Cd Review Adele Live at the Royal Albert Hall****1/2 Recensie: DVD | cd review Adele live at the Royal Albert Hall****1/2 foto © XL Recordings Recensie: 2011 was hét jaar van Adele. Wie ons wil tegenspreken mag dat steeds. Alleen al in de cijfers zal die moedige ziel ongelijk krijgen. 29 weken stond haar fenomenale "21“-album op de eerste plaats in de charts. Het was het best verkochte album van 2011. Nu al mogen we gerust van een klassieker spreken. Nog opvallender: de Britse trekt ook het laken in de lijst van best verkochte singles volledig naar zich toe. Maar liefst 3 songs die op haar naam staan, haalden de top 5 in het jaaroverzicht. "Rolling in the deep“ stond 4 weken op 1 en 48 weken in de hitparade en eindigt daarmee op zilver na Gotye's "Somebody that I used to know“ dat het goud binnenhaalt als best verkochte single van dit jaar. Adeles "Set fire to the rain“ stond twee weken op 1 en verbleef 36 weken in de charts. Goed voor brons in de lijst van best verkochte singles van 2011. "Someone like you“ tenslotte is goed voor een vijfde plaats in dat jaaroverzicht. Een boerenjaar voor distributeur V2 Records noemen we dat. Van de vele optredens ( en wellicht ook een verkeerd stemgebruik) kreeg de Britse last van heesheid én diende ze een operatie aan de stembanden te ondergaan. Haar najaarstour werd dus ingekort om medische redenen. De fans die teleurgesteld werden, hoeven echter niet te treuren. Op 22 september werd Adeles optreden in The Royal Albert Hall in Londen opgenomen. Daar is nu een DVD van uit. Een pareltje dat zo in beeld gebracht werd dat het beslist de tand des tijds zal overleven. Tijdloos noemen ze dat. Vloeiende camerabewegingen, met veel horizontale en verticale travelling terwijl er van een vaag beeld naar een scherp wordt overgegaan, lifting, pans, close ups, full colour-kleurgebruik, dan weer sepia, geeft elk nummer tijdens de concertregistratie de juiste sfeer mee. Daarnaast is er nog de belichting, met vele lampenkappen, die ons in de toch wel grote zaal een huiskamergevoel bezorgt. Sober, degelijk en classy. "Royal Albert fucking Hall“ schreeuwt Adele uit alsof ze het zelf niet kan geloven na opener "Hometown Glory“. "Ik weet dat het hier een sjieke zaal is en dat dit soort taal hier niet hoort. Ik zal mijn best doen“ zegt de zangeres op zo'n toon dat ze meteen de lachers op haar hand krijgt. The Spice Girls, Enrique Iglesias, de Proms en ook Alicia Keys zag ze in de zaal. En nu is het aan Adkins zelf om het podium op te gaan voor een anderhalf uur durend optreden om duimen en vingers van te likken. Het idee rond "Turning tables“ ontstond in een Chinees restaurant in New York, geeft de Engelse mee. "21“ ademt melancholie en ook verdriet uit. De rode draad: haar relatie met haar vriend die op de klippen liep. De man waarvan ze dacht dat die haar levenspartner zou worden.   Wanneer Adele "Take it all“ – het eerste nummer dat ze voor "21“ schreef - aankondigt, zegt ze dat haar relatie gedoemd was om te mislukken. "He was an asshole, I'm a bitch“ laat ze ontvallen. "Dit kon gewoon niet werken.“ Haar vriend verliet haar trouwens enkele weken nadat ie dit nummer -dat gospelinvloeden heeft- hoorde, geeft ze nog mee. "Take it all“ zal ze echter een tweede keer inzetten na een "shit“-noot. Het enige minpuntje van deze live dvd die verder de perfectie benadert. Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me", The SteelDrivers "If It Hadn't Been For Love", The Cures "Lovesong“ en Bob Dylans "Make you feel my love“ covert ze. Die laatste draagt ze op aan Amy Winehouse. Adkins vraagt het publiek om massaal de gsm's boven te halen zodat de te vroeg gestorven zangeres hen uit de hemel zou kunnen zien. Een spiegelbol zorgt voor extra lichteffect. Kippenvel en wat een prachtig arrangement met Miles Robertson aan de toetsen en Tim Van der Kuil aan de lap steel. "If It Hadn't Been For Love“ van The Steeldrivers mag dan weer folky klinken wanneer Tim Van der Kuil de banjo bespeelt. Tijdens "My same“ horen we Miles Robertson op de melodica en klinkt de bas van Sam Dixon heerlijk door. Pure weelde aan klanken en instrumenten krijgen we dus voorgeschoteld. Of het nu de twaalf strijkers zijn die de melodie mogen bepalen tijdens "Set fire to the rain“, "Turning Tables“ of "Don't you remember“ bijvoorbeeld, of wanneer de percussie de bovenhand haalt in de "fuck off“-song "Rumour has it“, of Robertson Adele solo begeleidt aan het klavier tijdens "Someone like you“ : elk doel wordt bereikt. In zijn puurste vorm, blijft elk nummer overeind. Op die laatste song had Adele trouwens een tijdje gebroed. Ze vond dat "21“ nog niet hét nummer had dat "Hometown Glory“ op haar vorige album "19“ was. De song belichaamt volledig het gevoel van Adele toen ze aan de plaat werkte die ondertussen goed is voor meer dan tien miljoen verkochte exemplaren wereldwijd. Ze moest leren omgaan met het verlies van iemand waarvan ze hield en die (mede daardoor) ook haar leven veranderde, niet alleen op privé vlak, maar nu dus ook professioneel. "21“ was hét doorbraakalbum voor de zangeres. Adele koestert geen bittere gevoelens meer, zo liet ze optekenen. Maar toch is ze zeer geëmotioneerd wanneer het voltallige publiek het refrein zingt van "Someone like you“. De Britse grapt uiteraard ook. Over haar tamelijk recente blonde lokken: "Ik heb nog geen verandering in mijn gedrag gemerkt. Hoewel? Blondjes hebben meer fun, niet?“ waarna ze later stilstaat bij enkele vriendinnen die in de zaal zitten. 1 Fan kreeg trouwens een brief die de zangeres voor haar schreef mee naar huis omdat ze voor een tv interview op die stoel 113 zat. De vrouwelijke fan leek zeer enthousiast. Mooi is het om zien dat een kindje dichter bij de mama kruipt wanneer ze The Cures "Lovesong“ brengt. (May 2011) Kimberly O‘Dell Cox, B.A., The University of North Carolina at Greensboro; M.A., East Carolina University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Sally Robinson This dissertation focuses on novels and films produced in the second half of the twentieth century that critique traditional notions of home in contemporary America to expand on the large body of work on American domesticity in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These texts demonstrate the damaging power and overwhelming force of conventional domesticity, complicating traditional notions of home by speaking from positions of marginality. In each text, key figures react to limited ideologies of domesticity that seek to maintain sameness, silence, and servitude by enacting embodied resistance to domestic entrapment.
