  • Unearthing Mesoamerican Antiquity in the Art of the United States, 1839-1893
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE OLD NEW WORLD: UNEARTHING MESOAMERICAN ANTIQUITY IN THE ART OF THE UNITED STATES, 1839-1893 Angela Susan George, Doctor of Philosophy, 2011 Dissertation directed by: Professor Sally M. Promey Department of Art History and Archaeology Through a series of case studies, this dissertation examines how and why artists in the United States imagined Mesoamerican antiquity between 1839 and 1893. The artists whose work I consider most closely include Frederick Catherwood, Peter F. Rothermel, Emanuel Leutze, George Martin Ottinger, and George de Forest Brush; works by other artists play supporting roles or amplify the observations made in this project. The decades in which I situate my study were key in the development of the United States’ geographic borders and national identity as well as in the foundation of archaeological investigation in Mesoamerica. During the period under question, ancient Mesoamerica provided a “usable past” for many in the United States. Since little was known of the pre-Hispanic cultures of the region, Mesoamerican antiquity served as a palimpsest upon which a number of narratives could be written. As this dissertation reveals, ancient Mesoamerica resonated differently with various individuals and groups in the United States. The Mesoamerica that existed in the U.S. imagination was at once savage, exotic, advanced, and primitive, inhabited by a population assigned a similarly disparate and ultimately contradictory range of traits. Representations of Mesoamerica were not fixed but eminently variable, shaped to serve the exigencies of many historical moments. As such, these images reveal as much about the nineteenth-century United States as they do about the people and places depicted.

Yet, women have been noticeably absent from the historical record of the RCMP, allowing the figure of the heroic male Mountie to continue his dominance in official, academic, and popular histories. Central to these discourses has been the male police body which has been positioned as the only body capable of enforcing the law in Canada.

Lesson 6 Moses Speaks With God Introduction to the Book of Moses Moses 1:1-23 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:9 Presentation by ©http://fashionsbylynda.com/blog/ Moses He was born (c. 1370 B.C.) the son of Amram and Jochebed, who were Levites (Israelite—a covenant people). He had a brother, Aaron (who was the spokesman for him), and a sister, Miriam He was secretly hid for 3 months because the Pharaoh ordered all new born males to be slain He was found on the Nile River and adopted into the royal Egyptian family by the Pharaoh's daughter, Princess Bithiah, and was raised in the courts by his Hebrew mother. When he was about 40 years old he rejected his place in Pharaoh's household and fled to Midian, near Mt. Sinai, and became a shepherd He married Zipporah, daughter of Reuel (Jethro), and they had two son’s, Gershom and Eliezer. He was given the priesthood through his father-in-law During his 40 years in Midian, the Lord told Moses to lead the captive Israelites away from Egypt to the promised land (the land of Canaan) The journey from Egypt to Mt. Sinai took about 2 months as he prepared them to receive the full priesthood, ordinances, and blessings At Mt Sinai the children of Israel were organized into 12 tribes and the migration was organized into 4 companies and they lived as a desert people for 40 years.

Chapter One {1869-1949} 1869 – “The FIRST College Football game” Princeton vs Rutgers - College Field - New Brunswick, New Jersey {Rutgers 6 Princeton 4} The 1869 New Jersey vs. Rutgers football game was between the College of New Jersey (now the Princeton Tigers) and the Rutgers Queensmen played on November 6, 1869. The game's rules were based on the London Football Association's early set of rules, which had recently become the most popular set of rules for the game of football at the time. The game, along with the schism between the FA's rules and the rules of the Rugby Football Union, set in motion the events which would lead to the development of modern American football during the following decades. LLC Bible, Painting by Arnold Friberg The game is considered to have been the first American football game ever played. The game was played in front of approximately 100 spectators. Rutgers won the game 6–4. The game took place at CollegeFootball Field (now the site of the College Avenue Gymnasium at Rutgers University) in New Brunswick, New Jersey. In what might be considered a beginning to college football rivalries, immediately after Rutgers won this game, Princeton's players were literally run out of town by the winning Rutgers students. The Princeton students reportedly jumped in their carriages and quickly made the 20-mile trip back to their campus. 1911- The Dobie “Bunk Play” Washington at Oregon - Multnomah Field - Portland, Oregon {Washington 29 Oregon 3} Gilmour Dobie was a legendary coach for the University of Washington football team.
