  • America's Changing Mirror: How Popular Music Reflects Public
AMERICA’S CHANGING MIRROR: HOW POPULAR MUSIC REFLECTS PUBLIC OPINION DURING WARTIME by Christina Tomlinson Campbell University Faculty Mentor Jaclyn Stanke Campbell University Entertainment is always a national asset. Invaluable in times of peace, it is indispensable in wartime. All those who are working in the entertainment industry are building and maintaining national morale both on the battlefront and on the home front. 1 Franklin D. Roosevelt, June 12, 1943 Whether or not we admit it, societies change in wartime. It is safe to say that after every war in America’s history, society undergoes large changes or embraces new mores, depending on the extent to which war has affected the nation. Some of the “smaller wars” in our history, like the Mexican-American War or the Spanish-American War, have left little traces of change that scarcely venture beyond some territorial adjustments and honorable mentions in our textbooks. Other wars have had profound effects in their aftermath or began as a result of a 1 Telegram to the National Conference of the Entertainment Industry for War Activities, quoted in John Bush Jones, The Songs that Fought the War: Popular Music and the Home Front, 1939-1945 (Lebanon, NH: University Press of New England, 2006), 31. catastrophic event: World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and the current wars in the Middle East. These major conflicts create changes in society that are experienced in the long term, whether expressed in new legislation, changed social customs, or new ways of thinking about government. While some of these large social shifts may be easy to spot, such as the GI Bill or the baby boom phenomenon in the 1940s and 1950s, it is also interesting to consider the changed ways of thinking in modern societies as a result of war and the degree to which information is filtered.

ABSTRACT "KING HARVEST (HAS SURELY COME)": RURAL POPULIST IMAGERY IN ROOTS ROCK MUSIC, 1967-1973 CHRISTOPHER LEE WITTE CANDIDATE FOR DEGREE OF ARTS IN HISTORY UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND MAY2006 PROFESSOR ROBERT C. KENZER The Americanroots rock musical genre of the late 1960's and early 1970's too oftenhas been overlooked in the historical discussion of popular culture of the period. This study, through an examination of the works of fivepopular musical groups- Bob Dylan, The Band, The Grateful Dead, The Byrds, and Creedence ClearwaterRevival - focuseson how this music tied into a continued American mythology tradition of populism. Through an approach that corresponds with Richard Slotkin's views on the creation of Americanmyth , and a focuson the lyrical content of the songs and their presentation of nature, the open road, American heroes and anti-heroes, and death and destruction, this thesis examines how these songs utilized populist philosophies foundin earlier American folkand blues music andadapted them as a means to explain and rationalize their place in the post-modem American society.

  • Let It Rock: the Mount Olympus of American Rock Bands, 1965-1995
Let it Rock: the Mount Olympus of American rock bands, 1965-1995 Course description: This is an eight-week course that will take a deep dive into the music and story of six of the greatest American rock and roll bands, groups that defined the genre. The rich history of rock and roll is full of brilliant songs and singers, but the essence of rock and roll has always been the rock and roll band—that small--usually four to seven piece—ensemble made up of young musicians who caught lightning in a bottle together, taking their blues, R&B, rockabilly, early rock, country, folk and even jazz influences and combining them to create music that is timeless and inspiring. A band is like a family; there is friendship, rivalries, tragedy, triumph and intense love. This course will take a close look at six of the most iconic, artistic, and successful of those bands. In the first three weeks we will cover a trio of the most impactful American groups in rock and roll history. The fourth week we examine a band that was 4/5 Canadian, but made their musical mark in the US. Weeks five and six we cover a band that was originally British, but became a household word when they came to America, and we will devote the final two weeks to a beloved, late, legendary American rocker. Each session will include: • A thorough, fast-moving background lecture about each band, including; quotes, excerpts from books, and photographs of the bands and key people around them presented in a slide show format with accompanying biographical commentary.

  • THE MUSIC of the '60S and ITS LEGACY Loïs Nathan Université Du
THE MUSIC OF THE ’60S AND ITS LEGACY Loïs Nathan Université du Havre (GRIC EA 4314) Describing the music of the sixties and its legacy is a daunting task. The sheer volume of work produced, the number of actors: musicians, writers; and the subject matter treated in the lyrics, as well as in the music; what the music grew out of, and what it became, are enough to humble even the most avid of fans among us. We will nevertheless, attempt to propose a possible “framework” (although the term doesn’t perhaps fit the times), within which to describe what was happening, and what was being said. It will necessarily be a partial treatment. We will begin by looking at some of the musical influences on the 1960s. We can go back to Elvis Presley, born in 1935, and who grew up in Tupelo, Mississippi, and Memphis, Tennessee. Elvis’ musical influences are said to be “the pop and country music of the time, the gospel music he heard in church and at the all-night gospel sings he frequently attended, and the black R&B he absorbed on historic Beale Street as a Memphis teenager.”1 We all know the fame of Elvis. He was loved by many and feared or not so well loved by others. This may have to do with the fact that he combined the sound and style of “his diverse musical influences and (thereby) blurred and challenged the social and racial barriers of the time”2 …certainly not appreciated by everybody. He is referred to at times as a “good-natured misfit.”3 He was a trailblazer.

Issue 144 AUGUST 30TH, 2021 I and so many of us are saddened by the passing of Nanci Griffith at 68. Some singers are good, some are truly great, and the rare few can move you to tears. Nanci Griffith was one of the rare few. Charlie Watts is no longer with us. To say we lost a giant (at age 80) would be to seriously understate the man’s titanic talent and influence. Watts was the Rolling Stones' driving force, a rock-steady powerhouse, yet one who also played with an inimitable sense of jazz-informed swing. The rock world will never again be the same. We are honored to announce a new contributor: Ed Kwok. Ed spent his formative years taking things apart. He subsequently trained as an electrical engineer at Imperial College London in the 1980s, and got caught up in the high-end wave. His early ambition was to be an analog audio designer, but he ended up in digital military electronics. Ed then retired from engineering and relocated back to Hong Kong to concentrate on a financial career. He enjoys the computer audio space, considering it partly science and partly high-end art. Ed founded the Asia Audio Society (asiaaudiosoc.com) with some like-minded friends, with the aim of crystallizing the essence of high-end audio reproduction. In this issue: Ray Chelstowski interviews Stephen Duffy, whose post-Duran Duran band the Hawks has been an undiscovered gem – until now. J.I. Agnew begins an interview series with Martin Theophilus and the remarkable Museum of Magnetic Sound Recording.

  • Fortunate Son”--Creedence Clearwater Revival (1969) Added to National Registry: 2014 Essay by Hank Bordowitz (Guest Essay)*
“Fortunate Son”--Creedence Clearwater Revival (1969) Added to National Registry: 2014 Essay by Hank Bordowitz (guest essay)* “Willy and the Poor Boys” LP Creedence Clearwater “Fortunate Son” 45 sleeve Revival Creedence Clearwater Revival recorded many great songs with often ambiguous meanings, fictitious locations, or unusual characters--it was rarely totally clear what, if anything, they were actually about. From the mythical Mississippi of “Proud Mary” to the apocalyptic “Bad Moon Rising,” from “the happy creatures dancing on the lawn” in “Looking Out My Back Door” to the street corner “Sgt. Pepper” of “Willie and the Poor Boys,” there were few love songs, only a couple of protest songs. John Fogerty, the band’s primary songwriter, created works that were often Faulknerian set pieces as opposed to Hemmingwayesque stories (c.f. Billy Joel). Like Elvis before them, CCR forged R&B and country into a unique alloy. Their strength was more often what they evoked than what they actually said. “Fortunate Son” was not like that. It went straight into attack mode, one of the greatest class- consciousness songs to ever become a hit record. Recorded during the heart of the Vietnam War, it was not about the war per se. It was more about who went to fight in the days before the Volunteer Army, when any 18-year-old’s number could come up in the draft. Fogerty’s and CCR drummer Doug Clifford’s numbers did, in fact, come up and both managed to land in the Reserves. Many of their friends were not so fortunate. Dave Marsh caught the drift in his five star review of the “Willie and the Poor Boys” album in “Rolling Stone,” calling the song “a stab at the privileged that only kids from the wrong side of the ultra-hip San Francisco Bay area could have felt so sharply.” Clifford called the song “a political statement.” John felt he wrote “a confrontation between me and Richard Nixon….
