Pyers Lockwood took the Gold at the English Schools Athletics championship at Birmingham on Saturday 13th July in the 400m Hurdles. Not only did this secure his position as the number one 400m Hurdler in the UK but he also ran another personal best performance of 55.08. He would have run faster but was aiming for the win, which he did comfortably leading from the start, not the time.

In the heats on Friday he ran a very tactical race, conserving energy that saw him walk over the finish line in preparation for Saturday’s final.

Over the bank holiday weekend of 24th to the 27th May, Claverham Art students from years 8 to 10 toured the artistic wonders of Paris. From the Louvre, Musee D’Orsay, Centre Pompidou, L’Orangerie, Montparnasse Tower, to the Eiffel Tower, a Seine river cruise and exploring the gardens of Claude Monet, the pupils experienced the vast parisian culture and arts.

The intinerary was packed as you can imagine but the staff and pupils made the trip inspirational, fun and rewarding. It certainly seemed as though everyone got a lot from the trip. It was great to watch them bond and record their activities in photos, drawings or messages to their parents/carers. It was a joy to see them so independent and confident and I cannot wait to see what our future GCSE art students have in store for their coursework. I look forward to seeing them on our next art trip.

Punctuality

We appreciate that it can be difficult for families who live some distance from Claverham to get to school on time, particularly if they rely on public transport. Nevertheless, we still feel that too many of our pupils are arriving to College after 8.50 am, even when they live close to the College. We intend to apply stricter sanctioning arrangements next year to address this problem and would appreciate your on-going support in this respect.

Put down your devices and ‘get outside’ in the summer holidays! As the summer holidays are just around the corner, we thought it would be a great idea to encourage young people to put their devices down this summer break and enjoy the wonders of the outdoors. The National Online Safety organisation have put together #WakeUpWednesday and are sharing their Screen Addiction guide to arm parents with the knowledge to be able to identify and support young people who may be spending too much time on their devices. Please see the page overleaf....

The students were able to experience first-hand what they are taught in World Views lessons, and see worship in practice.

Social Media As highlighted in the newsletter earlier this year, members of staff have had to deal with a growing number of incidents caused by misuse of social media outside of school. I would ask that parents and carers please help us by ensuring that they have regular conversations with their son or daughter regarding their use of social media, and carefully monitor their usage, making sure that it is age appropriate and that the content is not inappropriate.

I will speak to all of our pupils about these issues in our assemblies in the final weeks of term. In this way, I hope that all members of the College community will be absolutely clear about our expectations and that this will avoid any unnecessary issues at the start of the new academic year.
