Such variation can impact fitness by affecting the way spiders are perceived by relevant observers such as prey (i.e. by resembling flower signals as visual lures) and predators (i.e. by disrupting search image formation). Verrucosa arenata is an orb-weaving spider that presents colour variation in a conspicuous triangular pattern on the dorsal part of the abdomen. This pattern has predominantly white or yellow colouration, but also reflects light in the UV part of the spectrum. We quantified colour variation in V. arenata from images obtained using a full spectrum digital camera. We obtained cone catch quanta and calculated chromatic and achromatic contrasts for the visual systems of Drosophila melanogaster and Apis mellifera. Cluster analyses of the colours of the triangular patch resulted in the formation of six and three statistically different groups in the colour space of D. melanogaster and A. mellifera, respectively. Thus, no continuous colour variation was found. -

However, investigations of behaviours that could reduce the probability of sexual cannibalism are few. We examine the hypothesis that male wolf spiders, Lycosa tarantula (L.) (Araneae, Lycosidae), decides to approach females in periods when they are less dangerous. Males of this species approach females for mating during the daytime only. While attending females, males stay farther from the female’s burrow at night than during the daytime. In field experiments, we offered a grasshopper (typical prey) or a male L. tarantula to females at night and during the day, and our findings show that the diel changes in the male’s approaching behaviour matches diurnal changes in the female’s tendency to attack both the grasshopper and the male spider. These findings support our hypothesis that a diel change in female responsiveness to prey has been a selection pressure influencing the evolution of male approach behaviour in a sexually cannibalistic species. Dunlop3, Brian J. Knecht4 and Thomas A. Hegna4 Abstract Background: Arachnids are a highly successful group of land-dwelling arthropods. They are major contributors to modern terrestrial ecosystems, and have a deep evolutionary history. Whip spiders (Arachnida, Amblypygi), are one of the smaller arachnid orders with ca. 190 living species. Here we restudy one of the oldest fossil representatives of the group, Graeophonus anglicus Pocock, 1911 from the Late Carboniferous (Duckmantian, ca. 315 Ma) British Middle Coal Measures of the West Midlands, UK. Using X-ray microtomography, our principal aim was to resolve details of the limbs and mouthparts which would allow us to test whether this fossil belongs in the extant, relict family Paracharontidae; represented today by a single, blind species Paracharon caecus Hansen, 1921. Results: Tomography reveals several novel and significant character states for G. anglicus; most notably in the chelicerae, pedipalps and walking legs. These allowed it to be scored into a phylogenetic analysis together with the recently described Paracharonopsis cambayensis Engel & Grimaldi, 2014 from the Eocene (ca. 52 Ma) Cambay amber, and Kronocharon prendinii Engel & Grimaldi, 2014 from Cretaceous (ca. 99 Ma) Burmese amber. We recovered relationships of the form ((Graeophonus (Paracharonopsis + Paracharon)) + (Charinus (Stygophrynus (Kronocharon (Charon (Musicodamon + Paraphrynus)))))). This tree largely reflects Peter Weygoldt’s 1996 classification with its basic split into Paleoamblypygi and Euamblypygi lineages; we were able to score several of his characters for the first time in fossils. -

The Namibian Hoggicosa exigua Roewer, 1960 is transferred to Hogna, Hogna exigua (Roewer, 1960) comb. nov. A phylogenetic analysis including nine Hoggicosa species, 11 lycosine species from Australia and four from overseas, with Arctosa cinerea Fabricius, 1777 as outgroup, supported the monophyly of Hoggicosa, with a larger distance between the epigynum anterior pockets compared to the width of the posterior transverse part. The analysis found that an unusual sexual dimorphism for wolf spiders (females more colourful than males), evident in four species of Hoggicosa, has evolved multiple times. Hoggicosa are burrowing lycosids, several constructing doors from sand or debris, and are predominantly found in semi-arid to arid regions of Australia. -

Medical History, 1979, 23: 404-425. TARANTISM by JEAN FOGO RUSSELL* INTRODUCTION TARANTISM IS A disorder characterized by dancing which classically follows the bite of a spider and is cured by music. It may involve one or many persons, and was first described in the eleventh century, but during the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries many outbreaks were observed and recorded, notably in southern Italy. There is no doubt that it is a hysterical phenomenon closely related to the dancing mania which occurred in Europe in the Middle Ages and with which it is often confused, but unlike the dancing mania it is initiated by a specific cause, real or imagined, and occurs during the summer when the spiders are about. Music as a cure for tarantism was first used in Apulia, a southern state of Italy, where the folk dances would seem to have developed. The music used in the cure is a quick, lively, uninterrupted tune with short repetitive phrases played with increasing tempo and called a tarantella. The word "tarantella" has two meanings: the first is the name of the tune and the second is the name of the accompanying dance which is defined as: "A rapid, whirling southern Italian dance popular with the peasantry since the fifteenth century when it was supposed to be the sovereign remedy for tarantism".11 The dance form still exists, as Raffe2 points out: "The Tarantella is danced in Sicily on every possible occasion, to accompaniment of hand clapping, couples improvising their own figures. It is found in Capri and Sorrento, and in Apulia it is known as the Taranda. -

Evidence for reproductive senescence in invertebrate natural populations is scant probably because most groups are short-lived or because they lack natural markers of age. 2. Lycosa tarantula (L.) (the Mediterranean Tarantula) (Araneae, Lycosidae) is a slowly ageing burrowing wolf spider, in which females can reproduce for two consecu- tive seasons. Females in their first reproductive season (1Y) can easily be distinguished from females in their second reproductive season (2Y) because the lack of pilosity in the latter. 3. The diet of 1Y and 2Y females was supplemented and their reproductive per- formance was compared with that of control, non-food supplemented females. The predictions were that senescent 2Y females would show a worse reproductive performance than 1Y females, and that they would not be able to improve their per- formance relative to 1Y after food supplementation. 4. The predictions were met. Older females gained less mass, laid smaller egg sacs, pro- duced fewer spiderlings and, if food supplemented, invested a smaller fraction of their mass in egg sacs. Although 2Y females foraged less actively than younger females, 2Y did not improve their performance relative to 1Y following food supplementation. This pattern of changes provides evidence for reproductive senescence in a natural spider population. In the Mediterranean tarantula, Lycosa tarantula (Linnaeus, 1758), spiderlings disperse in two bouts, with approximately half of the spiderlings in the population dispersing before winter and the other half remaining in the burrow with their mothers until the onset of spring. Humphreys (1983) hypothesized that one advantage of early dispersal relative to late dispersal is that, after the winter, early dispersers will be several instars larger than late dispersers. If this is the case, we expect to find a bimodal distribution of spider sizes after the winter.
