University of Cape Town BOLUS LIBRARY 1 ABSTRACT The perennation of orchids is poorly understood, in particular that of the Orchidoidae. The understanding of perennation in the Orchidoidae is important because the root-stem tuberoid .is used as the one character defining the Orchidoidae as a monophyletic group. The root-stem tuberoid has never been examined for variation before. This project focuses on perennial growth in the Diseae in order to study the structbre and function of the root stem tuberoid in relation tp other organs and to contribute to the understanding of Orchidoid phylogeny. , INTRODUCTION Host te1perate monocotyledons have evolved underground resting or perennating organs for the climatically unfavourable season (Holttum 1955). A period of underground existence may allow a plant to escape unfavourable conditions, to counter environmental uncertainty, and to build reserves for flowering episodes (Calvo 1990). This is especially evident in the temperate members of the Orchidaceae and is made possible through sympodial growth· (Withnerj1974). Not .all temperate orchids have a resting period although they do have sympodial growth and do perennate. -

CRAVEN* and P VORSTER** Keywords: Namibia, phytogeography, plant endemism ABSTRACT Species richness, endemism and areas that are rich in both species and endemic species were assessed and mapped for Namibia. High species diversity corresponds with zones where species overlap. These are particularly obvious where there are altitudinal variations and in high-lying areas. The endemic flora o f Namibia is rich and diverse. An estimated 16% of the total plant species in Namibia are endemic to the country. Endemics are in a wide variety o f families and sixteen genera are endemic. Factors that increase the likelihood o f endemism are mountains, hot deserts, diversity o f substrates and microclimates. The distribution of plants endemic to Namibia was arranged in three different ways. Firstly, based on a grid count with the phytogeographic value of the species being equal, overall endemism was mapped. Secondly, range restricted plant species were mapped individually and those with congruent distribution patterns were combined. Thirdly, localities that are important for very range-restricted species were identified. The resulting maps of endemism and diversity were compared and found to correspond in many localities. When overall endemism is compared with overall diversity, rich localities may consist o f endemic species with wide ranges. The other methods identify important localities with their own distinctive complement of species. INTRODUCTION (1994). Witkowski i ABSTRACT In this study I investigated the reproductive biology and pollination ecology of Aloe peglerae, an endangered endemic succulent species of the Magaliesberg Mountain Range in South Africa. The aim was to determine the pollination system of A. peglerae, the effects of flowering plant density on plant reproduction and the suitable microhabitat conditions for this species. Aloe peglerae possesses floral traits that typically conform to the bird-pollination syndrome. Pollinator exclusion experiments showed that reproduction is enhanced by opportunistic avian nectar-feeders, mainly the Cape Rock-Thrush (Monticola rupestris) and the Dark- capped Bulbul (Pycnonotus tricolor). Insect pollinators did not contribute significantly to reproductive output. Small-mammals were observed visiting flowers at night, however, the importance of these visitors as pollinators was not quantified in this study. Interannual variation in flowering patterns dictated annual flowering plant densities in the population. The first flowering season represented a typical mass flowering event resulting in high seed production, followed by a second low flowering year of low seed production. -

We report here for the first time the occurrence of a member of the genus in China, Stillingia lineata subsp. pacifica. The distribution of the genus in China is apparently narrow, known only from Pingzhou and Wanzhou Islands of the Wanshan Archipelago in the South China Sea, which is close to the Pearl River estuary. This study updates our knowledge on the geographic distribution of the genus, and provides new palynological data as well. MISGUND ORCHARDS ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT 2014 Grey Rhebok Pelea capreolus Prepared for Mr Wayne Baldie By Language of the Wilderness Foundation Trust In March 2002 a baseline environmental audit was completed by Conservation Management Services. This foundational document has served its purpose. The two (2) recommendations have been addressed namely; a ‘black wattle control plan’ in conjunction with Working for Water Alien Eradication Programme and a survey of the fish within the rivers was also addressed. Furthermore updated species lists have resulted (based on observations and studies undertaken within the region). The results of these efforts have highlighted the significance of the farm Misgund Orchards and the surrounds, within the context of very special and important biodiversity. Misgund Orchards prides itself with a long history of fruit farming excellence, and has strived to ensure a healthy balance between agricultural priorities and our environment. Misgund Orchards recognises the need for a more holistic and co-operative regional approach towards our environment and needs to adapt and design a more sustainable approach. The context of Misgund Orchards is significant, straddling the protected areas Formosa Forest Reserve (Niekerksberg) and the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve. A formidable mountain wilderness with World Heritage Status and a Global Biodiversity Hotspot (See Map 1 overleaf). The environmental significance of this cannot be overstated – essentially creating a protected area from the ocean into the desert of the Klein-karoo, a traverse of 8 biomes, a veritable ‘garden of Eden’. -

Mothers, markets and medicine The role of traditional herbal medicine in primary women and child health care in the Dar es Salaam region, Tanzania Hanna Lindh Degree project in biology, Bachelor of science, 2015 Examensarbete i biologi 15 hp till kandidatexamen, 2015 Biology Education Centre, Uppsala University Supervisors: Sarina Veldman and Hugo de Boer 1 Abstract Traditional medicine is still the most common primary healthcare used in Tanzania, especially among women. The ethnobotanical studies performed in Tanzania have not explored women’s traditional medicine, with the result that we do not know that much about it, including if women’s usage of medicinal plants create a threat against the medicinal flora’s biodiversity or not. Field studies consisting of interviews and collections of medicinal plants were carried out in the Dar es Salaam region in Tanzania before identifying the collected specimens by DNA barcoding, literature and morphology in Uppsala, Sweden. The 33 informants belonged to 15 different ethnic groups and 79% of them had migrated to Dar es Salaam. A total of 249 plant species were mentioned for women’s healthcare and 140 for children’s healthcare. The medicinal plants frequently reported as used for women’s health and childcare during structured interviews and free-listing exercises were Senna occidentalis/ Cassia abbreviata, Zanthoxylum sp., Clausena anisata, Acalypha ornata and Ximenia sp. The most salient uses of medicinal plants by women were during pregnancy, childbirth, menstruation, to induce abortion, and for cleansing infants and treating convulsions in children. Most of the fresh specimens were collected from disturbance vegetation. The informants having most interview answers in common were the market vendors, healers and herbalists and they were the only informants that mentioned species listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
