In China, thousands oftraditional cultures and everyday practices have been absorbed into the intangible heritage system over the past decade, which is reshaping people's perception and engagement with everyday life and traditions. Intangible cultural heritage as an 'imported' concept has been highly localised and resituated in contemporary China. -

This study affirms the versatility of Cantonese opera as an art form that has been transmitted overseas and continued its presence and vibrancy throughout the history of Chinese immigration in Edmonton. -

Re-start and Re-discovery Few possess the vision of stage masters Sit Kok-sin (1904-1956) and Ma Si-tsang (1900-1964), who devoted their careers to rejuvenating the stage art, and advocated the crossing-over of Cantonese opera and film. Early Cantonese opera films borrowed directly the story plots and scores from their stage originals in order to appeal to a ready audience. But towards the end of the 1950s, opera masters Yam Kim-fai, Pak Suet-sin and others took the lead to refine the techniques so that their singing styles and stage arts may be preserved on celluloid. This marks the golden age of Cantonese opera film. (See pp 6-9) Cantonese Opera Film Retrospective (Revised edition, 2003) is the latest HKFA publication. The catalogue, out of print for some years now, was first published by the Hong Kong International Film Festival 16 years ago, devoting to the study of the history, development and genres of Cantonese opera and the origin of its screen appearance. Opera stars are featured in a profile section. This preliminary research, though, has all the makings of a real gem waiting to be further explored. We hope that further studies and research will be undertaken in future. Cantonese Opera Film Retrospective 'Ethical dilemmas' is a thought-provoking topic (Revised Edition, 2003) brought up by renowned film archivist Ray Published by HKFA Edmondson during his visit to the HKFA. And how do we operate in the real world? Our staff at the Resource Centre has some interesting anecdotes to share. Also, film conservation jargons are discussed from this issue onwards. -

Chang Cheh and His Never-Ending Quest for Change Director Chang Cheh (1924-2002) is almost a synonym with yang gang martial arts. We started to receive his manuscripts on Memoirs last year, at a rate of one article per week. To us, it was like a pilgrim's progress back to his martial arts world. Memoirs comprises 'Remembrances', 'Shaws Times', 'Chang's Film Companies', 'On Directing', 'On Self and Others' and 'Back to the Origin'. Chang did not have a happy childhood and he never reminisced on it. It was the idea of reaching his twilight years that urged Chang to write it down, for the first time, in 'Remembrances'. He and Shaws have had a long and fruitful relationship, and when he established the Chang's Film Co and the Chang He Motion Picture Co, Ltd, he gave many budding stars their first break. 'On Directing' was full of bittersweet stories, many a time did he come back from the brink. His yang gang martial arts world was actually a world of trendsetting attempts: Vengeance (1970) was his first action piece set in the Early Republican period, The Blood Brothers (1973) first adopted the Qing dynasty setting and Disciples of Shaolin (1975) established the 'Kung-fu Kid' image on the screen. Opportunities seized or missed became more vivid with time and the benefit of hindsight. When going over the research materials on him and preparing the filmography, it is clear that his works are interlaced with achievements and shortcomings, which all the more confirmed his importance in the development of martial arts films in Hong Kong.
