THE SIGNIFICANCE AND MEANING OF THE LITURGY FOR OUR DAILY LIVES Philip Kariatlis For many Orthodox Christians today, the divine Liturgy is simply another service that they attend in order to fulfil their Christian duty - it is the proper thing to do - without it necessarily having any particular meaning for their everyday life. It is not something that they long to go to because of a real sense of personal joy that it gives to their life empowering them to face the daily challenges that they might encounter. Unfortunately, for many of our faithful - even though they are well- intentioned - in their most honest moments, the Liturgy has become a ‘joyless celebration’. It is often said, for example: “I don’t get anything out of the Service” and for this reason they feel a sense of frustration. Still others, will argue: “I consider myself a Christian but I don’t see why I need to go to Church every Sunday, if at all.” In all this, there is a real sense that, over time, our faithful have forgotten not only what the Liturgy is essentially all about, but equally importantly the significance of this celebration for their everyday life. Even the phrase that is often used, “I attend the Liturgy” shows that over time it has become misunderstood. Far from the Liturgy being a theatrical performance between priest and chanters at which the faithful are simply present, from the very beginning, even in its most primitive form as can be witnessed in the New Testament, the Eucharist was something that the faithful actively participated in, and not simply passively attended, an event that was personally enriching and powerfully transformative for their life. -

A Comparison of the Two Forms of the Roman Rite Mass Structures Orientation Language The purpose of this presentation is to prepare you for what will very likely be your first Traditional Latin Mass (TLM). This is officially named “The Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.” We will try to do that by comparing it to what you already know - the Novus Ordo Missae (NOM). This is officially named “The Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite.” In “Mass Structures” we will look at differences in form. While the TLM really has only one structure, the NOM has many options. As we shall see, it has so many in fact, that it is virtually impossible for the person in the pew to determine whether the priest actually performs one of the many variations according to the rubrics (rules) for celebrating the NOM. Then, we will briefly examine the two most obvious differences in the performance of the Mass - the orientation of the priest (and people) and the language used. The orientation of the priest in the TLM is towards the altar. In this position, he is facing the same direction as the people, liturgical “east” and, in a traditional church, they are both looking at the tabernacle and/or crucifix in the center of the altar. The language of the TLM is, of course, Latin. It has been Latin since before the year 400. The NOM was written in Latin but is usually performed in the language of the immediate location - the vernacular. ISSN 1992-8386 Federation News World STUDENT CHRISTIAN Federation NOVEMBER 2009 Bringing EAP to new levels of excellence SCF’s Ecumenical Assistance Programme W(EAP) took a leap forward in June when the first Excellence Team was trained to evaluate projects. Response from evaluators, participants and funders has all been positive in terms of the future of the EAP, which assists projects of SCMs. The training took place in Amman, Jordan, from 22 to 29 June and was hosted by the Orthodox Youth Fellowship (SCM Jordan) and the Ecumenical Study Centre whose director Archimandrite Prof. Qais Sadiq is a senior friend who supports the Jordanian SCM. Youth and Women in Participatory Education for Development, the EAP project which was evaluated, offers training to women in the Al- Nuzha and Al-Baq’aa Palestinian refugee camps near Amman. The year marked the start of the second four-year planning period since the 10th Assembly, with work shaped by the WCC Strategic Plan 2018-2021, and the accompanying financial strategy, approved by the central committee in June 2018. The 10th Assembly, Busan 2013, called the churches and ecumenical partners to join in a “Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace.” In 2018, the regional focus of the pilgrimage turned to Latin America and the Caribbean, and the WCC celebrated its 70th anniversary, with meetings with church leaders from around the world, including Pope Francis. In the year’s Annual Review, the general secretary affirmed that “our fellowship has taken concrete steps in the ecumenical quest for unity, precisely by walking, working and praying together.” Financial results 2018 In 2018, the WCC reported total income of CHF 24.8 million, total expenditure and transfers of CHF 29.3 million and a resultant net decrease in funds and reserves of CHF 4.5 million. -

None. However, daily personal prayer is highly recommended. Required Weekly Observances. Participation in the Divine Liturgy (Mass) is required. If the Divine Liturgy is not available, participation in the Latin Rite Mass fulfills the requirement. Required Occasional Observances. The Eastern Rites follow a liturgical calendar, as does the Latin Rite. However, there are significant differences. The Eastern Rites still follow the Julian Calendar, which now has a difference of about 13 days – thus, major feasts fall about 13 days after they do in the West. This could be a point of contention for Eastern Rite inmates practicing Western Rite liturgies. Sensitivity should be maintained by possibly incorporating special prayer on Eastern Rite Holy days into the Mass. Each liturgical season has a focus; i.e., Christmas (Incarnation), Lent (Human Mortality), Easter (Salvation). Be mindful that some very important seasons do not match Western practices; i.e., Christmas and Holy Week. Holy Days. There are about 28 holy days in the Eastern Rites. However, only some require attendance at the Divine Liturgy. In the Byzantine Rite, those requiring attendance are: Epiphany, Ascension, St. Peter and Paul, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Christmas. Of the other 15 solemn and seven simple holy days, attendance is not mandatory but recommended. (1 of 5) In the Ukrainian Rites, the following are obligatory feasts: Circumcision, Easter, Dormition of Mary, Epiphany, Ascension, Immaculate Conception, Annunciation, Pentecost, and Christmas. -

COE no 646; RIC.934), patinated, almost extremely fine, an exceptional example of this very poor issue £800-1000 This was struck to commemorate the quashing of a northern uprising in AD.154-5 when the Antonine wall was evacuated after its construction.
