A bit expensive, but a solid storyBy JmaynardThis is an unusual release. It came out after the Marvel Now launch, but is not exactly a part of any series. The Avengers as depicted hue more closely to their film counter-parts, but with more members not in the films (Wolverine, Captain Marvel) that tie it to the current ongoing series. This is truly a stand-alone story. The heroes are like their film versions in that they have reached the point of respecting one another, but are not really friends yet. The story opens with the team learning about a new drone in war-torn Slorenia that is of unknown origin. It turns out to be a technology/magic hybrid that ties into both Thorrsquo;s and Caprsquo;s pasts. The story was quick, and not particularly deep, but well worth reading for the characterization. I especially liked Hawkeye and Banner here. I enjoyed this enough that I really wish they had used this to launch the Avengers' series, rather than the ldquo;white eventrdquo; Marvel Now storyline. However, this book is also short and the retail price of the hardcover is too high for what you get. But it is worth getting at a big discount, or possibly as a paperback release. The Clark Gregg intro is a nice bonus for readers. Recommended.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. AVENGERS: Earth's Most Adequate Adventures (in this case)By Harold HoltI believe this is the first in a series of new "original graphic novels" from Marvel. Writer Warren Ellis, not generally known for doing much 'mainstream' comic book work, has been easing his big toe back into the pool with such Marvel titles as SECRET AVENGERS and THUNDERBOLTS. In this graphic novel, he chronicles an AVENGERS tale for our reading pleasure. I don't feel the need to regurgitate the plot, as other reviewers on here have adequately captured it. Suffice it to say it is a viable enough plot that adds a bit of retcon flavor to Captain America's history, adding a Thor tie-in to emphasize the seriousness of the threat level Earth's Mightiest find themselves up against.SETTING: Although the story doesn't specify its place in continuity, it obviously takes place some time after Wolverine has joined the heroes' ranks--an atrocity we can thank Brian Michael Bendis for. It also takes place sometime after Mark Waid's chronicling of the Hulk's adventures as a special member of SHIELD.CHARACTERIZATION: Some of the heroes' traits are a bit exaggerated. Thor comes off a bit more arrogant and standoffish than he is generally portrayed, Black Widow a bit more callous, Cap maybe a tad more alienated-- though the latter is understandable and within reason. One high point is the level of insight Bruce Banner exhibits when discussing Hulk, though I could have done without the movie nods of having him refer to Hulk as "the other guy." It was cute in the movie, but a tad uncharacteristic coming from a guy who has run with his alter ego through myriad phases and stages of transformations over the years.ART: This is just my subjective opinion, but I would have preferred seeing a more dynamic artist handle the kind of battle scenes generated by an Avengers brawl. Mike McCone is ok on a book like Batman or maybe Daredevil, but the Avengers need Ron Frenz; Mark Bagley; M.C. Wyman, or even Sean Chen. Someone whose style is clear and dynamic. McCone comes off as too inky and abstract in several panels.OVERALL: The story was decent. Kinda funny that the poor nation of Slorenia (last seen during Kurt Busiek's Avengers run) just can't catch a break. I liked the story and enjoyed various parts of it, but I was hoping for something a bit more dynamic and unforgettable. This is the kind of adventure I can see myself forgetting in a couple years. It is a decent read, but certainly not worth the $24.99 price on the back of the hard cover. If you can find it on here for seven or eight bucks, go for it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Endless MehtimeBy MtMThis could have been a regular story arc. ... more conspiracies within S.H.I.E.L.D. The art work is not bad and it's an ok read for an hour or so. An abomination, long thought buried, has resurfaced in a war-torn land. But now it wears an American flag. Faced with another nightmare reborn, Captain America will not stand for yet more death at the hands of a ghost from his past. Haunted by his greatest shame, Thor must renew the hunt for a familiar beast. At their side, an assemblage of allies united to end the threats no one of them could face alone. They are soldiers. Warriors. Comrades-in-arms. Mighty heroes led by a living legend, stronger together than apart. They are the Avengers. About the AuthorSpringing from the fertile ground of the U.K. comics scene, Warren Ellis came to Marvel during the early '90s and proved his iconoclastic mettle in the ultra-edgy series Hellstorm and the miniseries Druid - followed by fondly remembered, extended runs on Excalibur and Doom 2099. After making a name for himself as a premier talent with Wildstorm's Stormwatch, Transmetropolitan, The Authority and Planetary, Ellis returned to Marvel to pen such titles as Ultimate Fantastic Four, the Ultimate Galactus Trilogy and Iron Man. His Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. was both a critical smash and cult favorite. In addition to reviving the 1980s New Universe in newuniversal and writing Thunderbolts, Ellis took over Astonishing X-Men following Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's departure, and penned perhaps the definitive story of the Armored Avenger in Iron Man's "Extremis."Artist Mike McKone was pegged as a future industry superstar when his first work was published in DC's JLA and Legion. In 2001, McKone collaborated with writer Judd Winick to launch Marvel's Exiles, a surprise hit among X-fans. Two years later, he teamed with writer Geoff Johns to revamp Teen Titans for DC. Since signing an exclusive contract with Marvel, McKone's credits include Fantastic Four, Amazing Spider-Man and Avengers Academy. The figure of the “metahuman,” the human with superpowers and purpose, embodies the transfigured nerd whose defects—intellect, swarm-behavior, abnormality, flux, and love of machines—become virtues of survival in the twenty-first century. The conflict among capitalism, fascism, and communism, which drove the Cold War and its immediate aftermath, also drove the Golden and Silver Ages of Comics. In the era of planetary emergency, these forces reconfigure themselves as different versions of world-destruction. The metahuman also signifies going “beyond” these economic and political systems into orders that preserve democracy without destroying the biosphere. Therefore, the styles of metahuman figuration represent an appeal to tradition and a technique of transformation. I call these strategies the iconic style and metamorphic style. The iconic style, more typical of DC Comics, makes the hero an icon of virtue, and metahuman powers manifest as visible signs: the “S” of Superman, the tiara and golden lasso of Wonder Woman.

The characters are incredibly unique and distinct, and really well scoped and developed. I'm bored with this series. Return to Book Page. Thesis Examination Committee: ______________________________________ Advisor Abigail McGowan, Ph.D ______________________________________ Melanie Gustafson, Ph.D ______________________________________ Chairperson Elizabeth Fenton, Ph.D ______________________________________ Dean, Graduate College Domenico Grasso, Ph.D March 22, 2013 Abstract At just under thirty years the serious academic study of American comic books is relatively young. Over the course of three decades most historians familiar with the medium have recognized that American comics, since becoming a mass-cultural product in 1939, have matured beyond their humble beginnings as a monthly publication for children. However, historians are not yet in agreement as to when the medium became mature. This thesis proposes that the medium’s maturity was cemented between 1985 and 2000, a much later point in time than existing texts postulate. The project involves the analysis of how an American mass medium, in this case the comic book, matured in the last two decades of the twentieth century. The goal is to show the interconnected relationships and factors that facilitated the maturation of the American sequential art, specifically a focus on a group of British writers working at DC Comics and Vertigo, an alternative imprint under the financial control of DC.
