Tropical print trends for the youth market

Tropical print WeSAMPLE took to the streets of Sydney to see SAMPLEwhat the SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE sweet young things are getting into as summer comes early and adds some heat to the options. Not surprisingly there is a relaxed feel to the fashion right now and the pieces feature chilled out jungle and tropical designs. Lace work and inlays add an interesting element and a handmade tone. The ubiquitous muted colours and prints are found in soft, loose shapes. We loved the variety of shorts on show all of which are accessorised with sun-safe, pale legs.

printed pants SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE Something Else We’ve seen printed pants on the catwalks and this spring on the streets of Sydney and Melbourne. It’s the prefect item that transcends the season, when the weather isn’t quite warm enough for bare legs but a way of getting some colour and print into an outfit. Key print trends are African/ Tribal and animal or soft painterly abstracts on silks, satins and acetate crepes. Anna & Boy Mastermind Jenny Fax Hisui – pieces were fluid, with some 1950s shapes and soft ruffles in vivid reds, soft metallics and Mintdesigns layered gingham checks. Inspired by the story from Chernobyl that sunflowers help clean radioactive soil, the setting was a metallic sunflower field. SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE Fur Fur - We were worried SAMPLE that it might be a brand made of…fur, but this cute brand appeals to “Mori Girls” or “Forest Girls”, not hunters. Puffs of tulle and vintage lace, trimmed with rosettes and real Phenomenon flowers, took their cues from vintage lingerie. Mintdesigns – always a commercial favourite, this season, it’s all about print, in washed-out turquoise and orange. The loose shapes, mixes of stripes, spots and gingham in off-beat colours recalled Marni without the complications. Jenny Fax – in her second year, Taiwan-born designer Jen Fang Shueh presented looks inspired by her childhood and the TV show Twin Peaks. G.V.G.V. Lots of 80’s shapes, school girl pleated skirts and SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE anime prints. Key colours SAMPLE were saturated red and Phenomenon black, with hints of pale yellow and baby pink. Fur Fur Matohu – inspired by kimono shapes and modernism, the look was cool, loose and minimalist in subdued blues and greens, a hint of peach and soft grey. Matohu played with stripes, layering Hisui them in different weights. We love the soft striped leggings. G.V.G.V. – drew shapes from the late 1950s, Mintdesigns which reminded us a little of Dior’s recent resort collections. Alongside Capri pants and neat dresses in gelato shades, G.V.G.V. featured strong prints drawn from the jungle, and the ubiquitous gingham check. Phenomenon – this popular menswear brand SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE showed strong stripes SAMPLE and preppy checks with sporty shapes. Gotta love a polka dot biker jacket layered with a check shirt…and it works. Strong reds and inky blues dominated, with shots of fresh mint green. Mastermind – the popular street wear brand collaborated with A Bathing Ape for an instantly commercial collection featuring camo prints, overdyed denim and bandanna prints.

Tokyo Fashion Week has long been a problem child: under funded and poorly organized, key designers opted to show overseas or off schedule, then the March shows were cancelled due to the earthquake / tsunami / nuclear issues. Step in sugar daddy Mercedes- SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLEBenz and IMG, and Tokyo SAMPLE has the money and SAMPLE international connections it badly needed. Cool RUNWAY local brands like Phenomenon, Mastermind and A Bathing Ape finally returned after years, Jenny Fax and Paul Smith came to show his support for his biggest market. So on to the shows: The tokyo fashion week overall feeling was of optimism and colour for Matohu SS12, and given the recent troubles, it’s no Spring / Summer 2012 surprise that most brands also played it safe. STREET Your key look for Summer?

Summer is great, you just have to keep it STYLE simple. But no thongs or singlets! Q+A with Giuseppe Santamaria, the man behind the lense of cool menswear street site What does the future hold for Men in this Town?

My hopes for Men In This Town is to just keep men in this town going with it and continue documenting mens www.meninthistown.com style, hopefully around the world. SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE Scout: How would you describe your great site and how did it come about?

Giuseppe: I would describe my site as a collection of images documenting how men dress during this point in time.

I started the blog as a way for me to practice my photography and also to show that despite common reception, Sydney men have a great sense of style.

How did you get to be involved in NYFW, andSAMPLE what was your highlight? SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE Attending NYFW happened when Tumblr (the blogging platform I use) noticed my work and wanted me to be 1 of 24 bloggers representing them during fashion week. It opened some great opportunities including getting to meet and visit Oscar de la Renta’s studio before showing his line. Not even the media get and opportunity like that!

In your opinion what’s the most stylish city for street menswear?

Undoubtably, New York has a great sense of style but I think you get that everywhere you got, just sometimes you need to look harder.SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE

I would love to visit and shoot in some European countries. Their attitudes towards fashion is very different to those of the western culture. So I think it would be very interesting. SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE

SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE Calvert Avenue is fast becoming London’s one-to-watch shopping street with the recent opening of new menswear boutique, Anthem as testament. The description is tantalising enough in itself, “a luxury cornucopia where menswear meets unique curiosities” although merely a warm up to the boutique itself. Simon Spiteri, super-buyer and the man behind Liberty’s successfully launched menswear department is the style and substance behind the store that promises to be a hub for unknown and emerging new brands.

It’s a place where the concept of ‘trend’ is supplanted with the unusual and uncharted. RETAIL men Save Khaki, Raleigh Denim and Oliver Spencer sit alongside the global elite like Comme Des Garcons Homme Plus and Marni. Embodying a complete lifestyle, the fashion sits alongside unusual books, collectible and curious objects and artwork. Every item has been lovingly considered and curated by Spiteri ensuring a meticulously crafted retail brand. The visual anthem merchandising allows for breathing space, managing to entice with beautifully matched pieces without feeling sparse. Anthem joins a legion of refreshing menswear concepts like SAMPLE SAMPLE Menswear boutique SAMPLE in London Hostem, Present SAMPLE and Denham priding themselves on both an individualSAMPLE philosophy and an exemplary shopping experience.

SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLEnew movie poster design

While checking out the upcoming movie releases, we noticed a trend in poster design: very retro. How does a movie stand out in a sea of celebrity photos and dramatic CG? Go back to illustrations, hand-tinted photos and bold compositions. Current posters pay tribute to the work of the great Saul Bass (his classic poster for Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” was referenced in Mad Men) and Raymond Savignac as well as Russian Constructivist designs of the 1920s. If you’re hankering for some classic design, don’t miss Gary Hustwit’s much awarded trilogy of design SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE documentaries, Helvetica SAMPLE (2007; celebrating the iconic typeface), Objectified (2009; a history of Industrial Design) and Urbanized (September 2011; a look into urban planning).

Looking for a contemporary take on retro design? See the moody work of Scott Hansen, who takes us from Bauhaus to Eames, through 1960s surf movies and on to the optimistic modernism of the 1970s with his own twist. The SanFrancisco-based designer and musician’s work can be seen at: blog.iso50.com
