Sicilia in MG - La Targa Florio After the last reconnaissance trip to Sicily the programme has now been finalized. The second half of June has been chosen for the event. This may seem the beginning of the summer, but considering the climate of Sicily this is really full summer there. We will be able to fully enjoy the sea and the beach. Much time in the programme is going to be dedicated to those elements and we will stay four nights each at two hotels directly on the seaside. The first near Cefalù and the second near Marina Ragusa and near the locations (Scicli, Punta Secca…) where the Commissario Montalbano movies were produced. We will obviously visit these locations. There will be the possibility to depart from two different ports with modern and comfortable ferries “Grandi Navi Veloci” www.gnv.it: Genoa for those who arrive from northern Italy and abroad and Naples for the participants arriving from central and southern Italy. Having in mind the success of the pre-meeting that Wim Jetten organized in 2013 prior to the Sardinia event there are plans to organize a similar pre-meeting next year. Whoever is interested may participate in a pre- meeting in Umbria organized by Piero Fusaroli, starting from Saturday June 13 2015. Of course one may start to participate in the pre-meeting any day between the Saturday the 13th and Thursday the 18th of June, the day of departure to Sicily. In this way particularly foreign participants can benefit to maximum extent of their long journey to Italy and enjoy the unique cultural and scenic beauty of this area.

Dear Friends of Meredith Travel, I just spent a most enjoyable morning. In preparation for writing this letter about our September 25-October 7, 2018, tour of Sicily, I reviewed my photographs from the trip I made there this past summer. I simply can’t wait to go back! Betty describes southern Italy as Italy to the 3rd power—older, grander, and more richly complex. Sicily, we agree, is Italy to the 10th power, at least. It was, by far, the most exotic version of our favorite country that I have yet to encounter, made so by its location and history, which includes a dizzying mix of cultures. It was Greek far longer than it has been Italian. It was Arab. Norman. Swabian. Aragonese. Austrian. Even Bourbon French! All left their mark. And finally, and relatively recently (1860), the Risorgimento fought it into being part of unified Italy. The food, the architecture, and customs can best be understood by experiencing them all firsthand, so without further ado, I would like to summarize our itinerary for you. Join me now as we vicariously tour Sicily together. Day 1: Sept. 25 (Tues) Departure. We depart the U.S. to arrive the next day in Palermo, the capital of the autonomous region of Sicily. Day 2: Sept. 26 (Wed) Palermo. Palermo is a city of 700,000, by far the largest on the island, with an ancient historic city center with structures representing the panorama of its past. After a quick driving tour to orient us to the city, we stop, drop bags at the hotel, and head out to see perhaps the most perfect medieval buildings in the world, the Norman Palace and Palatine Chapel, the latter known for its extraordinary mosaics designed in such a way that the aesthetics of the Arab, Jewish, and Norman artisans are all incorporated.

Grasso2 1Department of Political Studies, University of Catania, Italy 2Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Catania, Italy Abstract Eastern Sicily (Italy) is one of the areas at highest seismic risk in Europe, and its long history (2700 years from the Greek settlements to the present) enables scientists to access a vast amount of data related to geophysical and geotechnical characteristics, both complex and diverse relationships that are established over time between the disaster and the human communities that will suffer. The recognition of change, or the lack of change, that repeated catastrophic events in an area makes to the culture (science, technical, religious, administrative) and the attitudes of groups of people who remain, are the basic elements for building a complex model to understand the catastrophic phenomenon, which combine different disciplines and specializations, in order to compare experiences in different areas and at different times. The methodological problem, of which scientists who collaborate on the study of disasters have long been aware, is to connect the earthquake with the historical and anthropological understanding of the earthquake, to develop a “culture of earthquakes” that operates in the direction of the scientific organization of cities and housing in seismic features. The aim of this paper is to highlight some of these “elements” through the observation of historical earthquakes in south-eastern Sicily, and particularly in Catania during the catastrophic events of 9 and 11 January 1693, with the goal of providing a key to the cultural and social situations that are also present.
