Athletic and Academic support | welcome to Akron GOLF James P. and Gail (Andrews) McCready believe in the value of athletic competition and the potential it has to positively shape the lives of student-athletes through the valuable lessons it offers. As testimony to this, in 1993 the McCreadys’ established The McCready Family Golf Scholarship to benefit The University of Akron golf program with a pledge of $100,000. In addition to their scholarship, the McCready’s to date have made gifts totaling over $200,000 in support of Zips golfers. But their influence on the golf program does not end there. A master at recognizing potential, Mr. McCready’s busi- ness achievements are numerous. A 1965 graduate from The University of Akron, earning an MBA from UA in 1969, McCready took his talent of tapping potential and rose steadily through the ranks of the Brelin Group. After joining the company in 1976, McCready became its president in 1983. Following the breakup of the company in 1995, he formed the Cypress Companies, comprised of Ausco Products in Michigan, Prior Gaskets in Texas, Riker Products of Ohio and Tredit Tire and Wheel of Indiana. In honor of his corporate achievements, McCready was presented with the prestigious Frank L. Simonetti Distinguished Business Alumni Award in 1987 and is a member of the board of the College of Business Institute for Global Business. The McCreadys are active in the Bridgestone Invitational, the Great Trail Council of the Boy Scouts and the Akron Rotary Club. Gail and Jim McCready are two of the many benefactors to the Akron golf program. Both Jim and Gail are avid golfers. During his undergraduate years, Mr. McCready was a member of the Zips golf team and the same competitive fire he had then controls his golf game to this day. Recognized for Meritorious Service by the Varsity “A” Association, he has been club champion at Portage Country Club eight times, more than any other member in club history. “The game of golf develops character,” McCready said. “If a kid likes to golf, you can leave him at the golf course and know he’s not going to get in trouble. I started hanging around the golf course when I was 12 and that’s where I developed the work ethic I needed later in life. Hanging around a golf course, you see what it takes to be successful.”

Welcome to Akron Golf | 2010-11 schedule The North and West Courses at the world-renowned Firestone Country Club serve as the home courses for The University of Akron men’s golf team. The North Course opened in 1969 and has been rated by Golf Digest as one of Ohio’s top-10 courses. Firestone Country Club, opened for play in 1929, was created by Harvey S. Firestone to serve as a rec- reational park for employees of the Akron-based Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, which he founded. The original links of the South Course were designed by the late Bert Way. Professional golf first visited the Akron area in 1953, when the Rubber City Open was played at Breathnach Country Club in Cuyahoga Falls. The event moved to Firestone in 1954 as a fully-sanctioned tournament and continued through 1959. The PGA Championship was awarded to Akron in 1960, and to provide a worthy test, architect Robert Trent Jones was hired to bring the course, which was then a 6,585-yard -72, up to true championship standards. When Jones was finished adding 50 bunkers and two new ponds, the new card listed 7,189 yards and a par 70. The success of the PGA Championship in Akron led to a new event, the American Golf Classic, which began in 1961 and was played annually through 1976. The PGA Championship returned to the South Course in 1966 and again in 1975, making Firestone the first club to host this championship three times. Since 1962, Firestone’s South Course has been the site for the annual World Series of Golf, a major event on the PGA Tour. For 14 years, the event brought together the winner of the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and the PGA Championship for a two- round, 36-hole television competition. In succeeding years, Firestone played host to many other competi- tions, including the CBS Golf Classic and Big Three Golf. The World Series of Golf was expanded in 1976 and offered the world of profes- sional golf an international champi- onship in which all the participants had won at least one tournament in the past year. In 1984, NEC Corporation became the event’s title sponsor. The PGA’s World Golf Championships NEC Invitational debuted at Firestone Country Club in August 1999, replacing the World Series of Golf. This tournament is part of a World Golf Championship series, and features the game’s foremost players. Tiger Woods has won the event four times since 2001 and has never finished lower than fourth place. The course also played host to the 2002 Senior PGA Championship. In 2001, the West Course was renovated by renowned golf course architect Tom Fazio, making Firestone Country Club the finest 54-hole golf facility in the world.

Welcome to Akron Golf | State-of-the-Art Training facilities The indoor golf facility is one of the finest in the Midwest. In order to assist with each student-athlete’s play on the course, the indoor golf facil- ity features a putting green, bunker and a video motion analysis system. In addition to helping the players perform on the course, the golf facility also features offices for the coaching staff and a study lounge to help classroom performance. The biggest advantage the facility gives the golf team is the ability to train every day of the year. Along with the use of state-of-the-art technol- ogy for performance analysis, UA’s golf team has an advantage over the nation’s top competition. After their first season of indoor training in the winter of 2004-05, the Zips were able to showcase an improved squad in the 2005 Spring season. The indoor facility helped the Zips cut more than 1.5 strokes off their average round and increased their competitive play, including one individual victory, more rounds under par and five of seven golfers improving their strokes-per-round average in the spring from that of their fall 2004 averages. In addition to the indoor golf facility, the UA field house features a full 120-yard AstroPlay field and a 300-meter Mondo track. Additional components of the building include spectator seating for approximately 1,200, a new sports medicine center, varsity locker rooms and athletics equipment storage areas. Also in 2006 additional offices were added to the facility, housing the coaching staffs for UA’s football, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer and track and field teams. To help the team prepare for a long season on the course, the field house features a strength and conditioning center with over 8,000-square-feet of space, which includes both strength training and rehabilitation equipment. This addition to UA athletics enables the men’s golf team and the rest of the 18 intercollegiate teams to have an advantage when it comes to recruiting the top student-athlete’s in the nation. All 18 of UA’s intercollegiate athletics teams have access to the area, both in season, and for off-season conditioning work- outs.
