The opening song (A FAMILY OF BEARS) introduces them to the audience, and we learn that people think they’re scary, but they’re really not. The bears arrive home to their cabin in the woods, and go to sleep. In the morning, Father Bear reads in the morning paper that the humans are going to build a new road, right through their woods! The family discuss what that might mean for them, and are worried not only for themselVes, but for the trees, the bees, and the riVer. The parents warn Baby Bear to stay away from people! Mother Bear says that all this talk of people is making them hungry, and she says its Father and Baby Bear’s turn to make the porridge. They don’t know how, so Mother Bear teaches them (PORRIDGE). The finished porridge is too hot to eat, so they decide to take a morning stroll while it cools. Meanwhile, in another part of the Woods, Mr. Locks, a lumberjack, is starting his day. Today he’s brought his young daughter Goldi with him, and she’s not Very excited to be there. He tells Goldi to be careful, because there are wild animals in the woods. Goldi says she’s not afraid, especially because she’s a big girl (and has her Teddy with her). Mr. Locks needs to chop down enough trees to make room for the road, and tells Goldi all the things that wood is used for. (WOOD IS GOOD). Goldi offers to help, but Mr. Locks tells her cutting trees is not work for a little girl. She thinks this is unfair, and tells Teddy that just because she’s a girl, she can’t do the same thing boys can do. (JUST BECAUSE I’M A GIRL). By the end of the song, she’s wandered through the woods, and comes across the Bear’s cottage. She goes inside, and realizes that no one is home. She tries all three bowls of porridge, and eats all of Baby Bear’s. She tries all three chairs, and breaks Baby Bear’s chair. She tries all 3 beds, and falls asleep in Baby Bear’s bed. Mr. Locks chops down a tree, yelling “Timber!” and calls for Goldi to come and get her breakfast. In the woods, the Bears hear the sound of the tree falling, but think it must haVe been another animal. Father Bear has an itch, and needs to scratch it! (ITCH AND SCRATCH), but he can’t find his favorite tree trunk. All he sees is a stump, which is confusing. They hear Mr. Locks yell “Timber” again, and decide to go back to the cabin to make sure everything is alright. When they arriVe, they notice that someone’s been there (WHO’S BEEN…), and find Goldi fast asleep in Baby Bear’s bed! Goldi wakes up and apologizes profusely. The Bears tell her they’re not going to hurt her, and she tells them that she loVes animals. She also tells them her father is chopping down trees to build the road, which will go right through where the cabin is. But she’s sure her father doesn’t know that the bears live there. The Bears tell Goldi what the Woods are good for (WOODS ARE GOOD). Nonetheless, Father Bear tells his family that they should start packing. Goldi says that maybe she can persuade her father to put the road somewhere else, but the bears are skeptical. At that moment, they hear the sound of a bulldozer, and Mr. Locks is there, ready to rescue his daughter from the bears. Goldi shows him that they are actually friendly, and he agrees, with a little persuasion, to see if the road can bypass the woods. The Bears are thrilled, and finally are introduced to Mr. Locks. (WE ARE A FAMILY OF BEARS, REPRISE) Then everyone has porridge! • Sacramento Theatre Company Mary Poppins
Sacramento Theatre Company Study Guide The Mary Poppins Jr. By Richard M. Sherman, Robert B. Sherman, and Julian Fellowes Based on the novel by P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney Motion Picture Study Guide Materials Compiled by Anna Miles 1 Sacramento Theatre Company Mission Statement The Sacramento Theatre Company (STC) strives to be the leader in integrating professional theatre with theatre arts education. STC produces engaging professional theatre, provides exceptional theatre training, and uses theatre as a tool for educational engagement. Our History The theatre was originally formed as the Sacramento Civic Repertory Theatre in 1942, an ad hoc troupe formed to entertain locally-stationed troops during World War II. On October 18, 1949, the Sacramento Civic Repertory Theatre acquired a space of its own with the opening of the Eaglet Theatre, named in honor of the Eagle, a Gold Rush-era theatre built largely of canvas that had stood on the city’s riverfront in the 1850s. The Eaglet Theatre eventually became the Main Stage of the not-for-profit Sacramento Theatre Company, which evolved from a community theatre to professional theatre company in the 1980s. Now producing shows in three performance spaces, it is the oldest theatre company in Sacramento. After five decades of use, the Main Stage was renovated as part of the H Street Theatre Complex Project. Features now include an expanded and modernized lobby and a Cabaret Stage for special performances. The facility also added expanded dressing rooms, laundry capabilities, and other equipment allowing the transformation of these performance spaces, used nine months of the year by STC, into backstage and administration places for three months each summer to be used by California Musical Theatre for Music Circus.

  • Mary Poppins
MARY POPPINS Mary Poppins is a musical with music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, with additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, and a book by Julian Fellowes. The musical is based on a series of children's books by P. L. Travers and the 1964 Disney film, and is a fusion of various elements from the two. Produced by Walt Disney Theatrical and Cameron Mackintosh, and directed by Richard Eyre with co-direction from Matthew Bourne who also acted as co-choreographer with Stephen Mear, the original West End production opened in December 2004 and received two Olivier Awards, one for Best Actress in a Musical and the other for Best Theatre Choreography. Following the success of the West End production, a Broadway production with a nearly identical creative team debuted on November 16, 2006 at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Broadway performer Ashley Brown was brought on board to play the title role, and Gavin Lee, who had originated the role of Bert in the West End production, reprised his role in the Broadway production. From the “Mary Poppins Education Series – The Magic of Mary”: “To create the magic used in Mary Poppins, the producers turned to celebrated theatrical illusionist Jim Steinmeyer – famous for his work with magicians, including David Copperfield and Siegfried & Roy - and for the flying effects, the legendary Flying by Foy, who have set new standards for flying on the Broadway stage for over 50 years.” Ashley Brown: “I wasn’t flown for the first time until about two weeks before we opened in New York…and it’s really become one of my favorite moments, because I can see the faces of the people for the first time, and just see how everybody is reacting.” Gavin Lee: “When I walk around the proscenium arch and tap dance and sing upside down, I can hear the audience every night, applauding, the kids gasping and pointing up there and it’s just a thrill to be able to do this magical sort of trick.” We’ve found a whole new spin… …if you reach for the heavens, you get the stars thrown in! We Love to See You Fly.

  • Festival Program
28 28TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF NEW MUSICALS WELCOME 1 FROM THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE FOR MUSICAL THEATRE’S PRESIDENT WELCOME To our 28th ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF NEW MUSICALS! Where can 600 people immerse themselves for two days in the possibility and potential of musical theatre? Where can you travel from New England to Egypt to England (in two different centuries) in a single day? Where can the writers of eight new shows have the opportunity to showcase their work to their perfect target audience, an audience filled with people who can help them find their next best step forward? Only at NAMT’s annual Festival of New Musicals. The shows you’ll see were selected through a blind process by our amazingly hard-working Festival Committee, from a pool of nearly 200 new works. They were, of course, picked for their quality, but they were also selected because of the range of worlds, characters and themes they explore. They’ll make you laugh, perhaps gasp, probably rethink a long-held perspective…good musical theatre is wonderfully stealthy that way. You’ll leave New World Stages entertained, challenged, provoked. We’re delighted that you’re here to spend two days with us; we hope it’s the beginning of a much longer relationship between you and these exciting writers and their pieces. The Festival is just the starting point, the spark to ignite ongoing development. Our sponsors, donors and advertisers make this Festival possible, by supporting this important annual event and NAMT this week and throughout the year. Thank you! Many thanks again, as well, to the Festival Committee, the NAMT staff and all of you, our audience.
