The Hovingham and Scackleton Newsletter August 2014 Welcome to the Hovingham and Scackleton Newsletter Well. Is this a perfect summer? After all the rain, it's so good to see that the farmers, the crops, all our plants and little animals are benefitting from the warmth. Lets hope the sun stays out for the August car boot sale, the tennis matches and the market - all of which feature in this issue. And how fine that the Worsley’s are celebrating 450 years of living in Hovingham, and the school is about to sound the trumpet for their 150th anniversary. Enjoy this sunny issue. Margaret Bell Contributions for the June issue are welcome. She says she was “particularly inspired by the Howardian Hills, Castle Howard and the wonderful North Yorkshire Moors railway”; and the three movements track those domains. “The first movement describes a walk around Hovingham, along the Ebor Way, seeing Ampleforth Abbey in the distance, visiting Stonegrave village and the Minster there. I have tried to reflect the variety of the landscape, from the beauty of the bird-filled hedgerows to the majesty of the hills. At the end the music is a kind of hymn to the landscape, as if viewed from the Howardian Hills.” This concerto was preceded by Noyes Fludde, by Benjamin Britten. And very well played all the music was by the amateur musicians, including some young and not so young players from Hovingham. Martin will introduce the answers to the question of what philosophy is given by four thinkers: Plato (Greek, c.429-347 BC), René Descartes (French, 1596-1650), David Hume (Scottish, 1711-1776), and Søren Kierkegaard (Danish, 1813-1855). He will speak about the life and times of each thinker, and about how their ideas have become part of our world. For instance, when we talk about our “guiding star” and “our other half”, we are talking the language of Plato. Everyone is welcome. The total cost for all four talks is £10 per head. The money is for the hire of the room and light refreshments. Any surplus will go to the funds of the Action Group. Contact Martin Bell 01653 628494 for further information. 7.30 – 9 pm, October 8th, October 22nd, November 5th, November 19th. Hovingham Tennis Club – Fancy Tennis this summer? We now have a first class tennis court behind the village hall and approximate membership this year is 57 which include 8 family memberships. We have two teams in the Hovingham League, which consists of 21 clubs in three divisions, which for some years now, has been ably run by one of our members. Games are played on a Monday evening, with six players, three men and three ladies, from May to August in different villages and as it is a league rule that you play on at least two courts (so as you are not playing in the dark!) so we use the courts at Terrington Prep School. We also now have tennis balls and racquets available at the Worsley Arms for holiday makers and for visiting children and grandchildren which can be hired, along with the court, for £5 for two hours. If visitors have their own racquets then Margaret, at the local shop, very kindly collects the hire of the court money. Summer Holiday Tennis Tuition Also this year we have a member willing to give tennis tuition in the summer holidays to raise money for her school trip abroad next year. Full details are on the board at the tennis court. Murray Stewart. Chairman. The new book, the recently published ‘’Ancient and Modern Hymns and Songs for Refreshing Worship’’ replaces a hymnbook that has been in use since the late 1960’s and gives the opportunity to have more up to date music in the church. The book has a good selection of ‘old favourites’ and contempary hymns and songs, which will help towards uplifting and enjoyable services. The new book will be introduced at the Harvest Festival on Sunday 29th September at 10.30. Please come and join us for a good sing. William Worsley and Eddie Lucas August Car Boot - Monday August 26th Readers might like to be reminded that they can enjoy another of our enjoyable Car Boot Sales on Bank Holiday Monday, August 26th in Hovingham.
