BARBARA STOCK NIELSEN Comptroller General State Superintendent of Education THE HON. RICHARD ECKSTROM THE HON. CHARLES MALONY CONDON State Treasurer Attorney General THE HON. BRIGADIER GEN. STAN SPEARS THE HON. D. LESLIE TINDAL Adjutant General Commissioner of Agriculture Nearly two years ago, when David Beasley started running for Governor, he talked about the need to put families first. It quickly became the theme for his campaign and he is determined to make it the focal point of the Beasley Administration, beginning with this Inauguration. David and Mary Wood Beasley asked children around the state to help by cre ating the official "Putting Families First" logo for inaugural activities. There were literally thousands of entries from all over South Carolina. Each child sent a spe cial message through his or her art. Each child and each family deserves special recognition and a special thank you for participating in the Inaugural. The winning artist is Ryan Bailey, who is a special Inaugural guest today. He is accompanied by his parents Melissa and Greg Bailey and his brother Kevin. They live in Sumter where both boys attend Alice Drive Elementary School. On a day just before Christmas, Melissa Bailey picked her sons up from school and on the way home they saw a green wreath on the door of a church. Ryan and Kevin asked their mom about the significance of a wreath at Christmas. They began talking about the evergreen wreath, how the color stays green no matter what the season and how the circle has no end point. The conversation turned to families and how we all live on no matter what the season ... good times or bad ... through our families. Six year old Kevin- an obvious Lion King fan- jumped up and said "Just like the Circle of Life!" When they got home and Ryan went through his homework packet, he found that Ms. Hoskins, his third grade teacher, had included the Governor-Elect's request for entries in the logo contest. The Baileys made a family project of it. They talked about how all families are different and how children are the very special gifts that families receive, com pleting the circle of life. So that's who Ryan put in his creation ... the children. J~-fiommtittee John S. Rainey, Chairman Fred Allen Mr. & Mrs. David R. Hiott Richard B. Allen Mr. & Mrs. Van D.
