Pursuant to the mandate of the Presidents of Mexico and Panama as part of the Seventh Summit of the Pacific Alliance, held in the city of Cali, Colombia, the Secretary of Economy of Mexico and the Ministry of Trade and Industry of Panama, said that the beginning of these international trade negotiations aims to strengthen bilateral relations. And diversify their exports, encourage mutual trade and investment multiply, promoting economic growth and prosperity of the families of those nations. They also said that the free trade agreement will strengthen its position as a privileged platform to produce and distribute goods and services to the north and south of the American continent as well as in other important global markets. The published data includes the names of directors and some owners of these entities. As with the 'Panama papers', these leaks may shine new light on the practices, policies and measures used by taxpayers and tax jurisdictions – as well as politicians, businesspeople and criminals – which render revenues and tax bases opaque, thus reducing tax bills and resulting in lost revenue for countries. What are the Bahamas leaks? The 'Bahamas leaks' cover more than 35 years of information on companies, trusts and foundations registered in the Bahamas between 1990 and the beginning of 2016, and expose the offshore links of politicians, businesspeople, financiers and fraudsters. First received by the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, the ICIJ and other media partners have made the information available to the public in a publicly searchable database. Unlike the Panama Papers scandal, where files had been leaked from a Panamanian law firm, Mossack Fonseca, the Bahamas leaks information is based on 1.3 million files from the corporate registry of the Bahamas. Through the efforts of its Trade Missions, the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce (T&T Chamber) equips potential investors and exporters of goods and services alike with the tools for successful market penetration. It was no different for the Panamanian Market. The Trade Mission to Panama June 8 to 12, 2016 was another initiative of the T&T Chamber geared towards guiding participants in the exploration of new opportunities in that market. The composition of the Mission included companies from primarily construction and related services, fire protective services, automotive services, marketing and advertising and wholesaler-retailers. The three-day Mission visit offered participants with a snapshot view of the Panamanian Market and focused on securing a foothold into new and exciting business opportunities that lay within. One key factor which contributed to the success of this mission was the increased opportunities for networking with key players of Panama's business community. This provided invaluable insights into their role in facilitating external trade and investment in that market. During this Mission, the delegation met with the Panamanian Chamber of Industry, Commerce and Agriculture, the Investment Promotion Agency of Panama (PROINVEX) and the General Manager of the Colon Free-Zone.

    UNESCO World Heritage Site Threatened by Coastal Highway Project The government of Panama and is moving ahead quickly with a controversial coastal highway project that would cause its 338 year old historic district to lose its UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, destroy sensitive environmental areas. A group of fifteen Panamanian and international organizations have joined together in fighting the project, lead by Fundacion Calicanto. Fundacion Calicanto is a non-profit foundation dedicated to the protection of the historical and human heritage of Casco Antiguo. The foundation, together with fifteen civic groups that make up the Panama Pro Patrimonio Historico (Panama for Historical Heritage or PPPH) alliance, are mounting a defense of the historic district of Casco Antiguo against an imminent threat to the district by a highly-over budgeted and under studied seaside highway that UNESCO has declared a threat to the district and its World Heritage Site status. Background The specific threat is a highway project (known locally as “Cinta Costera Phase 3”) being promoted by the Government of Panama that would break numerous Panamanian laws, cause one of the oldest cities in the Americas to be removed from UNESCO’s World Heritage list, destroy the only remaining beaches in Panama City and cause irreparable damage to an important sector of Panama’s tourism industry.   • Panama Promotes Patenting Unification for Central America and Dominican Republic
    PANAMA PROMOTES PATENTING UNIFICATION FOR CENTRAL AMERICA AND DOMINICAN REPUBLIC Experts representing the Intellectual Property Offices of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic, held meetings from June 30 until July 2, 2015, in Panama, in order to seek the unification and harmonization of the parameters related to the evaluation of patent applications. The meetings also included the participation of representatives of the World Intellectual Property Organization, the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, the Mexican Intellectual Property Office and the European Patent Office. The main purpose of this regional meeting was to update the Manual of Procedures and Patents - a document prepared in 2006 - that allows the use of standardized technical criteria in a regional level in order to strength the manual of examiners procedures of patent and create mechanisms for collaboration between countries for the sole purpose of consolidating efforts that allow the creation of a homogeneous culture in the use of the patent system. Currently, users of the patent system are subject to different opinions with the possibility for a country to grant a patent, while another denies it, due to the fact that the procedures, rules and times to register their patents in each country are different. Panamanian authorities consider that this is a relevant opportunity to promote economic development locally and regionally, which therefore allows the increase in the registration of patents unifying the different legislations, using standardized and accurate criteria of patentability. This will also allow using the system with more confidence, exchanging information, saving time and money, providing better protection for inventors and it might even avoid redundant monopolies.
