March 2013 Did We Get A Break? Contents I’m not sure that many of us did! The Scouts went to Jamboree in early Did We Get A Break? .................... 1 January at Maryborough. This was a HUGE event. I did some research on Swimming Carnival ........................ 2 Google and with a site attendance of 12500 kids and leaders, Jamboree Working Bee .................................... 2 was the 18th largest town in Queensland for 10 days. My family was fortunate enough to visit on one the visitor’s day. With grandparents in New Equipment .............................. 2 tow, we walked a reasonable area of the site. The size was impressive The Stork Has Arrived At BHS ......... 2 and we only saw a small part of it. You really don’t appreciate the scale Trailer ................................................ 3 until you see it. Congratulations must go to the organising committee, it has to be an extremely large undertaking. Group Shirts ..................................... 3 Clean Up Australia Day ................. 3 There was also a couple of fundraising events held. December saw us The Scouting Way .......................... 4 attend the Burleigh Heads Rotary Christmas Carols (covered in the last newsletter). January was the Single Fin Boardriders competition. This is a Jamboree 2013............................... 7 huge weekend for us. We had over 30 people help out over for breakfast AJ2013 – A Leader Perspective. .. 7 and lunch on Saturday and Sunday. Too many names to list, but thank Joeys ................................................. 9 you to each one of you for making it such a successful weekend. We raised over $6500 from both events. That is a great effort. We are in the Red Wolf Pack ................................ 9 process of purchasing new equipment with some of the funds. We also Wednesday Scouts ...................... 10 received a $1500 grant from our local councillor Greg Betts which is Thursday Scouts ............................ 11 greatly appreciated and already spent (see next page)! Rovers ............................................. 12 Jay, Sallie and Troy have made a successful transition to scouts. Their Swimming Carnival Photos ......... 12 reputation for a well run program and good humour has seen the troop Agoonoree 2012 .......................... 13 grow to 38 kids already! However, this has left a hole in Cubs. Nick and Katie have also decided to end their leadership role in Cubs. This means Friends Of Federation Walk ........ 14 we are left with a lot of Cubs but not enough leaders. We need Events ............................................. 14 assistance! We don’t expect to have one person step up and take on Contacts ........................................ 14 the role of super leader. If we can get a handful of parents working together, the role is not so difficult and very rewarding. James Batho has signed on as an assistance leader for Monday and Yvonne Place has been helping on Tuesday. If you think you can help, then please contact Roland or Anthony. Wombat will be stepping back as leader of Thursday night. He has done a great job with Thursday scouts and I am pleased Luke had the benefit of his leadership over many years. I am just as pleased to hear that Burleigh Heads Bullant will be stepping into the position. He has worked with Wombat for Scout Group a number of years but will also bring his own skills to the position. I look 32 Stephens Street forward to seeing how the group performs. They have already had a Burleigh Heads. great start with one of their patrols finishing in the top ten at Butterfly. PO Box 69 Since we have lots of new scouts so Roland has provided an article that Burleigh Heads Q 4220 outlines the scouting way. This will be useful to new parents and a reminder to existing parents of how things work in scouts! www.bhscouts.com.au [email protected] Regards Phone 07 55 350 744 Jeff Butterworth (Numbat) Mobile 0416 257 093 Burleigh Heads Scout Group Swimming Carnival At the start of Term 1 for 2013 we held a group swimming carnival at Marymount School. We had a beautiful sunny day, just perfect for swimming. We had a good attendance, mainly from the scouts. Anthony organised the BBQ (would we ever get fed if it wasn’t for Anthony?!) Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and it was a great way to get everyone pumped for the term ahead. Hopefully we will have another one towards the end of the year and we will be able to organise more events across the sections! At least it’s a soft landing if you fall! Ride ‘em cowboy! Working Bee It’s time for another working bee. Camp Kallaroo and the den need a good clean out and the gardens need to be weeded. The working bee will be held on Sunday 16 June! Remember, many hands make light work! We will have attendance forms at the start of the term. Please make sure you sign up, even if it’s only for a couple of hours. This is where our children play and learn, let’s make sure it’s a pleasant and safe environment for them! New Equipment We recently received a donation for $1500 from Cr Greg Betts. Greg is a great supporter of Burleigh Heads Scouts and we appreciated the grants he makes to us on a regular basis. We have already purchased 10 new Squall tents for the scouts. These are slightly larger than the existing orange hike tents, which will be appreciated by the older scouts. By maintaining a mix of tent sizes, scouts can choose between comfort and weight! Working out where the poles go in the new tents! The Stork Has Arrived At BHS On Monday the 11th March our Group Leader (Wallaroo), AKA Roland Franz and his partner Kaylene MacDonald, welcomed their second child, a baby boy, weighing 2.45 Kg (5lb 6oz for the oldies) to the world. Wallaroo says they are yet to come up with a scout name. Congratulations for the up and coming Joey to follow Olandaylene, their daughter of 2 1/2 years. Burleigh Heads Scout Group Trailer This is how good our camp trailers look when given a lick of paint and some signage. Pretty slick huh?. We still have another trailer that needs to be painted. However, we’d like some help. Seems to be the same people all the time. Is there anyone who can spare a few hours to help mask up the trailer and get it painted? If so contact Anthony 0416 257 093. Looks like new! Group Shirts Just a reminder that we have group shirts available for sale for $40. We have lots of favourable comments on these when we wear them to other camps or just out and about in general. We have a variety of sizes available. Just ask your leaders about them or contact Jeff or Anthony. Clean Up Australia Day Good looking! Shirts that is.... It was pouring rain with howling winds early Sunday morning. The text messages started coming through at 8:00am "is it still on?" Quoll's response was "Yep, we'll be there at 10:00am." It continued to rain heavily until 9:00ish and the skies seemed to clear for a short period. The Scouts started to arrive well prepared with raincoats and gloves ready for action. We had a great turnout from both Scout Troops and the Scouts were partnered up with the Cubs that came along . We had 7 Leaders participate from Scouts and Cubs . The parents and Scout siblings got involved, great to see. Bed looks like the better option! Andrew Place spotted a carpet python in Headlands during the Clean Up activities. The Scouts love to see the parents and Leaders getting involved with Community Activities like this. Some returned from the Headlands with tyres and a wheel axle and 20 bags were filled. Well done Burleigh Heads Scout Group. We had some very wet Scouts after the first down pour, but they all soldiered on and got the job done regardless. We had a total of 33 participants for the day and the sausage sizzle was well received. Galah was challenged by the wind and rain, however everyone got a sausage. Quoll Its only rain! The scouts found a bit more than rubbish! Working hard Just a little windy! The scouts found a bit more than rubbish! Burleigh Heads Scout Group The Scouting Way This information sheet is for the benefit of new members and some existing who are seeking to have a better understanding of how the scout section operates in relation to ‐ Our Scouting family. This is not an official statement on the part of the Scout Association of Australia, Queensland Branch but more particularly an interpretation of scouting as it occurs at Burleigh Heads in compliance with the Qld Branch Instructions, Policy and Rules. Scout Section In relation to the scout section two basic principles apply; 1. Learning by doing. 2. The Patrol system. Learning by doing As it says, the scout section is all about learning through experience. This means that Leaders or parents DO NOT put up tents, pack bags, make sure things are not left behind or that all things necessary are in place. The exception is in the event of safety issues only. In the principle of learning by doing, scouts are guided by their Patrol Leader to learn what is needed, appropriate or expected and this relates to behaviour, knowledge and achievement, personal safety, responsibility for others and the environment equally. Scouts, through a controlled environment of the watchful eye and guidance of the Section Leader’s are ALLOWED TO MAKE MISTAKES AND LEARN FROM THEM, so they themselves gain the necessary knowledge, which combined with maturity will eventually be able to adequately lead a Patrol of 6 – 8 scouts through the experience of acquiring these skills in return.
