mention of her father, though. It also said that “the ceremony…was of a quiet character,” and did note that the bride was given away by her father, though, once again, without mentioning his name. Of course, the fact that the wedding was of a quiet character may well have had something to do with the fact that it took place during the First World War. A rather different and rather odd story was reported in a number of local papers on the 25th of February 1916. William Harris, of Woodbine Farm, Brent Knoll, was charged with “having, on February 13th, at Brent Knoll, stolen a quantity of hay, the property of Charles Henry Lane.” The case was held before five magistrates, Mr. A. G. Pitts (in the chair), Major Herepath, Mr. C. E. Pierson, Mr. A. E. Fisher and Mr. W. Carp, at the Highbridge Petty Sessions. Mr. F. W. Bishop, of , prosecuted, and Mr. F. E. Weatherley, barrister, (instructed by Mr. W. H. C. Stiling, solicitor, of Burnham) defended.” That does seem quite a lot of magistrates sitting together for what is described as a Petty Sessions. The report continued, “Mrs Fanny Lane, wife of the prosecutor, said her husband occupied premises at Brent Knoll belonging to the defendant. On those premises they had cow-houses and other places for keeping stock, & etc. Her husband had been in the habit of keeping hay, which he brought from day to day, in the cow house, under cover. Prior to February 13th her husband had been missing hay and in consequence from time to time she kept a lookout. Continued on page 20

Brent Knoll House Histories – Continued On the morning of Sunday, the 13th inst., she saw defendant go into her husband’s cowshed and she saw him shortly afterwards coming out with some hay under his arm. She called out “Mr. Harris,” but he took no notice. He rushed to the calf-pens and gave the hay to his calves. Witness went to the defendant and inquired, “Why do you take our hay to feed your calves?” He replied, “I did not.” Witness said, “You did and I have been watching you for nearly a quarter of an hour.” To that he made no reply. She made a communication to her husband, who came out and asked defendant what he meant by taking his hay. Defendant denied taking the hay.” It then noted that, “Defendant elected to be dealt with summarily and pleaded not guilty,” before giving his side of the story in brief, “Defendant, sworn, said it was untrue that he took any hay from Lane’s cowshed. He was in the habit of taking hay to the calves every day. After he had watched the calves a little while Mrs Lane came up and accused him of stealing the hay. He told her she was a liar if she said he had stolen the hay. “Mr. William Stiling, auctioneer of Bridgwater, said he had known the defendant all his life and had never known anything against his honesty and respectability.” In fact, fourteen years earlier there was an advertisement on the front page of the local paper which noted that a sale would take place on Monday 24th March 1902 at Woodbine Farm, which would be conducted by William Stiling. Various items owned by William Harris were to be auctioned, including 3 Dairy cows, 4 Heifers, 2 Ponies, Implements, Dairy Utensils and 27 acres of grass which were up for sale. I am sorry about the sexist bit in the following comments, but it does provide a possible motive for the accusation, if indeed it was false. “Mr Weatherly, addressing the bench at some length, said that he who endeavoured to pry into the workings of a woman’s mind embarked upon a difficult career, but this much was clear, that both Mr. and Mrs. Lane desired to get rid of the holding. Perhaps, therefore, when something did occur which she thought suspicious she was betrayed into thinking that Mr. Harris was stealing something, which, in fact, he was not. He asked the bench to say that it was Mrs. Lane who started the charge and that her husband had only backed her up in it. Was it safe or fair to convict a man with such a record?” Even if they did desire to get rid of the holding, this seems a rather odd way of going about it; could they not have just told William Harris that they didn’t wish to continue? Unless they had a lease which they no longer wished to honour, perhaps. So, what was the result? “After the bench had deliberated in private, the chairman said the magistrates had thoroughly considered the case and had come to the decision that the evidence was not sufficiently strong for them to register a conviction. The case would, therefore, be dismissed.” What this case does prove is that William Harris, as an essential farmer, did not have to fight in the First World War. In fact, he continued farming at Woodbine Farm until some time after the war. Although it is more difficult to track such things without the census records, it appears that it was sometime between 1919 and 1923 that William gave up farming and his son Ralph took over. WELCOME BACK!! The Red Cow has now reopened and the Ostler family would like to welcome people back to our family run pub in the village. We understand that times have been tough for everyone in one way or another. For us, we are celebrating 40 years at the Red Cow this year and are determined that Covid-19 will not be what brings us to an end. So after much careful planning we are delighted to be able to offer you a takeaway service with a collection or delivery option. We can deliver to anyone in the local community, especially to those who are self- isolating and would like to reassure people that we have put social distancing measures in place inside the pub, which includes hand sanitizers, to make it as safe as possible for those who can collect. It will be so lovely to see you all again and our hope is that you stay safe and well. Please give us a ring and we’ll see what we can do for you. Tel: 01278 760234. Looking up and down at my uniform, she asked, “Are you a cop?” “Yes,” I answered and continued writing the report. “My Mum said if I ever needed help, I should ask the police. Is that right?” she ventured. “Yes, that’s right,” I told her, and added expansively: “We are always here for you.” The little girl looked reassured. “Well then,” she said, as she extended her foot toward me, “would you please tie my shoe?” Sonja Moore

Launch Day was a Hit for Emergency Shop and for the Queue Outside! “Moment of the Day” was a 100th birthday card! Day one for Brent Knoll’s new Emergency Shop was a great success, from start to finish on Saturday (18th April). The start was heralded by local MP, James Heappey, over a live-streamed video link to his home, where his two children helped him to do a ribbon-cutting to declare the shop open for business. The event was watched by villagers waiting outside for the shop to open. The finish, just two hours later, revealed that about £300 had been spent in that brief time by a succession of villagers who used their wait in the queue outside for a catch- up chat with fellow residents. “From start to finish, we were all thrilled with how our first day went”, said David Sturgess, a member of the project’s steering group. “In particular, it was uplifting to see how - despite the strict distancing rules, and rain showers - the many people who came were so obviously enjoying the opportunity for a gossip and a joke while waiting patiently in a good natured queue”, he added. For their opening day, the team had stocked the shop with all the most needed items, from fruit and vegetables to milk, flour, and fresh bread. They were also able to start the process of taking orders for newspapers and bread. “While our volunteers will be refilling the shelves, they’re especially keen to get pre- orders for newspapers and many of the perishable food items, so as to minimise any wastage”, said David. To that end, the team plans to produce and distribute a price list for customers to submit orders, whether in the shop or by ‘phone or email. “The most special moment of the day, perhaps, was when a customer asked whether we might have a 100th birthday card. Among the items of stock from the former shop was a 100th birthday card, so we had a surprised and happy customer – thanks to the continued help we’re getting from Caroline Chennells, the shop owner”, David Sturgess explained. Meanwhile, a video recording of the opening event can still be viewed on the Emergency Shop’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/BrentKnollEmergencyCommunityShop/. The Future of the Emergency Shop The emergency shop’s steering group will review the future of the shop every month, based on support from volunteers and customers, and Government rules on the Covid- 19 crisis. For the moment, the shop will remain in place until 17th May. Thereafter, the Steering Group could decide to close the shop or amend opening hours. “Right now, our first fortnight has been a huge success,” said Mr Mathews. “So, if this continues – with equal levels of enjoyment for both our volunteers and our customers – we’ll have every reason to keep running”, he added. “It’s a simple fact that the success of this Emergency Shop is entirely down to the support of our suppliers, our volunteers, and our customers. We need all three to continue if we are able to keep this shop going”, said Mr Mathews. David Sturgess

Dear Friends, As last month, by the time you read this I have no idea how the Covid-19 situation will have evolved. So, I have decided to avoid the topic and write about something different. The church family life has gone on... How well do you put names to faces? I’m not very good at it. There are several famous Bible stories when people failed to recognise Jesus. On Easter morning we read about tearful Mary Magdalene. She thought Jesus was a gardener, until he spoke her name (if you don’t know the story look it up – John 20:11-18). And then we went on to read about the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, failing to see who it was as Jesus walked with them, even as He told them stories all about himself. It was only when he broke bread, as he had done before, that they saw who it really was (Luke 24:13-35). Then there is another well-known passage in the Bible when Jesus asks, “Who do people say I am?” The disciples reply, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets”. But Peter has the confidence, when asked, “...but who do YOU say I am?” to reply, “You are The Messiah.” (Mark 8:27-30). By saying this, Peter was confirming Jesus was The Son of God and Saviour of the World. It’s a special moment. There are many people in the world today who do not recognise Jesus for what He is. Many people would say he was a “a very good man” or “a charismatic preacher”, perhaps “a miracle worker” or “clever healer”. Others might actually say, “he was a con- man”. What would you say if you were asked, “Who is Jesus?” If He is The Son of God, then it is really important to follow Him and what He says, as He can provide reconciliation and hope for the world. He has the power and authority to be our Saviour. If He is not The Son of God, if He was a charlatan and liar, this would mean millions of people through the centuries, whose lives have been changed by Him, have been wrong. I find that hard to believe! While there have been wicked things done in Jesus’ name by misguided people, there have been so many good things, life-changing events, which confirm His influence to this day. In my opinion and on centuries of evidence He is more than a good man or clever healer; He is the Son of God and Saviour of the World. Jesus said, “I am The Way, The Truth and The Life” (John 14:6). That surely requires a response from each of us. Have you recognised Jesus for what He really is yet? As with Mary, He is calling you by name. Blessings,

Revd Kevin Wright, Priest-in-Charge, The Parish of Three Saints Can you give me a push? It was a dirty night, pouring with rain, Fred and his wife were just going to bed when the doorbell rings, there’s a chap standing there, ‘can you give us a push mate?’. No says Fred I’m just going to bed. Later on when reading in bed his wife says ‘you know it was a bit much, it might have been you in that situation.” Alright says Fred, so he gets up, dresses and puts on his boots and rain ware and goes out the front door, calls out, ‘you still there?’. Yes comes the reply, ‘Do you still want a push?’. Yes please mate! Where are you then? I’m sitting on the swing in your garden!!!! Alan Castle

David Bolland Videos Last month I mentioned that some of the video recordings of village functions, including Village Fêtes, British Legion Remembrance parades and services, school events, including a Christingle, some Harvest Suppers and local garden parties, which David Bolland had recorded, were to be made available online. I also said that it was possible that a few different recordings could be available in the near future, including the Festival of Poppies and the Queens Jubilee celebrations from June 2002, plus a school production of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat from the year 2000. Not all are quite ready yet, but three extra videos are now available: Brent Knoll celebrates the Golden Jubilee; Installation of the new school bell; and Lest We Forget, The Royal British Legion in Brent Knoll. To make it easier to access these videos, they can all be found on YouTube under the general title of “Brent Knoll People,” which we are using as a generic title for all the videos, so you will be able to check every now and then and catch any new videos that are put up. In fact, if you have any local videos which you may think are of interest to others in our local community, they could be a great addition to the set and we are happy if you utilise that general title. It is good to have these recordings as an addition to our history of the village, but besides enjoying seeing some old friends, you could also do some valuable detective work by noting the names of anyone you recognise. Historical pictures of any kind are so much more valuable if the people in them are recognisable to future generations. There are some people I know in the videos, some are even still living in the village, so should be easily identified, but others are merely faces, unless they can be given specific names. If you can help to identify people in the recordings (yourself when younger or others you knew), please do record the exact time within the recording, which you will see below the screen image (you can pause and replay to make it more exact) and, wherever possible, give some feature(s) which will uniquely identify the named person. Please do let me have a copy, either online at [email protected] or on paper at Myrtle Cottage in Battleborough Lane. Here are a few examples from the video regarding the installation of the new school bell, for instance: It is Wally Rice from Banwell who climbs the ladder between 2:20–3:00 minutes, I believe the other installer of the bell, seen at 2:02 onwards is Brian Saunders, Shirley Endall is the Head Teacher at 3:40-5:00, Vicky Jones is second bell ringer from the left at 5:40 (who are the others Vicky?) The Bishop is the Rt. Revd James Thompson (no time needed as I guess you will recognise who he is) The vicar is Rev. Jeremy Wells (again, fairly obvious). Frances James is leading the procession at 33:40 I even saw a head resembling that of Bob Filmer at 6:47! Are you one of the children? Please do let me know if so. I have downloaded copies of all the recordings and will shortly have another hard copy which will be kept in the Village Archive held at the Parish Hall. Finally, our grateful thanks to Diana for providing the village with this valuable record. Brent Knoll People. Brent Knoll celebrates the Golden Jubilee. PARISH HALL COMMITTEE FORTHCOMING EVENTS for your DIARY 2nd Saturday Bazaar, Farmers’ Market and Parish Café 13th June Village Fête –Cancelled 17th October Harvest Supper – ‘Stop Cocks’ 18th July ‘Six Machine’ on the Green Next meeting – Monday, 8th June at 8pm online via Zoom! S Few Nature Diary – June This is my second diary during Lockdown. Rosemary and I are continuing to walk regularly over Brent Knoll. We must confess to sneaking a thermos flask and a little bit of refreshment into our rucksack and lingering on the top for slightly longer than permitted. The cowslips have flowered in profusion this year with hundreds of blooms showing at the same time. We have noticed a couple of false oxlips this year. This is the hybrid between the cowslip and primrose, and usually has flowers that are like small primroses on long stems. What they don’t do is droop like the normal cowslip. The two plants we have seen have been of different colours, one primrose and the other coloured like a cowslip. We have also seen significant numbers of wall butterflies, which are relatively scarce nowadays. My experience is that these butterflies are very local and will only be seen along the south rampart of the Knoll. I was therefore quite excited to see a wall butterfly on the Middle Street railway bridge, a new location for me. On the weekend of semi-lockdown, there were scores of people at the top of the Knoll. Fortunately we now only meet small family groups and couples taking their quota of exercise. Unfortunately, someone has taken the opportunity of the relative solitude to spray the Jubilee cairn with blue paint. It is quite disfiguring and will require to be removed at some stage. What a pity! With thoughts of our recent Easter celebrations in mind, I thought that I would include some references to Christian religion in this Diary. In the middle ages the Church dominated our social life and this spilled over into our relationship with the natural world. I will mention three names that have survived into the present day. St Mark’s Day is 25th April and you may be familiar with a black fly that emerges around that time. It is a rather ungainly creature that trails its legs when it flies. It wanders around aimlessly a few feet above the ground, sometimes in large numbers. I find it irritating because it tends to fly straight into your face, and often entangles itself in your hair. The second is a tree with beautiful pinkish mauve flowers that flowers on bare stems just as the leaves are beginning to open in April. This is the Judas Tree, so called because legend has it that, after he betrayed Jesus, Judas was thought to have hanged himself on this tree. The largest and most beautiful Judas Tree in Brent Knoll is in the garden of Ball Copse Hall. The third plant is Calvary Clover, which is plant of Mediterranean origin. It is a medick with small yellow flowers and a small dark blotch on its leaves. These are said to represent the blood of Christ. It is a common weed around Brent Knoll and is particularly common in St Michael’s churchyard. Finally, spring is not complete without a cuckoo, but my experience is that they are not often heard around Brent Knoll. To my delight I heard one singing loud and clear on the slopes of the Knoll on 27th April. Ged

Save money on Household Bills My name is Gerry Rushton, I have lived in Burton Row, Brent Knoll for around 20 years, having moved from Bristol to be with my Partner Jacs Gilpin. I am a full time DJ, specialising in Weddings, Anniversaries and Parties (you might have seen my little smart car with the flames on). On paper, 2020 was going to be my busiest year. That was until Covid-19 happened, which as you can imagine, completely destroyed all the great parties, and my income. My partners Hair and nail business in Bridgwater also closed with total loss of income. We found ourselves in total lockdown with no income from our normal activities. Fortunately, alongside my DJ Business I have also been running a part time business completely from home and this is going really well. This has proved to be my saviour. I am a partner with a FTSE 250 British company based on the Edgware Rd in London. We simply show people how to save money on all those boring household bills for those essential services we all need. Home phone, broadband, gas, electric, mobile phone, house insurance and save money on shopping too. All on One Direct Debit...... We even supply and fit LED Bulbs for FREE to qualifying customers. So Saving Money is one side of our business. Making Money from the safety of your own home is the other side. I am currently looking for people to join my Team. Part Time, Full Time, Anytime the choice is yours. I am turning this Covid-19 Horrible situation into a Positive step forward. I am happy to help you make money, save money, or both. If you are interested contact me. Gerry Rushton on 07803745365 or [email protected] PARISH HALL AGM The Parish Hall held its AGM on Monday 11th May. According to the current rules on social distancing, the meeting was held via Zoom. Bob Filmer reported on the fundraising events that had taken place during 2019/2020 and included the maintenance work that had been carried out during that period including replacing the flooring in both the Kitchen and Nuttall Room and redecorating the outside of the hall and the main hall (now named the Harris Room) and purchasing and installing a new heater serving the Harris Room and Toilets. John Page presented the accounts and reported that the Hall had again covered its basic running costs from hiring charges. He thanked John Harris and the Wassail for their donation and also Somerset Community Foundation for their grant towards the replacement heating boiler. He also reported that following the introduction of LED lighting in the hall the previous year, electricity charges had dropped by 30%!. Due to careful management and fundraising efforts, the Hall was in a position to ride out the current situation, whereby, for the foreseeable future, there would not be any revenue coming in. The present members of the Parish Hall Committee were re-elected to serve on the committee for another year. The meeting concluded that the Committee would recommence fundraising events once the pandemic is over. Sandra Few

In view of the continued lockdown, I thought I would show our village’s patriotism with some of our National Flags. I did our Union Flag and my friend Klaus did St Andrew’s. They are easy but we hope you enjoy them. Last month’s NHS Sudokus were popular and a record 19 correct solutions were received. In addition, I know some others do them but don’t send them in. Comments were: “Had fun doing this one!” – “Fun with a cup of coffee in the sun”– “enjoyed them and found they didn’t tax the “little grey cells“ too much,” – “Enjoyed these whilst sat in the sun!” – “Many thanks for these”. Solutions came from: - Klaus Brenner, Jenny Butters, Pauline Chadwick, Tim Cromwell, Peter Filmer, Christine Hall, Mac Hares, John Harper, Arndt Hartmann, Liz Ibrahim, Vicky Jones, Chris Marsh, Frankie and Geoff New, Chloe Ostroff, John Spiers, Ted Toon, Jo Wright and Louise Wright. V.E. Day Celebrations It must be about eight weeks since we started this “shut down”. I can’t understand why, but the weeks just fly by. Trouble is we never seem to know what day it is, and even more confusing when the bin men came on a different day, incidentally, I do think the bin men and the others who collect the recycling are doing a grand job. Thank you. I would like to say a big “Thank You” to Bob and David for continuing the Brent Knoll News and delivering it. We had a really good afternoon on Friday the eighth. Quite a group “up our end”, had our tea parties in our driveways or on the pavement. Some people really went to town, best china, tea cups and saucers, someone else had a lovely old cake stand. Afraid we only had mugs and egg sandwiches! Peter Osborn played loudly Glen Miller and others, he also played a great part in our weekly clapping, cycling up and down ringing a bell and winding something up, a bit like a siren! The village looked very patriotic dressed in red, white and blue. The flag Frances James hung out, was the same one which flew on VE Day 1945 and maybe even before that, on special occasions. Hopefully, soon we shall be able to meet for a chat in our gardens, with tea or coffee, or maybe something a little stronger! Of course, keeping to a small group with space between. Keep Safe. SW We saw the posters asking people to celebrate VE Day last Friday, so we put up the bunting and had a bit of a party on our drive, playing Vera Lynn and Glenn Miller songs and having some trifle and of course the very British G & T. Unfortunately no one around us came out although the houses were decked with flags and bunting, so we just danced to moonlight serenade, waved to a few cyclists and walkers and then went in. Being opposite the Parish hall we are used to noise from the Hall and the Village Green, especially when there is something so important to celebrate so it was eerily quiet. Above is a photo to commemorate the moment. Anita & Rob

Postcards of rent Knoll Last year I was giving a talk to the Local History group in Pill. After the meeting, a couple met me in the car park and told me that a local resident, Michael Tozer, had just died. It turned out that Michael had been a voracious collector of postcards and not only had a huge collection from his local area, but also included quite a few from rather more distant places. Many of these, I was informed, were from the area covered by the King John’s Hunting Lodge Museum in Axbridge. The museum’s area of interest includes all those villages which were originally part of the Axbridge Rural District Council (ARDC), except for those which have been taken over by the North Somerset Council (although the museum does still have a number of items which were acquired prior to the loss of the ARDC). They then asked me if I was interested in acquiring them for the museum, which, of course, I was. A few weeks later two shoe boxes full of postcards arrived. One was exclusively about Cheddar, the other contained postcards from about thirty differing villages, a few from outside this area, but mostly from villages in this locality.

Amongst this collection were just over fifty postcards of Brent Knoll, some of which are reasonably well-known postcards, but most have points of interest which I thought may be of general interest. So, over the next few months I will be including some each month in the BKN, starting with this one which shows a country lane I suspect everyone will immediately recognise. There are quite a few pictures of Church Lane and I will include some others later, where they have interesting features. In this one it is interesting to see how much the lane has changed. The house on the left was demolished some time ago, but it is also nice to see the people who were captured by the photographer. Can anyone name them? The postcard does not have a date on it, unfortunately, but is obviously quite old. On the reverse it says that it was produced by Williams, The Stores, Brent Knoll. Was this John Williams, who had a listing in Kelly’s directories up until 1910 as a wholesale and retail ironmonger. If so, this postcard must be well over 100 years old. John Page

To be, all at sixes and sevens; means to be in such a state of disorder that a task could not be completed effectively. This wonderful old phrase is still very much used today. The origin of this saying goes way back to 1327 when, two great livery companies, “The Skinners and The Merchant Taylors,” each received their charter within a few days of each other. An argument ensued, as to which of the two firms was to be placed at no 6 and 7 of companies going on processions in the City of London. It seemed to have been resolved when the suggestion was made for them to swop places each year. This went on up to1484, when both Masters submitted the matter to the then Lord Mayor of London, Sir Robert Billesden. Rather than getting bogged down with all the rights and wrongs, the Mayor ruled the companies should continue as before, with the addition, that both companies should entertain each other to dinner once a year and continue to alternate their place in the processions. How typically English! More next time, Roger Ward

You can view it here: https://tinyurl.com/ybu8d8bf It has been wonderful to be part of the brilliant community support that has been carried out by local parishes, churches and volunteers to keep our most vulnerable fed and in receipt of their prescriptions. We should remember them in our regular Thursday evening applause. We have really missed seeing our clients at our Taking Cafés, so it felt right to reopen them in a virtual sense. The Talking Cafés have gone live on Facebook in May with Sedgemoor hosting every Thursday at 11am. Anyone can watch or join in the conversation or ask a question during the live video in the comments section and have your answer there and then. There was quite a long pause on the other end of the phone, followed by a sigh of wakening understanding. “Well, now … so that’s why no one was at church today.” Sonja Moore

Getting to know someone in the village The Covid-19 situation has forced all of us to make changes to our daily lives, and probably meet people from the village we did not know before. I have had the pleasure of getting to know the people who are now running the emergency shop, in particular John Matthews. Over the past month we have discovered that we both have a love for Spain and we both worked for large American companies in London. I really wanted to know why he wanted to get involved with a Community Shop project. C: What made you want to get involved with the community project? J: As I drove past the shop on my way to work, I would see people coming or going to the shop, and I thought what a shame it would be to loose such an important resource. C: What did you do pre-lockdown and what is the thing you miss the most? J: I was a field-based sales and marketing manager, which involved a lot of driving – something I really don’t miss! But I do miss the face to face interaction with customers, and the buzz of completing a deal you have worked hard on. C: What and where would be your best family holiday destination? J: Tamariu, Costa Brava, Spain. We have been going for many years, but last year we went to Kefalonia in Greece. Both the Spanish and the Greeks are fantastically welcoming to children. C: Where would you take Kate for the ultimate night or day out? J: Kate and I are very different, so I would choose a night of live comedy. Kate would choose a meal, probably il Giardino in Clevedon followed by Lionel Ritchie in concert. John then suggested he ask me some questions, so we swapped roles. J: How did you end up living in Brent Knoll? C: I was looking to buy a village shop to escape from London. I wanted to spend more time with my children as they grew up. Brent Knoll ticked all the right boxes. J: Ever met anybody Famous? Tell us the story… C: I went to a Boomtown Rats concert when I was about 16 and we had backstage passes and I bumped into Bob Geldof who signed my arm. J: What is your favourite holiday destinations? C: Not sure I have a favourite, but these are some that really stick in my memory. Machu Picchu: as a tour leader I walked the Inca trail about 10 times, the trail and the sight of Machu Picchu never lost its magic. The Galapagos Islands; Granada and the Alhambra and any beach in the world at sunset. J: Recommend a book I must read C: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini This is just a glimpse of our conversations, which have been very varied. We have realised that we share more than an involvement with the shop. A village is only as good as the people who live in it, and over my years of living here I have met a wide range of fascinating people, so I challenge you to talk to your neighbours, or anyone you may meet while out on your daily walk. Should anyone wish to be the next volunteer to be interviewed please contact me via email: [email protected]. BRENT KNOLL VILLAGE SCARECROW WEEKEND th th 19 & 20 September 2020

THE THEME IS ANNOUNCED...... THE THEME IS ANNOUNCED...... THE THEME IS ANNOUNCED.... DIARYS OUT EVERYONE!!! POP THESE DATES IN AND GET YOUR THINKING CAPS ON!!! 2020 has certainly given us some challenges and we are all having to adjust to a very different way of life for a while. Lots of village events have been cancelled so we decided that as the Scarecrow Weekend is later in the year.... THE SHOW MUST GO ON!!! As a village, let’s all get behind this and make this the best thing to happen in 2020. Making your scarecrow could be a great family project during lockdown. We will, of course, heed advice from the government with regard to social distancing, etc. so we can best organise the event for all to enjoy. The past 8 years, we had an absolutely fantastic response from the village with approximately 60 scarecrows each year, and the atmosphere in the village over the weekend has been fabulous. We would very much appreciate your support and enthusiasm for the event again this year. Our theme this year is

‘‘NUM8ER5”

Think of a film, book, Royalty, TV character/programme, song, band, event, saying or children’s rhyme which includes a number or a numerical reference. Here’s some inspiration; Oceans 11, 007, 3 times a lady, Richard III, One Direction, Catch 22, 12345 Once I caught a fish alive – There are so many to choose from, so start NUM8ER crunching!! and see what you and your family can think of. With the possibility of winning over £125 in prizes as well as supporting our local rainbow, brownie & guide groups, it’s a struggle to find a good reason not to take part in this Scarecrow Trail. And it’s FREE to enter!! So go on, together with your family or group put your thinking caps on; search the house for ideas, reminisce or browse the internet, choose your character and send in your entry form. Note: Entries must be returned to Jane Sinnott no later than Saturday 1st August 2020. Please don’t delay, once you have an idea get your entry in!! We will accept any late entries but would ask that they are brought to the Parish Hall for display as the maps and trail sheets would have already been produced. Newbie to the village or not entered before? This could be your year! Join in the fun! If you have any queries with regard to the arrangements, need ideas or need to know how to make or position your scarecrow please contact the organisers – we will be happy to help! FULL DETAILS AND PHOTOS OF PREVIOUS YEARS ON THE BK SCARECROW WEBSITE http://brentknollscarecrows.weebly.com. Little tip - GET YOUR ENTRY IN AS SOON AS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO DO!! Characters will be reserved on receipt of completed entry forms. If your chosen character has already been reserved, we will contact you on receipt of your application so you can choose an alternative.

PRIZES AND SPONSORS Best Scarecrows chosen by the judges £50 first prize £30 second prize £20 third prize For the Trail Prize £25 prize for one lucky winner We hope everyone in the village will take part in this event by either making their own scarecrow or taking part in the trail. Brent Knoll Scarecrow Trail - Rules and Guidelines The competition and trail will run from the 19th September and 20th September 2020 – 10am – 4pm each day. Scarecrow entries, however, must be in by 1st August 2020. Scarecrows need to be visible each day of the Trail from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Organisations and families entering a scarecrow in the competition should do their best to maintain their scarecrow in good condition throughout the trail. It is recommended that scarecrows in the front of garden of private houses are set back from their front boundary fences to minimize the risk of vandalism. The organisers take no responsibility for any damage to property or scarecrows. If you wish to restrict access to your property, please erect a notice to that effect at the front boundary of your property. (People following the trail are unlikely to pass through gates but may well walk up open driveways.) Commercial premises may wish to display their scarecrow either standing or seated outside during the hours they are open and in the window when closed. The organisers will provide a laminated A4 poster that must be displayed with your scarecrow. The organisers will take photographs of all the registered scarecrows during the two days of the Trail. Registration of a scarecrow permits the trail organizers to use these photographs for publicity purposes. The first prize for the best scarecrow is £50, the second prize is £30 and the third prize is £20. The prize for the completed trail sheets (drawn from a hat if more than one correct entry) is £25. All prizes are accompanied by a certificate and decided by a panel of judges chosen by the organisers. The judge’s decision will be final and there can be no dispute. The prize winners will be announced in the Parish Hall on Saturday 20th September at 3pm. The theme this year is “NUM8ER5”. Characters will be reserved on receipt of completed entry forms. If your chosen character has already been reserved we will contact you on receipt of your application so you can choose an alternative. All scarecrows should be approximately one and a half to two metres tall and props may be used. Thought should be given to how well materials used might weather during the weekend. See the simple scarecrow-building guide for some helpful hints on the Scarecrow website. Entry is open to any household in Brent Knoll village and any organisations or businesses in the village. This year we will welcome entries to anyone living outside of the village but who have a connection with the village (work or attend a club in the village, children attend Brent Knoll School, Tadpoles pre-School, Guides, Brownies or Rainbows) If you need a location to display your scarecrows, please contact the organisers for details on display locations. Completed entry forms must be submitted no later than 1st August 2020. Priority will be given to early applicants should we have to limit the numbers. If you have any further questions please text Jane Sinnott on 07929939270 or email: [email protected]. Website for further information: http://brentknollscarecrows.weebly.com
