Jack Kerouac was a principal actor in the Beat Generation, a companion of Allen Ginsberg and Neal Cassady in that great adventure. More than sixty years ago, William S. Tani had been recruited from Oakland to work as an optometrist, at Minidoka, a camp for people from Seattle and Portland. All the optometrist's at Minidoka refused to work for the maximum salary of $19. a month. Tani and Yasui had never met. Both were members of the JACL. Tani was surprised by Yasui's personal letter and appealing to Tani from jail to raise money for his defense fund. Why didn't he write to JACL people from Portland? YASUI "Well, I won my case for all good, loyal American citizens. Damn, I wish I were in a position to carry the fight further, but because of my personal citizenship status, I'm going to have my hands full. But even if I were to sacrifice my American citizenship which I have never and never will voluntarily relinquish, I'm glad to have established the fundamental citizenship rights of Americans citizens. "If the JACL doesn't carry on for me, all that I have endured thus far will have been in vain. George, rally the Nisei around and see if some definite steps cannot be taken to liberate the Nisei as a matter of right." When the old Industrial Corporate Music Complex controlled what the world would hear, music for films had to sound like Movie Music (i.e. all pretty much the same) in order to achieve the bloodcurdling definition of having a “market sound”. As far as my incidental music for the theater was concerned, that wasn’t even considered a category, so usually the best a composer could do after composing a score for the theater would be to try and save a copy of the tape or get a friend to make a live recording to share with friends and family after the production closed down. In my case, I often used a fraction of these theater scores as the basis for longer classical works. When the films I was lucky enough to score were submitted to record companies, the few that begrudgingly agreed to record them always indicated that there was no market for what I did, because it didn’t sound like “movie music”, and that what I did was by definition headed to the landfill.

  • BEATS and GINNSBERG Badri Prasad Pokharel∗ ABSTRACT Every Literary Movement Has a Potential to Influence the Future Generation
BEATS AND GINNSBERG Badri Prasad Pokharel∗ ABSTRACT Every literary movement has a potential to influence the future generation. In this context, the Beat Generation, a literary movement was started shortly after the World War II by some ángry young men' or rebellious personalities who were seeking another world for the adjustment away from the confinements of the established norms and conventions. The post war period was a time when many people from every nook and corner were in pursuit of liberation in works, life style and other alternate forms of livelihood. 'Beat' writers, though they didn't follow the established patterns, were socially and culturally accepted by the then young generation either in the group of 'hippie', or in the hallucinogenic world. Engaging in norcotic intoxication, Immoral and unsocial activities like gay marriage, homosexuality etc., purposeless wanderings, practicing Eastern religious activities etc. sound, in a sense, completely non sense, but what can be perceived from those abovementioned activities is that the young generation had been fed up with the established terms and conditions and was on the way of exploring new world. In short, the 'Beats' have shown a way to the aspired youth for an alternate source of creativity. INTRODUCTION In the late 1940s and early 50s the Beat Generation also known as the Beat Movement emerged with the works of some writers such as Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and William Burroughs, Herbert Huncke, Gregory Corso. It was Jack Kerouac, an acknowledged leader and spokesman of the Beat Generation, who for the first time introduced the phrase "Beat Generation" in 1948 to characterize the underground and anti conformist youth gathering in New York.

  • The Lew Welch
Lew Welch: Hermit Poet of Rat Flat Jane Falk The University of Arkon Introduction In May of 1971, Lew Welch disappeared into the woods surrounding Kitkitdizze, poet Gary Snyder’s home, and into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. He had taken a gun and left a farewell note. Despite some supposed sightings and a prolonged search, his body was never found, and no trace of Welch has been seen since. The consensus at the time was that he had committed suicide on some high rock outcropping leaving his body for the vultures (his totem animal) to find. Welch had suffered from lifelong depression and alcohol abuse. He seemed to have been given a last chance at putting his life together when Snyder and other members of the Bald Mountain Association agreed to allow him to build a cabin on land near Snyder’s home. Welch had organized friends to help construct the cabin and had sent out requests for the loan of money to friends and family, receiving a positive response. He saw building this hermit’s cabin as a last chance to put his life together without alcohol and went on Antabuse. Unfortunately, he periodically stopped the drug so he could continue to drink, according to Aram Saroyan in Genesis Angels, and this, coupled with the depressive aspect of Antabuse itself, could have led to suicidal tendencies (127). Welch’s mysterious and complete disappearance can be likened to that of the Chinese hermit poet, Han Shan, who lived in the T’ang Dynasty and whose poems Snyder had translated in the 1950s as Cold Mountain Poems.

They could be considered America's first postmodemists, calling into question academic segregation of artistic disciplines and the view that art and life were separate realities.
