Biographical note

Composer Walter Jurmann was born October 12, 1903, in Vienna, Austria. He began his career as a piano player in Austria and in 1927 moved to Berlin, where he became a pianist at the Eden Hotel. During his time in Berlin, Jurmann collaborated with the lyricist Fritz Rotter (1900-1984) and the Polish composer Bronislaw Kaper (1902-1983), creating a number of hit songs. In the early 1930s, Jurmann and Kaper also wrote songs for German and French films, and Jurmann wrote revues during a stay in Paris in 1933. He sometimes issued music under pseudonyms while working in Europe. In 1934, Louis B. Mayer recruited Jurmann and Kaper for MGM's film productions, bringing them to Los Angeles. The pair wrote songs for the Marx Brothers' A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races, and the films The Mutiny on the Bounty, Escapade, and San Francisco. Jurmann also composed music for several songs in the Judy Garland musical Presenting Lily Mars. By the mid-1940s, Jurmann had left the film industry, becoming a freelance composer. He later wrote a number of love songs, as well as songs for the cities of San Antonio, Houston, and Los Angeles. Jurmann died on June 17, 1971, while traveling in Budapest, Hungary.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of material related to the career of composer Walter Jurmann including scores, lyrics, business and personal papers, correspondence, and photographs. Scores are primarily songs for films and popular songs in English and German. Also included are posthumous articles, clippings, programs, and other items concerning Jurmann's music. Much of collection, especially biographic material and some scores, was compiled by Jurmann's wife Yvonne Jurmann after his death.

    University of Dubuque / Charles C. Myers Library INVENTORY OF AMERICAN SHEET MUSIC (1844 – 1949) May 17, 2004 Introduction The Charles C. Myers Library at the University of Dubuque has a collection of 573 pieces of American sheet music (of which 17 are incomplete) housed in Special Collections and stored in acid free folders and boxes. The collection is organized in three categories: African American Music, Military Songs, and Popular Songs. There is also a bound volume of sheet music and a set of The Etude Music Magazine (32 items from 1932-1945). The African American music, consisting of 28 pieces, includes a number of selections from black minstrel shows such as “Richards and Pringle’s Famous Georgia Minstrels Songster and Musical Album” and “Lovin’ Sam (The Sheik of Alabami)”. There are also pieces of Dixieland and plantation music including “The Cotton Field Dance” and “Massa’s in the Cold Ground”. There are a few pieces of Jazz music and one Negro lullaby. The group of Military Songs contains 148 pieces of music, particularly songs from World War I and World War II. Different branches of the military are represented with such pieces as “The Army Air Corps”, “Bell Bottom Trousers”, and “G. I. Jive”. A few of the delightful titles in the Military Songs group include, “Belgium Dry Your Tears”, “Don’t Forget the Salvation Army (My Doughnut Girl)”, “General Pershing Will Cross the Rhine (Just Like Washington Crossed the Delaware)”, and “Hello Central! Give Me No Man’s Land”. There are also well known titles including “I’ll Be Home For Christmas (If Only In my Dreams)”.

The British violinist has a “thriving solo career” per the New York Times, which “has been built on inventive programming and a probing interpretive style.” The new release draws on Hope’s extensive research into European composers - among them Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Miklós Rózsa, Hanns Eisler, and Franz Waxman to name a few - who fled fascist persecution to relocate to Los Angeles where they penned some of the 20th century’s most iconic film scores. Chapel Hill 2017 Approved by: Annegret Fauser Tim Carter Mark Katz Chérie Rivers Ndaliko Jocelyn Neal ©2017 Gina Bombola ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Gina Bombola: “Can’t Help Singing”: The “Modern” Opera Diva in Hollywood Film, 1930–1950 (Under the direction of Annegret Fauser) Following the release of Columbia Pictures’ surprise smash hit, One Night of Love (1934), major Hollywood studios sought to cash in on the public’s burgeoning interest in films featuring opera singers. For a brief period thereafter, renowned Metropolitan Opera artists such as Grace Moore and Lily Pons fared well at the box office, bringing “elite” musical culture to general audiences for a relatively inexpensive price. By the 1940s, however, the studios began grooming their own operatic actresses instead of transplanting celebrities from the stage. Stars such as Deanna Durbin, Kathryn Grayson, and Jane Powell thereby became ambassadors of opera from the highly commercial studio lot. My dissertation traces the shifts in film production and marketing of operatic singers in association with the rise of such cultural phenomena as the music-appreciation movement, all contextualized within the changing social and political landscapes of the United States spanning the Great Depression to the Cold War. Drawing on a variety of methodologies—including, among others, archival research, film analysis, feminist criticisms, and social theory—I argue that Hollywood framed opera as less of a European theatrical art performed in elite venues and more of a democratic, albeit still white, musical tradition that could be sung by talented individuals in any location.

SPRAGG Chronology Part 1 - Chapter 1 Updated February 5, 2021 “I’ll Never Say Never Again” “The Brothers” Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey The Dorsey Brothers’ Orchestra opened at the Glen Island Casino, New Rochelle, New York on May 15, 1935. Many celebrities attended the successful opening night and the band was in top form. All signs pointed to a successful summer season and further sales of more records. In addition, the Glen Island Casino was wired for numerous nationwide radio broadcasts. However, an undercurrent of tension existed between the brothers. May 30, 1935, during the Decoration Day holiday weekend (now known as Memorial Day), the situation came to a head. As Tommy led the band into the tune “I’ll Never Say “Never Again” Again”, the vocal trio of Roc Hillman, Skeets Herfurt and Don Matteson were approaching the microphone. They remembered hearing Jimmy say something like “Hey, Mac, that’s a little fast, isn’t it?” Tommy reportedly replied, “You want to take over? It’s all yours” and he walked off the bandstand before the audience at the Glen Island Casino. By late July Tommy reluctantly returned to finish the engagement with Jimmy and the band at the urging of Tommy Rockwell and a threat by Michael DeZutter, owner of the Glen Island Casino, to nullify the Dorsey Brothers’ Orchestra contract for the remainder of the engagement. Cork O’Keefe unsuccessfully tried to reconcile the brothers. Tommy refused to work with his brother and the Dorsey Brothers’ Orchestra became Jimmy Dorsey and his Orchestra.
