THE VIDEO OR AUDIO RECORDING OF THIS PERFORMANCE BY ANY MEANS IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Around a year ago, we were just finishing the run of our last musical, Little Women, as the world began to shut down. Our students and faculty moved to online learning as we buckled down and hoped for a quick end to what we would soon come to know as the next year of our lives. Theatre has changed over these past 12 months and we have changed the way we make theatre, but I remain incredibly proud at what this department can do when we are faced with challenges. We have still put up a season of artistically relevant work that entertains and educates, and, to top it all off, we have done it safely.

This year our musical appears a bit different. Bright Star: Concert Version means that the script has been pared down in order to create a music-focused production that can be done in one act. The story remains, the characters remain, and the score remains, but the staging has been removed, or altered, to better work within the limits of social distancing and University safety protocols.

Every rehearsal, every meeting, and every showing are being presented safely and with the proper health considerations.

Bright Star: Concert Version is a show about new beginnings, and we hope this hour and a half of optimism allows you to welcome the idea that the sun is going to shine again … and that the next 12 months won’t resemble the last.

Enjoy the show, mask up, and stay safe. Joey Banks ’07
