  • Master's Thesis
I Know I Am Someone: Michael Jackson, Thriller, and American Identity by Sara Tenenbaum B.A. in American Studies, May 2006, Brandeis University A Thesis submitted to The Faculty of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences of George Washington University in partial fulfillment of the degree requirements for the degree of Master of Arts May 15, 2011 Thesis Directed by James A. Miller Professor of English and American Studies © Copyright 2011 by Sara Tenenbaum All rights reserved ii Abstract of Thesis "I Know I Am Someone: Michael Jackson, Thriller, and American Identity" This thesis addresses the cultural phenomenon surrounding Michael Jackson's 1982 album Thriller and uses it as a lens through which to view and analyze the development of a distinct American, primarily youth, identity in 1983 and 1984. It is structured using a three-prong approach that first analyzes the sonic work of the music of Thriller, second explores the characteristics of Michaelmania and the youth identity being constructed within the Michael Jackson pop explosion, and third analyzes the backlash from both the white and African American communities against Jackson in that time to illuminate his subversion and danger to the status quo. I argue that Jackson's act of profound crossover during the Thriller era triggered within the American youth an equally profound act of identity formation that transcended racial stratification in America's past and created a foundational part of our contemporary identity that moves slightly beyond America's troubled racial history. Using both the voices of his fans and his critics to tease out the work his person and his music did in the early 1980's, I advocate we keep Jackson and his work foregrounded in our study of popular culture in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, as his pop explosion fundamentally and permanently effected how Americans understand ourselves and our relations with each other.

  • Sammy Figueroa Full
Sammy Figueroa has long been regarded as one of the world’s great musicians. As a much-admired percussionist he provided the rhythmical framework for hundreds of hits and countless recordings. Well-known for his versatility and professionalism, he is equally comfortable in a multitude of styles, from R & B to rock to pop to electronic to bebop to Latin to Brazilian to New Age. But Sammy is much more than a mere accompanist: when Sammy plays percussion he tells a story, taking the listener on a journey, and amazing audiences with both his flamboyant technique and his subtle nuance and phrasing. Sammy Figueroa is now considered to be the most likely candidate to inherit the mantles of Mongo Santamaria and Ray Barretto as one of the world’s great congueros. Sammy Figueroa was born in the Bronx, New York, the son of the well-known romantic singer Charlie Figueroa. His first professional experience came at the age of 18, while attending the University of Puerto Rico, with the band of bassist Bobby Valentin. During this time he co-founded the innovative Brazilian/Latin group Raices, which broke ground for many of today’s fusion bands. Raices was signed to a contract with Atlantic Records and Sammy returned to New York, where he was discovered by the great flautist Herbie Mann. Sammy immediately became one of the music world’s hottest players and within a year he had appeared with John McLaughlin, the Brecker Brothers and many of the world’s most famous pop artists. Since then, in a career spanning over thirty years, Sammy has played with a

These labels are designed to print on the NEATO 180955 pre-perforated cd labels & card stock! They include appoximately 1/4 inch extra “bleed” around the perforations, in order to account for small differences in printers and software issues. If you print these labels on PLAIN PAPER, you will need to trim the extra bleed area away or they will not fit. Additionally, you should print these with Adobe Acrobat 7 (older versions may not produce the correct results), and you MUST make sure that the PAGE SCALING option is set to “NONE”. If you have PAGE SCALING set to “Fit To Printer Margins” or “Reduce to Printer Margins”, the graphics will not print at the correct size for the standard jewel case. This is the most common problem people have when they complain about the artwork not fitting the jewel case! MODERN DRUMMER VOL. 4 NO. 4 FEATURES: KEITH KNUDSEN and CHET MCCRACKEN Keith Knudsen and Chet McCracken, drummers for the pop- ular Doobie Brothers, relate how the advantages outweigh the difficulties working in a two drummer situation. The pair also evaluate their own performance styles and preferences within the musical context of the band. 12 JOE COCUZZO Having worked professionally since the age of 19, Joe Co- cuzzo has an abundance of musical knowledge. His respect for and understanding of the drummer's position within the music has prepared him for affiliations with Buddy DeFranco, Gary McFarland, Don Ellis, Woody Herman and Tony Bennett. 20 ED GREENE Ed Greene has the distinction of being one of Los Angeles' hottest studio drummers.
