RECORDED RICHTER Compiled by Ateş TANIN Previous Update: February 7, 2017 This Update: February 12, 2017 New entries (or acquisitions) for this update are marked with [N] and corrections with [C]. The following is a list of recorded recitals and concerts by the late maestro that are in my collection and all others I am aware of. It is mostly indebted to Alex Malow who has been very helpful in sharing with me his extensive knowledge of recorded material and his website for video items at http://www.therichteracolyte.org/ contain more detailed information than this list.. I also hope for this list to get more accurate and complete as I hear from other collectors of one of the greatest pianists of our era. Since a discography by Paul Geffen http://www.trovar.com/str/ is already available on the net for multiple commercial issues of the same performances, I have only listed for all such cases one format of issue of the best versions of what I happened to have or would be happy to have. Thus the main aim of the list is towards items that have not been generally available along with their dates and locations. Details of Richter CDs and DVDs issued by DOREMI are at http://www.doremi.com/richter.html . • La Cathédrale Engloutie from Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia
La cathédrale engloutie From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia La cathédrale engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral) is a prelude written by the French composer Claude Debussy for solo piano. It was published in 1910 as the tenth prelude in Debussy’s first of two volumes of twelve piano preludes each. It is characteristic of Debussy in its form, harmony, and content. The "organ chords" feature parallel harmony. Contents 1 Musical impressionism 2 Legend of Ys 3 Musical analysis 3.1 Form 3.2 Thematic/motivic structure 3.3 Context 3.4 Parallelism 4 Secondary Parameters 5 Arrangements 6 Notes 7 External links Musical impressionism This prelude is an example of Debussy's musical impressionism in that it is a musical depiction, or allusion, of an image or idea. Debussy quite often named his pieces with the exact image that he was composing about, like La Mer, Des pas sur la neige, or Jardins sous la pluie. In the case of the two volumes of preludes, he places the title of the piece at the end of the piece, either to allow the pianist to respond intuitively and individually to the music before finding out what Debussy intended the music to sound like, or to apply more ambiguity to the music's allusion. [1] Because this piece is based on a legend, it can be considered program music. Legend of Ys This piece is based on an ancient Breton myth in which a cathedral, submerged underwater off the coast of the Island of Ys, rises up from the sea on clear mornings when the water is transparent.

  • Parting the Veils of Debussy's Voiles Scottish Music Review
Parting the Veils of Debussy’s Voiles David Code Lecturer in Music, University of Glasgow Scottish Music Review Abstract Restricted to whole-tone and pentatonic scales, Debussy’s second piano prelude, Voiles, often serves merely to exemplify both his early modernist musical language and his musical ‘Impressionism’. Rejecting both arid theoretical schemes and vague painterly visions, this article reconsiders the piece as an outgrowth of the particular Mallarméan lessons first instantiated years earlier in the Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune. In developing a conjecture by Renato di Benedetto, and taking Mallarmé’s dance criticism as stimulus to interpretation, the analysis makes distinctive use of video-recorded performance to trace the piece’s choreography of hands and fingers on the keyboard’s music-historical stage. A contribution by example to recent debates about the promises and pitfalls of performative or ‘drastic’ analysis (to use the term Carolyn Abbate adopted from Vladimir Jankélévitch), the article ultimately adumbrates, against the background of writings by Dukas and Laloy, a new sense of Debussy’s pianistic engagement with the pressing questions of his moment in the history of modernism. I will try to glimpse, through musical works, the multiple movements that gave birth to them, as well as all that they contain of the inner life: is that not rather more interesting than the game that consists of taking them apart like curious watches? -Claude Debussy1 Clichés and Questions A favourite of the anthologies and survey texts, Debussy’s second piano prelude, Voiles (‘sails’ or ‘veils’), has attained near-iconic status as the most characteristic single exemplar of his style.

Inspired by Stéphane Mallarmé’s eclogue, it took some time to find favour with critics and the public. Pierre Boulez defined the work as 'the emancipation of the tritone: twentieth century music begins here'. The first book in Debussy’s Préludes is generally thought to have been commenced around 1909 and completed the following year. Debussy intended these masterpieces of impressionism to be evocative not only in a purely pianistic sense, for he asked the publishers of both books to print the titles only at the end of each piece and in parentheses.

A PEDOGOGICAL DISCUSSION OF FIVE FRENCH TWENTIETH-CENTURY PIANO PIECES FOR PROGRESSIVE STUDY by SHARLA ANN BENDER AMANDA W. PENICK, COMMITTEE CHAIR KEVIN T. CHANCE, CO-CHAIR THOMAS ROBINSON KENNETH B. OZZELLO LINDA PAGE CUMMINS MARGOT O. LAMME A DOCUMENT Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in the School of Music in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, AL 2014 Copyright Sharla Ann Bender 2014 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This document provides a pedagogical study of five works for younger pianists by twentieth- century French composers. The works are Jeu by Darius Milhaud, Petite suite serieuse pour concert de famille by Besty Jolas, Les fleurs endormies by Marcel Landowski, A la maniere…d’un violon by Raymond Loucher, and L’histoire de Babar by Francis Poulenc. Each work is published individually by the French editor Gerard Billaudot and is a part of a collection of twenty-seven teaching pieces specifically designated pour les jeunes (“for young people”). These works can be used as an introduction to modern French piano music for elementary through early-advanced students. This subject is of great importance as such works are rarely found in student-level repertoire and method books. The selections are presented in the order of progressive study, each accompanied with a detailed discussion, so that the teacher may decide on how best to integrate the compositions into their students’ training. It is possible to use all five pieces with one student in a graduated progression; but the discussions are presented with one composition per chapter so that an instructor may go immediately to the piece that most closely reflects their student’s current level.

INFORMATION TO USERS This matariai was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavfly dependent upon the quality of the original subm itted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you urxierstand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an imaga and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is oWitaratad with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You w ill find a good imaga of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the matariai. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand comer of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sectiom with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users mdicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.
