VOL. 53, NO. 1, ISSUE 219 - NEW SERIES 2020 Tambua (3,566/1938) arriving Sydney July 1963 (J.Y.Freeman) Tambua was built for the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. Ltd, Sydney, by Caledon Ship Building & Engineering Co., Dundee, in 1938, having been completed in July of that year. She was designed to carry bagged sugar in the holds and molasses in wing tanks. With a crew of 37, she traded Sydney, North Queensland ports, Fiji and New Zealand, back loading building materials, farming equipment, foodstuffs, railway tracks etc. She was renamed Maria Rosa when sold in 1968 and went to scrap under that name at Kaohsiung where she arrived 7 January 1973. PRINT POST PUBLICATION NUMBER 100003238 ISSN 0815-0052. All rights reserved. Across 25/26 January the amphibious ship HMNZS Canterbury attended the Ports of Auckland SeePort Festival 2020. Then on 28 January, in company with HMNZ Ships Wellio and Haa, the ship began a series of training and work-up exercises after the Christmas break. After three years of the design and build effort by HHI at the Ulsan shipyard, the new tanker Aotaroa began sea trials off the South Korean coast on 10 December ahead of her upcoming journey home to New Zealand. On 3 December the patrol vessel HMNZS Wellio in company with the Tuia 250 flotilla arrived in Wellington Harbour, including HMB Endeavour, Sirit of New Zeaand and a waka hourua. The national event celebrated New Zealand‟s voyaging heritage, and mark 250 years since the first onshore encounters between Māori and Captain James Cook and the crew of HMB Endeavour. -

The Black Bay Ships: Log • • • These logs emerged during the research into the history and voyages of two derelict old sailing ships beached at Black Bay in Southampton, Bermuda, the Emily A. Davies and the Norrköping (ex- Runnymede), all extracted from the pages of the daily shipping newspaper Lloyd’s List. The complete history and record of voyages of the Emily A. Davies and the Norrköping can be accessed here. • • • I also compiled reports of other interesting maritime casualties from that publication, from the years of the two vessels’ lifetimes. These reports, and others, can be read in the book Ate the Dog Yesterday - Maritime Casualties, Calamities and Catastrophes. Graham Faiella, author The Black Bay Ships: Log 111)1) Sunderland ssshipbuildingshipbuildinghipbuildinghipbuilding Sunderland, at the mouth of the River Wear (Wearside), on the northeast coast of England, was a shipbuilding centre at least since the first recorded mention of a yard there, Thomas Menville’s, at Hendon, in 1346. It was during the 19th, century, however, that Sunderland shipyards flourished. These were located mainly around the Sands area of Wearside. North Sands was the most densely populated in terms of number of yards. By 1840 there were 76 shipyards along the Sands at Sunderland. By the mid-1850s the local newspaper, The Sunderland Herald, was acclaiming Sunderland as “the greatest shipbuilding port in the world,” with around 3,000 ships a year being built. Most were sailing ships. But the number of steam-powered ships was increasing. The last sailing ship to come out of the Sunderland yards was in 1893. -

Ships and Boats: 1840-1950 Introductions to Heritage Assets Summary Historic England’s Introductions to Heritage Assets (IHAs) are accessible, authoritative, illustrated summaries of what we know about specific types of archaeological site, building, landscape or marine asset. Typically they deal with subjects which lack such a summary. This can either be where the literature is dauntingly voluminous, or alternatively where little has been written. Most often it is the latter, and many IHAs bring understanding of site or building types which are neglected or little understood. Many of these are what might be thought of as ‘new heritage’, that is they date from after the Second World War. This overview looks at ships and boats built after 1840. Principally drawing on archaeological, technological and historical sources, it describes vessels used on English inland and coastal waters and in the open sea. The evidence of wrecks and abandoned vessels is drawn on, as well as extant vessels. Also included is the early development of submarines. This guidance note has been written by Mark Dunkley and edited by Paul Stamper. Illegitimate Births in Gloucester, MA, 1855-1894
ILLEGITIMATE BIRTHS IN GLOUCESTER, MA, 1855 – 1894 The term “illegitimacy” is derived from the Latin illegitimus, meaning “not in accordance with the law.” A child is considered illegitimate when it is conceived and born outside of the regulatory sanctions of marriage. In order to facilitate genealogical research the Gloucester, Massachusetts, City Archive department is in the process of building a series of data bases of the births, marriages, and deaths that took place in Gloucester in the last half of the 19th century. As we entered birth information into this data base we wondered what became of those children identified as ‘illegitimate.’ The following is a result of those ruminations. Please note that the figures provided are not conclusive, as during the period 1860 to 1875 the legal status of the child was only sporadically noted in the official records – an interesting fact in and of itself. Also, at the time of this survey, deaths were only available in an easily searchable format for the years between 1851 and 1873. Obtaining the figures from 1874 to 1894 would have consumed more time than was available to this researcher. Nonetheless, certain conclusions can still be drawn from the easily obtainable records. Illegitimate births accounted for less than 1% of the overall births in Gloucester during the thirty-nine years spanned by the survey, and were equally divided between the sexes (108 boys and 107 girls). This figure seems extraordinarily low compared, for instance, to the year 2000 when approximately 26% of all births in Massachusetts were recorded as illegitimate. However, one must take into account various social factors.
