“I have shaken the hand of Moses, Michelangelo and Ben Hur.” Cliff Harrington Cliff interviewing Charlton Heston, Imperial Hotel, 1976 Cliff Harrington (1932 — 2013), traveler, writer, English teacher, friend Interviewed by Allan Murphy, Tokyo 26 March, 1998 Text copyright Allan Murphy, 2017 http://www.finelinepress.co.nz "1 Preface I met Clifford (Cliff) Harrington when we both worked for an English language school in Tokyo. The English Language Education Council (ELEC) had its own seven-storey building, next to Senshu University, for over 40 years before moving to smaller premises in Jimbocho. We worked together for at least 10 years. The school's foreign teachers basically fell into one of two camps. There were the older teachers with 20 or more years of time here and to whom Japan was home. And there were the younger teachers with a maximum of five years or so here. Most were in Japan for the travel experience or what Australians refer to as "the gap year" — a break after graduating from university and before taking a full-time job at home. Needless to say, Cliff was in the former group, and I was in the latter. Of all the old hands, to me anyway, it seemed that only Cliff could truly relate to the younger staff. Typically on a Friday night after work, Cliff and half a dozen other teachers would go to a nearby pub. Along with the beer, soon travel stories would be pouring out. Everyone had some interesting experiences to share. But, whenever it became Cliff's turn, he'd easily trump all of us and then hold the floor.

INVENTORY TO ARCHIVAL BOXES IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING, AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by MBRS Staff (Last Update December 2017) Introduction The following is an inventory of film and television related paper and manuscript materials held by the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center. If you are unable to locate a specific item in this inventory, please contact the reading room.

Films of this subgenre counter fears and anxieties of technological advancements by re-imagining the rise of technology and its societal effects as a transitional process through the illustration of literal and visceral depictions of the necessary alterations people will have to undergo in order to transition successfully into the new world.

Mongrel Media Presents SKETCHES OF FRANK GEHRY DIRECTED BY SYDNEY POLLACK “I prefer the sketch quality, the tentativeness, the messiness, the appearance of in-progress rather than the assumption of total resolution and finality..” Running time: 82 mins Distribution 1028 Queen Street West Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M6J 1H6 Tel: 416-516-9775 Fax: 416-516-0651 E-mail: [email protected] www.mongrelmedia.com Publicity Bonne Smith Star PR Tel: 416-488-4436 Fax: 416-488-8438 E-mail: [email protected] High res stills may be downloaded from http://www.mongrelmedia.com/press.html Synopsis “Sketches of Frank Gehry" is director Sydney Pollack's first feature length documentary on the acclaimed architect, Frank O. Gehry. The two men have been friends for many years, and Pollack completed the film over a period of five years, starting in 2000. Frank Gehry loves to sketch; it is the beginning of his architectural process. And it is his love of the sketch that gave Pollack his first clues to the style of this documentary film. Beginning with Gehry’s own original sketches for each major project, the film explores Gehry’s process of turning these abstract drawings, first into tangible, three-dimensional models, often made simply of cardboard and scotch tape, then into finished buildings of titanium and glass, concrete and steel, wood and stone. To capture the sketch quality in the documentary, Pollack uses a combination of film and Mini DV (digital video) as his media. Spending countless hours in Gehry’s studio, on building sites, and in his home, this unobtrusive and quiet shooting style has captured, for the first time, the essence of Gehry’s unique architectural process, and his shy and elusive personality.

This paper will cover six films, in which the anti-hero will be identified and discussed as a function of their respective culture, and place in society. Themes of motivation, agency and control, and identity and justice will be discussed as they pertain to the anti-hero.
