  • Good Fortune Smiles on 87-Year-Old
LAMORINDA WEEKLY | Good Fortune Smiles on 87-Year-Old Published April 6th, 2016 Good Fortune Smiles on 87-Year-Old By Cynthia Brian Since the "Wheel of Fortune" TV show debuted in 1983, Alice Abruzzini has invited Pat Sajak and Vanna White into her family room for a half hour of fun and games every Monday through Friday between 7:30 and 8 p.m. Friends and family know not to call the octogenarian weekdays during that half hour or they'll get this curt answer: "Sorry I can't talk right now because I'm watching 'Wheel of Fortune.' Please call back later!" The top item on her bucket list for three decades has been to visit the set as part of the audience. Since she is 87, living in Northern California without any ties to the show, she was certain that was one bucket list item that would never be crossed out. But in November, Campolindo graduate Brian From Left: Joan Rankin, Heather Brittany Rankin spent a day auditioning to be a contestant Rankin, Brian Rankin, Vanna White, Alice on "Wheel of Fortune." At the end of the day, the Abruzzini, Pat Sajak and Cynthia Brian. casting director informed him that if he was chosen Photo Carol Kaelson, with permission it would probably take two years before a shoot date was selected. Exactly two weeks later, Brian's phone rang and he was informed that not only had he been chosen to compete, but they needed him in the studio the following week. There were two caveats: One, he could only bring four people as his audience cheerleaders; two, they had cast four people for three spots on the show.

  • The History of CBS Hollywood Television Studios
1 The History of CBS Hollywood Television Studios By Bobby Ellerbee and Eyes Of A Generation.com Preface and Acknowledgement This is a unique look at the events that preceded the need for CBS television studios in Hollywood and, as in New York, the radio division is leading the way. This project is somewhat different than the prior reports on the New York studios of CBS and NBC, for two reasons. The first reason is that in that in those reports, television was brand new and being developed through the mechanical function to an electronic phenomenon. Most of that work occurred in and around their headquarters in New York. In this case, both CBS and NBC are at the mercy of geological and technological developments outside their own abilities…namely the Rocky Mountains and AT&T. The second reason has to do with the success of the network’s own stars. Their popularity on radio soon translated to public demand once “talking pictures” became possible. That led many New York based radio stars to Hollywood and, in a way, Mohammed had to come to the mountain. This story is told to the best of our abilities, as a great deal of the information on these facilities is now gone…like so many of the men and women who worked there. I’ve told this as concisely as possible, but some elements are dependent on the memories of those who were there many years ago, and from conclusions drawn from research. If you can add to this with facts or photos, please contact me as this is an ongoing project.

  • He's One of a Kind
He’s One of A Kind There are successful DJ’s like Ryan Seacrest, Casey Kasem, and Rick Dees. There are artist managers who take unknown personalities and make them big stars. There are concert promoters like Live Nation and AEG. There are TV producers who are known within the industry and there are TV personalities like Tom Bergeron, Bob Barker, and Pat Sajak. There are people who have won multiple Emmy’s, and there are people that have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But only one person, in the entire entertainment industry, has done it all - Bob Eubanks. He was one of the top Rock and Roll DJ’s in Los Angeles at the number one radio station for seven years. In 1972, Eubanks entered the world of country music. He became the exclusive promoter for country star Merle Haggard for ten years. During that time he also managed and crafted the careers of Dolly Parton, Barbara Mandrell, and Marty Robbins. Eubanks is one of only three individuals to promote the Beatles Concerts, all three years they toured in America. He also produced some of the biggest concerts ever which included The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan just to name a few. He was one of the top TV producers, having produced network and syndicated game shows and variety TV. He hosted some of television’s most successful daytime programs, such as The Newlywed Game and Card Sharks. He is the only game show personality to host the same format with original programming for five decades.

Matthew Otto Exercises his right to vote! Meet Matthew Otto, born August 7, 1996. He is a very charming and gregarious young man who never meets a stranger and loves to give hugs and kisses whenever he can. He has a wonderful sense of humor and likes to “mess around” with people. He is very intuitive and is quite an inspi- ration to all who meet him. Having Spina Bifida, using a wheelchair to get around, having a learning disability and needing to use a ventilator because of respiratory failure has not stopped Matthew from fully enjoying his life. He wakes up every day saying “This is the best day of my life!” He loves to go bowling, plays on the Miracle League baseball, soccer and basketball teams, and he loves to “win” every time he crosses home plate, makes a goal or drops the ball in the basket. He’s been to New York to be in the audience of the “Emeril Live” show; been to a taping of the “Wheel of Fortune” where he got to meet and speak to Pat Sajak and Vanna White; shot pool with Reggie Bush; and driven con- struction equipment like Bob the Builder. He likes being on his computer, being read to, watching the News, Weather Channel or the Food Network and talking on the phone to anyone who will listen to him. As a matter of fact, he likes talking to anyone, anywhere, and anytime anyone will listen to him! Having a serious side also, Matthew loves to sing whenev- er he can.
