Snow AUTHOR'S PREFACE/ABSTRACT This essay defends the New Testament as historically accurate, as not being dependent for its doctrinal content on pagan religions and philosophy, and as having properly used the messianic texts of the Old Testament. It attacks Darrell Conder's Mystery Babylon and the Ten Lost Tribes in the End Time, which advocates conversion to some type of Judaism. This document was originally in WordPerfect 5.1 format for Windows 3.1, with elite (12 point) type and six lines of text per vertical inch, with footnotes.     When Was Jesus Born? A Response to a Recent Proposal Lincoln H. Blumell and Thomas A. Wayment Editor’s note: We are pleased to publish this article, which pushes forward the con- versation about what is known and not known about the dating of the birth of Jesus Christ. This article responds to the article by ProfessorJeffrey R. Chadwick on this subject, which appeared in 1 in our volume 49, number 4, available on the BYU Studies website. The goal of the Chadwick article was to harmonize as much of the evidence, both scriptural and historical, as possible, sometimes using new or uncommon interpretations in order to reconcile apparent dispari- ties in the sources. By contrast, Professors Wayment and Blumell prefer a more cautious approach, placing less weight on positions that cannot be established with historical or textual certainty. While both of these articles agree on many points, this new analysis urges readers to adopt a less precise time frame in think- ing about when the birth of Jesus might have occurred. May have been written by the disciple John. According to legend, John was a missionary at Ephesus when Domitian came to power (AD 81-96) and persecuted the Christians. The Prophetic Significance of Stephen Wilson Paroschi Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary Andrews University The historic-messianic interpretation of the seventy weeks1 of Dan 9:24-27 had to wait a very long time for an exegetical defense of the event which closes the prophecy. Up until the end of the eighteenth century—following the tradition of most Church Fathers and Reformers2—many authors simply said that the 70th week, which had started with the baptism of Jesus, came to an end when the gospel started being preached to the Gentiles. The only hint in the prophecy for this conclusion was the introductory phrase, “Seventy weeks are cut off for your people and your holy city” (v. 24), which was assumed to mean the end of all Jewish privileges.3 This interpretation received sounder scriptural support when Stephen was introduced into that prophetic scenario. The first person to do this seems to have been the Irish scholar William Hales. In 1799, Hales published an anonymous volume in which he said that the last of the seventy weeks had ended “about A.D. 34 (about the martyrdom of Stephen).”4 Nearly ten years later, in the first edition of his A New Analysis of Chronology, he was less hesitant in saying that 1 J.     Tyndale Bulletin 43.2 (1992) 331-351. THE JEWISH CALENDAR, A LUNAR ECLIPSE AND THE DATE OF CHRIST’S CRUCIFIXION Colin J. Humphreys and W.G. Waddington Summary Astronomical calculations have been used to reconstruct the Jewish calendar in the first century AD and to date a lunar eclipse that biblical and other references suggest followed the Crucifixion. The evidence points to Friday 3 April AD 33 as the date of the Crucifixion. This was Nisan 14 in the official Jewish calendar, thus Christ died at precisely the time when the Passover lambs were slain. The date 3 April AD 33 is consistent with the evidence for the start of Jesus’ ministry, with the gospel reference to 46 years to build the temple and with the symbolism of Christ as our Passover lamb. The mention of a solar eclipse at the Crucifixion in some texts of Luke is discussed and explained. A new chronology of the life of Christ is suggested. I. Introduction The date of the Crucifixion has been debated for many years, but there has been no agreement on the year nor the day. However, astronomy can be used to reconstruct the Jewish calendar in the first century AD, and hence to rule out many possibilities. For example, an AD 36 Crucifixion, recently revived by Lane Fox,1 appears to be calendrically impossible as will be shown later in this paper. Furthermore, astronomy can be used to identify the most probable date of the Crucifixion. In this paper, which is based on earlier work of the authors,2 we use two approaches to dating the Crucifixion: first, a process of elimination, showing that every year but one is incompatible with the available evidence; second, lunar eclipse evidence which positively identifies a particular date.
