The Legacy and Traditions of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby The Kentucky Derby The Kentucky Derby has taken place annually in Louis- ville, Kentucky since 1875. It was started by Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. at his track he called Churchill Downs, and it has run continuously since that first race. This first jewel of the Triple Crown has produced famous winners, with thirteen of these winners gaining that Triple Crown title. Lewis limited the Derby to only 3-year old horses. The race has evolved and grown over time and has changed since its first running, remaining an important event for more than a century. Through the study of the Derby’s influential historic traditions, notable winners and horse farms in Kentucky, and its profound cultural TABLE OF CONTENTS impact, this program will identify and explore these dif- Background and History…..2 ferent aspects that all contribute to the excitement and legacy of the “most exciting two minutes in sports.” Curriculum Standards…..3 Traditions ................ 4-8 Triple Crown ............ 9 Derby Winners ........ 10-11 Notable Horse Farms….12-13 Significant Figures…...15 Bibliography………….16 Image list…………….17-18 Derby Activities…….19-22 To replicate the races he witnessed in Europe, Meri- wether Lewis Clark Jr., the grandson of explorer Wil- liam Clark, created three races in the United States that resembled those he’d attended in Europe. The first meet was in May of 1875. Family ties to the horse racing world led Clark to his purchase of what would become Churchill Downs, named after his uncles, John and Henry Churchill in 1883.

(Sea Hero, Thunder Gulch, Giacomo and Mine That Bird were all fourth). 41 Kentucky Derby winners won or placed in their final race leading up to the Kentucky Derby. This tidbit of knowledge helps narrow the horses with a legitimate chance from those who don’t are hopelessly over their heads. Pedigree is the next step to figuring out which of these contestants to keep on your Derby list. It is essential to determine between the horses that will love ten furlongs, those who could finish in the money and the ones that couldn’t get the distance with a guided missile strapped around their girth. Just because a horse ekes out a win at nine furlongs doesn’t mean he has enough gas in the tank to keep up a full out run for an additional furlong. It is generally accepted that a horse’s damsire and female family impart stamina and class. This is the most important aspect in determining if your Derby hopeful can handle the distance. In the last eleven out of twelve years, every Kentucky Derby winner’s sire or damsire’s daughters had previously produced a stakes winner at 1 ¼ miles.

He’s also the current consensus pick as top 3-year-old. This Brad Cox-trained colt has done everything right in two 2021 starts. He romped home in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn Park and then out-fought a game, pace scenario- aided Highly Motivated at Keeneland to win the Grade 2 Blue Grass by a neck. He races a bit off the pace early, but can quickly reach contention when prompted. He has won by as much as four and one-quarter lengths and by as little as a neck. Last September, he broke his maiden first time out going six furlongs at Churchill Downs, so you know he likes the track. Jockey Luis Saez seeks redemption aboard this colt for the disappointment and criticism the rider endured following the disqualification of his mount Maximum Security from first to 17th in the 2019 Kentucky Derby. Trainer Brad Cox won last season’s Eclipse Award as the nation’s top trainer. HOT ROD CHARLIE: Ever since stretching out to two turns on the main track and adding blinkers, this son of Preakness winner Oxbow has been a tiger. His first race under those particular circumstances came in the fourth start of his career and resulted in a one-mile maiden score at Santa Anita in October.

Old Friends Birdstone 2001 b H Grindstone – Dear Birdie (Storm Bird) 2004 Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone raced as a homebred for Marylou Whitney Stables. Trained by Nick Zito, he won his first start with Edgar Prado riding and capped off a lightly raced two year old campaign with a victory in the Champagne Stakes (G1) with Jerry Bailey up. At three he competed in the 2004 Kentucky Derby but skipped the Preakness. On Belmont day he and Edgar Prado settled in toward the back, sat chilly while Derby and Preakness took the lead, then just when it looked like Smarty might win the Triple Crown, Birdstone came flying in the final stretch to win the Belmont. That summer he accomplished a similar feat in a rainy 2004 Travers Stakes (G1). He retired with five wins in nine starts and $1,575,600 earnings. At stud at Gainesway Farm, Birdstone sired 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, 2009 Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird, 2015 Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) winner Noble Bird and other stakes winners. He retired to Old Friends in August 2020. Old Friends is grateful to John Hendrickson for entrusting us with the care of superlative racehorse and sire of classic winners, Birdstone.
