In 1892, H. Ward Leonard invented the electronic motor control—also known as the Ward Leonard Drive System—and launched the radical transformation of how electrical distribution systems operated. A graduate of M.I.T. and member of Thomas Edison’s engineering staff, he is credited with over 100 patents, and founding the Ward Leonard Electric Company.

The electronic motor control was a revolutionary success, and quickly adopted by the US Navy; used in passenger lifts for industrial ; powered the first moving sidewalk at the Paris Exposition of 1900 and in subsequent elevator systems; was applied to railway during World War I, and used in ground-breaking anti-aircraft radar systems in World War II—among many other applications.

Since then, the company has continued to be a trusted name for powering Defense, Oil & Gas, and Heavy Industry worldwide.
