One of the seven countries forming ex-Yugoslavia from which it declared Independence on 1991. Macedonia is a landlocked country, has borders with Kosovo, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Albania. Geographically Macedonia is defined by mountains, valleys and rivers. Skopje - The Capital and largest City, is the country’s Political, Cultural, Economic and Academic Center. Ohrid - Macedonia's most seductive destination, with an atmospheric Old Quarter cascading down a graceful hill, crammed full of beautiful churches and topped by the bones of a medieval castle. Its cobblestone streets are flanked by traditional restaurants and lakeside cafes, its beautiful and peaceful Lake Ohrid. Traveling through the Landmark Gems of Macedonia, you will be surprised by the beautiful sceneries along our trip, monasteries, lakes, Balkan music, cuisine, SPA and much, much more…. After landing at Ohrid International Airport, St. Paul, we will start our trip. Ohrid, a town of vast history and heritage, was made an UNESCO Heritage Site in 1980. Nestled between high mountains up to 2,100 m and Lake Ohrid, it is not only a place of historic significance but also of outstanding natural beauty. Ohrid is the jewel in Macedonia's crown. Today we will visit some of the Gems of the City starting by the Old Town Fortifications, crowned with King Samoil’s Fortress, the Lower Gate, the Upper Gate, the Front Gate near St. Bogorodica Celnica Church, we will have the opportunity to see the Ohrid Traditional Architecture along “Čar Samoil” and “Ilindenska” streets. Robevci & Uranija houses are good examples. After a break we will proceed to Saint Naum Monastery, one of the most beautiful monasteries in Macedonia and an important pilgrimage place. Breathtaking setting on a plateau over Ohrid Lake and Galičica mountain towering from behind. It was founded in the 910th by St. Naum, but the present-day church was built in the 16th Century. Of the original church only remains the side chapel with the grave of St. Naum that still stands. The frescoes were painted in 1806 (the side chapel frescoes depict the life and miracles of St. Naum); in the first chamber the church look for the fresco of Saint Cyril and Methodius and their students including St. Klement and St. Naum. End of excursion, we will drive to our hotel for dinner and overnight in Ohrid. Mail: [email protected] Ohrid – Struga - Ohrid After breakfast we will drive to Struga, a remarkable city lying on the “Crn Drim” river (black river) that flows into the Adriatic Sea. Struga is representing different cultures, and religions, customs of Christians Orthodox living side by side with the Albanians and the Macedonian Muslims. Every August at the Poetry Bridge are held the Struga Poetry Evenings visited by poets, writers and artists from all around the World. We will stroll the city walking through cobblestone streets of the Old Town from both sides of the river. We will make a short break for coffee and taste the special sweets of Struga then we will reach back our bus to continue to Ohrid. On our arrival we shall explore other zones we didn’t on the first day, such as Plaošnik the Archaeological site with its conserved mosaics, the Icon Museum, Paper Museum and Pearl shop, walk along the waterside promenade enjoying the atmosphere, just like the locals. We will return to our hotel to refresh and change before Gala Diner in one of the most impressive Restaurants, there we will enjoy the Macedonian real atmosphere, with great performance of Musicians. Real Dream... End of the day we shall return back to our hotel for overnight at Ohrid. Mail: [email protected] Ohrid – Radožda & Kališta - Spa Center Today after breakfast we shall walk or drive to the lake bank, there our taxi boats are waiting for us to lead us by the most picturesque way to get over the villages Radožda and Kališta. That is quite impressive to see the cliffs and church of Saint Archangel Michael loom up over the village is situated at 725 m above sea level. Radožda was founded in Tsar Stefan Dušan era, ten centuries ago. The Church was built on the Jablanica Mountain range above Radožda village in the 13th century in a natural cave and was dedicated to the military commander of the Bodiless Army – The Archangel Michael. Most of the frescoes date from the 14th century with one from the 13thC. If it will be possible we shall visit Kališta as well. We will reach back by boat to the second part of our day which will be dedicated to our souls and bodies treatment in one of the most famous SPA Centers in Ohrid, having massage, sauna, and more surprises accompanied by light local dish and beverage. Vigorated by the natural treatments we shall return in late afternoon to our hotel. End of the day, back to hotel for dinner and overnight. All depending of the flight schedule, we will have free time to complete our shopping souvenirs, before driving to the International Airport of Ohrid to fly safely home. I left Arizona on a Monday morning and arrived in Thessaloniki on Tuesday afternoon before traveling on to Naxos on Wednesday. Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece and the capital of the Greek province of Macedonia. After Naxos, I would be traveling to the Republic of Macedonia which, under Greek pressure, may be changing its name to the Republic of Northern Macedonia (more below). Of course, some Greek nationalists don’t want the name Macedonia mentioned at all and some Macedonians don’t like the change either. When I was here, a scandal erupted of meddling by the Russians who don’t want this `deal’ either since it will pave the way for Macedonia to join NATO. Thessaloniki was built and rebuilt many times: it went from a pre-historic settlement to Macedonian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman rule. Its fire in 1917 made it possible to plan a new city (see picture below). It was on the Via Egnatia (as is Ohrid) which connected Rome to Istanbul and is now a footpath.     PORTALS AND DOORS IN TRADITIONAL OHRID ARCHITECTURE Elena Nikoljski Panevski, Vladimir Karanakov ABSTRACT The basis for this scientific work is traditional Macedonian architecture, with emphasis on old doorway of family houses and religious objects (sacral and profane architecture). Ohrid has always been interesting for examination from these aspects, because of the fact that it has lots of historical monuments. The old part of the city contains houses, museums and churches which are one of the quality examples for traditional Macedonian architecture. The main purpose of this paper is to learn more about details in architecture, and of course, the value of details, especially old doors, portals, their dimensions, characteristics, art style, their constructors etc. This is because there is a lot of information originating from literature, books, study works and other written sources about Macedonian traditional architecture, but there is not much information about their details such as doors, windows, portals, etc. These beautiful, genius objects were built in the 19 th century. Today, they attract people who love art with its special charm and beauty, and inspire specialists - architects - for its contemporary application and creation, releasing it from fake values. There are many towns in Macedonia with well-preserved architecture dating from the 19 th century: Krushevo, Kratovo, Novo Selo, Tetovo, Debar, Struga, Prilep, Kriva Palanka, Strumica.     ODIHR ELECTION OBSERVATION MISSION FORMER YUGOSLAV REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA 1999 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS – SECOND ROUND RE-RUNS 5 DECEMBER 1999 PRELIMINARY STATEMENT Skopje, 6 December 1999 – This preliminary statement is issued by the OSCE/ODIHR Election Observation Mission, prior to the completion of the entire election process. This statement concerns the re-running of the second round of voting in 230 of the country’s 2,973 polling stations, following the decisions by the State Election Commission (SEC) and Supreme Court to annul the election in those polling stations. It should be considered in conjunction with the previous statements issued by OSCE/ODIHR after the first and second rounds of voting. SUMMARY OF CONCLUSIONS The OSCE/ODIHR Election Observation Mission has some serious concerns about the election process in many of the re-run polling stations. Whilst the election proceeded fairly smoothly in some polling stations, it is clear that in others serious breaches of the law took place. The genuine participation of voters was visibly higher than for the previous round of the elections and in some polling stations officials have worked to improve the process. However, in other polling stations there was widespread ballot stuffing and multiple voting, resulting in voter turnout figures which appear to be unrealistic. There was also an over-presence of party activists around polling stations, leading to a tense atmosphere and at least two violent incidents, in Lipkovo and Struga, which are completely unacceptable. The irregularities committed undermine the credibility of the electoral process in these affected polling stations. The Social Democratic Union of Macedonia’s (SDSM) withdrawal of their representatives from the polling stations added confusion, and deprived the process of the presence of opposition representatives, which is vital for the transparency of the election.

The city of Tetovo, located in Northwestern Macedonia not far from Skopje, having rapidly grown from merely 20.000 to 100.000 is now Europe’s most polluted city. Skopje, Macedonia’s capital is second.1 The situation is not much better in other larger urban areas in the country, such as Bitola and Struga. Pollution is now believed to be one of the leading causes of death, and to be a major public health hazard, risk factor – and growingly, a major social, political and economic challenge. The pollution in the country has a number of sources and manifestations, and the concentration of both PM2.5 and PM10 particles are high, sometimes few times higher than what is concerned a limit by international standards. After long period of neglect, in the last few years the question of the air quality has become a hot topic in the public debate. Air pollution becomes a contentious topic, and a reason for a growing number of civic mobilizations – in the first place, on social media such as Facebook and Twitter, but also on the grassroots – and more and more ecological civic movements are being formed.
