How can we claim a relationship with one genre—like the blues to Memphis or jazz to New Orleans or surf sounds to Southern California— when our greatest hits span categories from rock and rap to disco and emo? On the one hand, we introduced the country to the Latin grooves that powered Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine. On the other, we gave the world 2 Live Crew and a hip-hop album (“As Nasty As They Wanna Be”) with lyrics so explicit that a U.S. district court judge ruled it obscene. Miami brought us Mr. 305 himself, Pitbull. Carol City Saturday-Sunday 9am-5pm produced rapper Flo-Rida. Hialeah launched the career of KC and the Sunshine Band, which delivered disco to the masses throughout the 1970s with fi ve No. 1 singles. And Boca Raton gave us I’m-wearing-my-heart-on-my-sleeve emo heartthrob Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional and doughnut-licking pop diva Ariana Grande.
