I Know I Am Someone: Michael Jackson, Thriller, and American Identity by Sara Tenenbaum B.A. in American Studies, May 2006, Brandeis University A Thesis submitted to The Faculty of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences of George Washington University in partial fulfillment of the degree requirements for the degree of Master of Arts May 15, 2011 Thesis Directed by James A. Miller Professor of English and American Studies © Copyright 2011 by Sara Tenenbaum All rights reserved ii Abstract of Thesis "I Know I Am Someone: Michael Jackson, Thriller, and American Identity" This thesis addresses the cultural phenomenon surrounding Michael Jackson's 1982 album Thriller and uses it as a lens through which to view and analyze the development of a distinct American, primarily youth, identity in 1983 and 1984. It is structured using a three-prong approach that first analyzes the sonic work of the music of Thriller, second explores the characteristics of Michaelmania and the youth identity being constructed within the Michael Jackson pop explosion, and third analyzes the backlash from both the white and African American communities against Jackson in that time to illuminate his subversion and danger to the status quo. I argue that Jackson's act of profound crossover during the Thriller era triggered within the American youth an equally profound act of identity formation that transcended racial stratification in America's past and created a foundational part of our contemporary identity that moves slightly beyond America's troubled racial history. Using both the voices of his fans and his critics to tease out the work his person and his music did in the early 1980's, I advocate we keep Jackson and his work foregrounded in our study of popular culture in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, as his pop explosion fundamentally and permanently effected how Americans understand ourselves and our relations with each other.

  • The Ripple Effect
The Ripple Effect Press Kit The Ripple Effect examines the struggle to keep arts alive for inner city children and reveals the power of arts education to educate the heart and impact schools and the lives of those living in poverty. Synopsis: Grammy-award winner and first time director, Bunny Hull, shines a light on the value of arts in education. The Ripple Effect follows the unique approach of Dream A World Education as professional artists provide arts programs to children in early elementary grades, parents and teachers in some of the poorest areas of Los Angeles. The film highlights the lack of funding, why the arts are so critical to the education of our youth and school communities, and how the benefits of the arts go far beyond what we’ve imagined. As we hear from immigrant parents, educators, and administrators, we find out why the investment in educating children’s hearts is as important as investing in educating their minds, and how the effect causes a ripple that is felt by families, school culture, and ultimately the entire community. • Where Was Wargames Filmed
Where was wargames filmed Continue So I realize I'm like one of maybe ten holdouts left in the world, but I still have an AOL account. I know, I know - 1995 called, it wants its email address back. I think I'm finally ready to give up, though, because the search function right. Up. Sucks. Previously it was great - I could enter a keyword I knew had been written in a particular correspondence, and up would pop the exact email I was looking for. I used to use it regularly when I wrote my posts. I can't always remember the exact process behind each site search (how I came to start looking for a place, how I found out a specific detail, etc.), so in the past I would look back through old emails sent to various sources (like Mike, from MovieShotsLA, or Owen, from the When Write Is Wrong blog) to update my memory. And AOL always came through! That's no longer the case. When he woke up last Sunday, Grim Cheaper announced that he wanted to go to Big Bear Lake for a few days to play in the snow. So we literally tossed some items of clothes in a bag and went straight up the mountain. It was such a last-minute trip that I didn't even remember bringing my good camera - or my stalking notebook. It wasn't until we checked into our hotel that I remembered wargames had been filmed in the area. Early last year, Owen and I tracked down the cabin where Falken (John Wood) lived in the 1983 film, but unfortunately I didn't have my notes available to check the address.

Rio Conchos was in many ways a reworking of 1961’s The Comancheros (FSMCD Vol. 2, No. 6, music by Elmer Bernstein), but it lacked the buoyant presence of John Wayne and told a far darker and more nihilistic tale of social outcasts thrown together on a mission to find a hidden community of Apache gun-runners. It was the dawn of a new breed of grittier, more psychologically hon- est westerns, and Jerry Goldsmith was the perfect composer to provide these arid and violent tales with a new musical voice. Goldsmith had already scored several westerns before Rio Conchos, including the acclaimed contemporary west- ern Lonely Are the Brave. But Rio Conchos saw Goldsmith marshal- ing his skills at writing complex yet melodically vibrant action music, with several early highlights of his musical output contained by Jerry Goldsmith within. The composer’s title music is characteristically spare and One-Time Pressing of 3,000 Copies folksy, belying the savage intensity of what is to follow, yet his main theme effortlessly forms the backbone for the score’s violent set- pieces and provides often soothing commentary on the decency and nobility buried beneath the flinty surfaces of the film’s reluc- tant heroes.

But that doesn't mean his creative energy goes to waste. In a desperate attempt to find his talent, he turns to crime, albeit in his own idiosyncratic and non- violent way. In this inventive comedy, three friends (and a bank teller) have their lives turned upside down when one of them realizes that larceny might be his best skill. Long Synopsis The day before his 25th birthday, Max Solomon faces the awful truth that he will never be a writer. In a desperate attempt to find his next artistic endeavor, he turns to crime and pulls off a great feat. His newfound talent ignites a passion within him and sends his two best friends on their own journeys. Tommy, the slacker, is inspired to enter the job market, and Dave, only too aware of the consequences of grand theft, becomes obsessed with writing the perfect apology letter. It may not be the time to fall in love, but when Max meets Lucy, it's decision time.
