~~~ ~aM~??~Y~c% GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA
Prior to his election as governor, Governor-elect served six years (1994-2000) in the Congress where he represented South Carolina's First Congressional District. While in Washington, Mark was an advocate for the taxpayer. He consistently fought for a smaller and more accountable government. He was recognized by Citizens Against Government Waste and the National Taxpayers Union as number one in the entire Congress in his efforts to limit federal spending and taxes. He mirrored these votes with actions in his own office, returning more than $1.5 million from his office account over his six years. In keeping with his belief in term limits he voluntarily stepped down from Congress to honor a personal commitment to limit his time in Washington.
Prior to serving in Congress, Sanford worked in real estate finance and investment in New York and Charleston. These experiences cemented his belief that too much of what government does hampers a small businessman's ability to build investments and create jobs.
As an Eagle Scout, it is not surprising that his most recent civic involvement has been acting as chairman for the Coastal Council Chapter of the Boy Scouts of America. Mark and his wife Jenny have four young sons, Marshall, Landon, Bolton and Blake.
LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR
At 33 years of age, Andre Bauer, when sworn into office, will become the nation's youngest Lieutenant Governor.
Born in Charleston on March 20, 1969, Bauer was raised in Lexington County where he graduated from Irmo High School. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BS degree in Business.
While in college, Bauer began a small sports souvenir business, which he built into one of the South's largest wholesalers and distributors of collegiate sporting merchandise. In the early '90's, he expanded his business to include real estate and investments.
In 1996, Bauer was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, where he quickly gained a reputation for hard work and tireless constituent service. He was re-elected in 1998 with the largest vote total in the state. Bauer was elected in a 1999 special election to fill a vacancy in the South Carolina State Senate with a record-breaking voter turnout and overwhelmingly re-elected in the 2000 general election.
After being elected to the Senate, Bauer sold his wholesale business to devote full time to public service. The Honorable Mark Hammond SECRETARY OF STATE
