Its rich artistic legacy permeates through time, into modern decor, never deviating from the basics. Each motif or intricate pattern, draws its inspiration from a myth or folklore, or from the general ethos itself. Covered by the dense forests, soaring mountains, sparkling waterfalls, murmuring springs, gurgling rivers, secluded dales, deep valleys, captivating beaches and sprawling lake, Odisha is a kaleidoscope of past splendor and present glory. Being the meeting place of Aryan and Dravidian cultures, with is delightful assimilations, from the fascinating lifestyle of the tribes, Odisha retains in its distinct identity, in the form of sculptural art, folk art and performing art. The architectural wonders of Odisha must be seen in the Jain caves, which speak about the fine artistry of Odisha’s craftsmen, in the bygone era. The Odias displayed their remarkable creative power, in the Jain sculptural art. While they built their caves like giants, they sculptured the caves like master artists. The theme of these sculptures was so varied, for the artist and his imagination so deep that, as if, he was writing an epic on the surface of the stone. No doubt, Dr. Venkatesha TS UGC-POST Doctoral Fellow this religion took its birth in North India. However, within a couple of centuries of its birth, Department of Studies and this religionis said to have entered into Karnataka. Jaina tradition ascribes III C.B.C. as the Research in History and date of entry of this religion to south India, and in particular to Karnataka. After this period Archaeology Tumkur Jainism grew from strength to strength and heralded a glorious era, never to be witnessed in University, Tumkur-572103 any part of India, to become a religion next only to Brahmanism in popularity and number. Though Jainism was spread over different parts of south India within the first few centuries of the Christian era, its nucleus as well as the stronghold was southern Karnataka. In fact, it is the general opinion that the history of Jainism in south India is predominantly the history of that religion in Karnataka. Such was the prominence that this religion enjoyed throughout the first millennium A.D. Liberal royal patronage extended by the Kadambas, the Gangas, the Chalukyas of Badami, the Rashtrakutas, the Nolambas, the Kalyana Chalukyas, the Hoysalas, the Vijayanagar rulers and their successors, resulted in the uninterrupted growth of this religion in southern Karnataka. -

The late Dr. Georg Biihler s essay Ueber die Indische Secte der Jaina, read at the anniversary meeting of the Imperial Academy of Sciences of Vienna on the 26 th May 1887, has been for some time out of print in the separate form. Its value as a succinct account of the Sravaka sect, by a scholar conversant with them and their religious literature is well known to European scholars; but to nearly all educated natives of India works pu blished in German and other continental languages are practically sealed books, and thus the fresh information which they are well able to contribute is not elicited. It is hoped that the translation of this small work may meet with their acceptance and that of Europeans in India and elsewhere to whom the original is either unknown or who do not find a foreign language so easy to read as their own. Evidences of its existence are found in most of all the Indian states and Haryana was also an important centre of Jainism during hoary past. A large number of Jaina sculptures and other antiquities are occasionally found as chance discoveries from various archaeological sites in Haryana. The Jaina literature also refers to many important Jaina sites such as Agroha, Hansi, Rohtak etc. and many more place are yet to identify which are mentioned in ancient Jaina literature but so far as no attempt has been made to study the Jaina remains in Haryana in holistic perspective. Author of this paper have explored most of the known Jaina sites and provide a systematic documentation of recorded findings. Gajsingh Rathod. The original voluminous Jain Dharma kā Maulika Itihāsa was authored by venerable Ācāryaśrī Hastīmala Jī M.S., the foremost ācārya of Sthanakavasi tradition of Jain congregation. We have been extremely careful in maintaining the content of Jain Dharma kā Maulika Itihāsa (abridged) as it is without any changes / or adding comments by us so as to retain the authentic writings of Ācāryaśrī Hastīmala Jī M.S. Thus the English translation carries his scholarship and research over an extended period of over twenty years. In this English edition, we have tried to keep some of the definitive terms of Jainism as they are and give their English equivalent (as much representative as possible) on the first occurrence and also listed at the end of this note. 47 THE TEMELES - TRADITION Today there are five Jinalayas at Kumbharia, all of which belong to the Svetambara Faith. All students agree that this number seems to be constant at least from the thirteenth century onwards. However, there is a difference of opinion regarding their original dedications. As of today the temples are dedicated to - Mahavira / Santinatha Parsvanatha Neminatha Sambhavana tha However, it is well known that the temples experi- enced a very lean period for a couple of centuries (l5th and 16th) and presumably original images were removed for safe custody. When the shrines came under use again, the original dedications were either forgotten or set aside. But inscriptional .records from these temples as well as some of the iconographic features reveal what these could have been. All scholars who have gone into this problem have concluded that the temples of Mahavira, Parsvanatha and iMeminatha have retained their original dedication, while 48 the present Santinatha temple was originally a temple dedicated to Adinatha and the Sambhavanatha temple belonged to Santinatha. In the original scheme Sambhavanatha did not have a place. The groiinds advanced for these conclu- sions can be briefly stated as under and the credit for the revision goes to Ehaky and Shastri (l97l, 191). 49 Two inscriptions found in the present sintinatha temple refer to the shrine as being dedicated to Adinatha. Further in the revised reading of an inscription found in the 'Astapada' cell of this temple, Dhaky and Shastri (l97l 191) read the words 'Wabheya Prasada', a name which also indicates that it was a temple dedicated to Adinatha. -

N. Upadhye The 9th century C.E. was one of vivid display of activity on the part of both Śve- tâmbara and Digambara authors of whom we possess works of, e.g., Śīlâṅka, Puṣpa- danta, Jinasena and his pupil Guṇabhadra. They all wrote a Universal History (mahā- purāṇa), a hagiography, that is, of the 24 Jinas, 12 Cakravartins (emperors) and 3 x 9 other heroes. The Digambara monks Jinasena and Guṇabhadra composed their Sanskrit kāvya in two parts: the former, called Ādipurāṇa, consists of 47 chapters (parvan), 42 of which were written by Jinasena and deal with the lives of the first Jina, Ṛṣabha, and of the first emperor (cakravartin), Bharata. The other 5 and the 30 chapters of the latter part, the Uttarapurāṇa, were authored by Guṇasena, who also wrote the Ātmânuśāsana. As the Epilogue (Praśasti) tells us, in the rule of the Rāṣṭrakūṭa King Kṛṣṇa II Akālavarṣa the final Triṣaṣṭilakṣaṇa-mahāpurāṇa was dedicated on June 23rd 897 C.E. by Guṇabhadra’s pupil Lokasena (Glasenapp 1926: 331). The chapter on the life of Pāsa, or Pārśva, as the 23rd “fordmaker” (Tīrthakara or Tīrthakṛt) is wrongly called in Sanskrit (see note 8 infra), is edited and translated below. Pārśva is very popular in both Jain denominations,1 to the extent that he not only had his place in the Universal Histories, but was also given separate hymnic * The author expresses his sincere gratitude to several colleagues for various suggestions, and Miss Andrea Polden for checking his English text. -

Much of the time in compilation can be saved if all the contributors follow the pattern systematized in the Review and use the spelling of place-names as given in the maps of Survey of India. Apart from the items relating to the activities of Archaeological Survey which have been supplied by my colleagues in Headquarters, Circles and Branches, the material was received as usual from various State Governments, Universities and other research organizations. -
