She is a talented and dedicated professional who has agreed to manage all of the publication as- pects of our fine journal into the future. She works with her hus- band, Board Member Dr. David Fanning, at Kolbe and Fanning Numismatic Literature. Her position in the numismatic literature community makes her uniquely qualified for her new role, and the Officers and Board of NBS are grateful for her service. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our previ- ous Editor, David Yoon, for his long tenure at The Asylum. The publication continuously improved under his leadership, and the quality of The Asylum is due in large part to his efforts. He has been involved with Maria during the transition of roles, and for that, and his service to NBS and the literature community over the years, we are also very grateful. This is an exciting time to be involved in numismatic litera- ture. With the rapid improvement of technology in publishing and archiving, many important works that previously would have been lost, are being preserved for future generations of collectors. Most of you are interested in building and improving your own libraries. The Numismatic Bibliomania Society continues to be the best resource for information in our field. Many of you may know me through my work at Kolbe & Fanning Numismatic Booksellers and have met me at the ANA’s World’s Maria Fanning, Fair of Money, the New York International Numismatic Conven- The Asylum Editor tion or through email correspondence. I am pleased to be suc- ceeding David Yoon, who has continued to produce an impres- sive publication for the past nine years. He has graciously offered his support and assistance in my first few issues and I thank him for leaving me with a vibrant journal. I know we all wish him the best for the future, be it in numismatics or archeology! The Asylum has a long history of being a hub of research and discussion for those serious about their love of numismatics. I hope to draw on that passion to include even more contributions from those we have not yet heard, as well as our excellent regular contributors. There is plenty of room for those with a scholarly bent as well as inexperienced writers with a passion for numis- matic books and we want to hear about yours. We have some fascinating articles in this issue. We are very lucky to have an article by P. Scott Rubin on his 19th-century auc- tion catalogues, which we hope will become an ongoing series. We also have a spicy tale of love and murder written by no other than famed Mint Director William E. Dubois and brought to light by our own Joel Orosz. David Fanning shares another of his award-winning “Off The Shelf” columns, this one on Newcomb’s book on 1801-03 cents, and Len Augsberger gives us an exciting update on what’s happening with the Newman Portal. And in addition it may not be out of place here to state that Courts of Justice, in what is now the Com- monwealth of Pennsylvania, were first established by the Swedes, in 1642, at New Gottenburg, nowTinicum, by Governor John Printz, who was instructed to decide all controversies according to the laws, customs and usages of Sweden. What Courts he established and what the modes of procedure therein, can only be conjectur- ed by what subsequently occurred, and by the record of Upland Court.

DuBois was born in Philadelphia in 1880 and was the second son of William L. and Mary (Cowell) DuBois. Henry became the steward of a small cache of family history and papers, some of which date to the Revolutionary War. The collection includes miscellaneous correspondence and documents pertaining to several generations of the Patterson, Ewing, Cowell, and DuBois family, as well as a published family history, genealogical notes, and photographs. Background note Henry C. DuBois (b. 1880), was the second son born to William L. DuBois and Mary (Cowell) DuBois. On his father’s side, Henry was descended from Louis DuBois, a French Huguenot who immigrated to America in approximately 1660, and Robert Patterson (1743-1824), the Irish-born Revolutionary War hero and distinguished professor of mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania. Uriah DuBois, the great-great grandson of Louis DuBois, was born in 1768 in New Jersey. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1790, where he studied with Professor Robert Patterson. In 1798, Uriah married Patterson’s daughter, Martha.

    Early United States Copper Coinage: the English Connection

    EARLY UNITED STATES COPPER COINAGE: THE ENGLISH CONNECTION R. G. DOTY THE cent has traditionally been regarded as the most distinctly 'American" coin. It was the first denomination to be struck for circulation at the national Mint in Philadelphia. It is the only American coin whose production virtually mirrors the history of the Mint itself: struck every year save one from 1793 to the present, the denomination's abundance or scarcity, its being held in high repute or scornful disdain, bear witness to the shifting fortunes of the United States Mint itself, presenting a view matched by no other denomination in American history. In many ways, the one cent piece is the story of the federal coinage. But first appearances can be deceptive. If the cent was meant to be, in part, a reflection of a new national pride and sovereignty (and coinage is always a reflection of autonomy, whether so intended or not), the first federal copper coinage mirrored the flaws in that sovereignty, the tentative nature of its status, along with the optimistic patriotism inherent in possessing money of one's own. For the new cents (and half-cents) might well have been struck in America, incorporating new and deliberately non-European designs; but the planchets which were the vehicles for the new nationalism were purchased from the former mother country and sometime enemy. Put most simply, every cent and half-cent struck at Philadelphia between 1796 and 1837 was very likely to have begun its career in England. And the odds were overwhelmingly in favour of its having come from a single firm, the industrial complex owned by Matthew Boulton and James Watt, located at Soho, near Birmingham.

Portraits in the University of Pennsylvania Abstract This volume includes descriptions of the two hundred and sixty-seven portraits in oil and pastel owned by the University of Pennsylvania, of which one hundred and two are here illustrated. Portrait statues, busts, and medallions, pen-and-ink, charcoal, and pencil drawings have been omitted. The ubjs ects are arranged chronologically by date of birth. At the end of the brief biographies, the measurements of the portraits are given in inches, height by width, together with the name of the artist where available, and the location of the portraits in the University buildings. Numerals provide cross references to the biographies and illustrations. Where there is more than one portrait of a subject an asterisk (*) in the descriptive details indicates which is illustrated.
