But the TV series, particularly during its genesis, was both a product of its own time, and that of an earlier era. Both Flash Gordon and Dick Tracy had made the leap to the big screen before Superman had even hit newsstands, and both saw their serial adventures get two sequels. While Flash Gordonparticularly the first one, was a faithful within the limitations of its budget translation of the Alex Raymond comic strips, Dick Tracy was less so. Years before Richard Donner and Christopher Reevethis one made audiences believe a man could fly, and featured a perfectly cast Tom Tyler in the title role, but was still rather beholden to serial storytelling conventions and the aforementioned budgetary limitations. The Visualization of the Twisted Tongue: Portrayals of Stuttering in Film, Television, and Comic Books JEFFREY K. JOHNSON HERE IS A WELL-ESTABLISHED TRADITION WITHIN THE ENTERTAINMENT and publishing industries of depicting mentally and physically challenged characters. While many of the early renderings were sideshowesque amusements or one-dimensional melodramas, numerous contemporary works have utilized characters with disabilities in well- rounded and nonstereotypical ways. Although it would appear that many in society have begun to demand more realistic portrayals of characters with physical and mental challenges, one impediment that is still often typified by coarse caricatures is that of stuttering. The speech impediment labeled stuttering is often used as a crude formulaic storytelling device that adheres to basic misconceptions about the condition. Stuttering is frequently used as visual shorthand to communicate humor, nervousness, weakness, or unheroic/villainous characters. Because almost all the monographs written about the por- trayals of disabilities in film and television fail to mention stuttering, the purpose of this article is to examine the basic categorical formulas used in depicting stuttering in the mainstream popular culture areas of film, television, and comic books.' Though the subject may seem minor or unimportant, it does in fact provide an outlet to observe the relationship between a physical condition and the popular conception of the mental and personality traits that accompany it. One widely accepted definition of stuttering is, "the interruption of the flow of speech by hesitations, prolongation of sounds and blockages sufficient to cause anxiety and impair verbal communication" (Carlisle 4). Superhero Origins as a Sentence Punctuation Exercise The Definition of a Comic Book Superhero A comic book super hero is a costumed fictional character having superhuman/extraordinary skills and has great concern for right over wrong. He or she lives in the present and acts to benefit all mankind over the forces of evil. Some examples of comic book superheroes include: Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, and Plastic Man. Each has a characteristic costume which distinguishes them from everyday citizens. Likewise, all consistently exercise superhuman abilities for the safety and protection of society against the forces of evil. They ply their gifts in the present-contemporary environment in which they exist. The Sentence Punctuation Assignment From earliest childhood to old age, the comics have influenced reading. Whether the Sunday comic strips or editions of Disney’s works, comic book art and narratives have been a reading catalyst. Indeed, they have played a huge role in entertaining people of all ages. However, their vocabulary, sentence structure, and overall appropriateness as a reading resource is often in doubt. Though at times too “graphic” for youth or too “childish” for adults, their use as an educational resource has merit. Such is the case with the following exercise. Superheroes as a sentence punctuation learning toll. Among the most popular of comic book heroes is Superman. His origin and super-human feats have thrilled comic book readers, theater goers, and television watchers for decades. However, many other comic book superheroes exist. Continuity as Adaptation in the Superman Multimedia Franchise Jack Peterson Teiwes ORCID identifier 0000-0001-8956-1602 Doctor of Philosophy November 2015 School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of the PhD degree Produced on archival quality paper Abstract Since first appearing as a comic book character over three quarters of a century ago, Superman was not only the first superhero, spawning an entire genre of imitators, but also quickly became one of the most widely disseminated multi-media entertainment franchises. This achieved a degree of intergenerational cultural dissemination that far surpasses his comic book fandom. Yet despite an unprecedented degree of adaptation into other media from radio, newspaper strips, film serials, animation, feature films, video games and television, Superman’s ongoing comic books have remained in unbroken publication, developing a long and complex history of narrative renewal and reinvention. This thesis investigates the multifaceted intertextuality between the comic book portrayals of Superman and its many adaptations over the years, including how such retellings in other media have a generally stronger cultural impact, which exerts in turn an adaptive influence upon these continuing comics’ internalised narrative continuity. I shall argue that Superman comics, as a case study for the wider phenomenon in the superhero genre, demonstrate via their frequent revisions and relaunches of continuity, a process of deeply palimpsestuous self-adaptation. The Introduction positions my research methodology in relation to intertextual theory, with an emphasis on providing terminological clarity, while Chapter 1 expands into a literature review on pertinent key scholarship on adaptation studies and the comics studies field specifically. -

They have since become a staple of Batman's arsenal, used for non-lethal ranged attack used to neutralize villains and hit other targets. It is often used to knock guns out of an assailant's hand. Baterangs in different forms are also used by Robin, Batgirl, NightWing, Owlman and even Catwoman. NightWing uses Wing-Dings, while Robin uses Throwing Bird - colloquially referred to as a "Birdarang". Both of these are roughly bird-shaped. Catwoman uses a Batman inspired catarangs and Owlman has his own arsenal of "razorangs".
